I was happy to forward this article to a friend of mine who recently thought I was crazy to tell him of Giant Squid. He didn't believe that they had even existed, let alone been found.
"Not alive" I told him.
We'll have one of these f'ers on video soon!
Rare Giant Squid Caught Off Canary Islands (http://www.nbc30.com/news/3651163/detail.html)
http://images.ibsys.com/2004/0813/3651150_320X240.jpg
The squid measures nearly 30 feet long and weighs 222 pounds. It was found tangled in the fishermen's nets. It had already died.
There have only been 300 confirmed sightings of giant squids over the past 500 years. None have ever been seen alive.

i live for this shit. the reports from credible sources go up to 150+ feet. They find pieces of these collosal squid in or around sperm whales.
it seems the Sperm Whale vs. Giant Squid match is like the ultimate sea battle. There are stories of people watching these battles, can you imagine seeing that? Id never go near an ocean again.
fuckers have beaks and hooks on the ends of suckers and suckers that leave circular wounds in whales that show up in whale photos; and eyes that can be the size of a fucking basketball.
we dont know shit about the ocean. the fishermen, the long liners, the netters, they know. they've been pulling up creatures no one has a clue about since we had nets, still finding weird shit down there.

you alwasy hear people say "we know more about space then our own oceans" While I tend not to agree with this, it is very interesting to think there is still a lot to be learned in our own backyard (relative to space). Anyway the Giant Squid are def. top shelf predators, meaning there are probably very few of them in the oceans. it would be great to see one of them hunt and kill something, especially if it were the sze of a whale.

I would say that we know more about our solar system than we do about our oceans. Hell, we know more about Mars than we do the deepest part of the oceans.
Here some of what we do know:
Ocean Facts (http://www.oceansonline.com/oceanfacts2.htm)
less than 10% of this living space has been explored by humans
Mount Everest (the highest point on the Earth's surface 5.49 miles) is more than 1 mile shorter that the Challenger Deep (the deepest point in the ocean at 6.86 miles)
water pressure at the deepest point in the ocean is more than 8 tons per square inch, the equivalent of one person trying to hold 50 jumbo jets.

The Space - Ocean fight is never ending and here is why. If we do not know about it, how can we give a percentage of how much we know?
i would say we know more about the Ocean though. we may not know every species there is, but we do know a lot. If you think about space, we have not even seen the edge! the ocean is in a defined area. We know the depth, temp, pressure.
Space we know basically nothing. there are billions of stars with innumrable planets. The % of space we can look at is miniscule compared to the reasearch we can and have been doing on the ocean. think of it like this. You may not know everything that is yuor neigbors house, but you have an idea. Maybe you see him throw out a washer machine, so you can assume he bought a new one. Then, think of what a person in China in a remote province you never heard of has. You basically have no idea. maybe a fuzzy satellite photo of the general area. thats it.
That is one way to look at the diffrence between the ocean and outer space. Outer space is way to fast to ever get a grip on. Plus, there is shit out there we do not even have the math yet to comprehend. we still do not know about black holes, dark matter, anti-gravity /matter. physics is still playing catch up with all this, not to mention string theory and multi dimmensions

GIANT squid are taking over the world, well at least the oceans, and they are getting bigger.
According to scientists, squid have overtaken humans in terms of total bio-mass.
That means they take up more space on the planet than us.

<p>It hovered in the ink dark water, waiting.<br />It was not a fish, had no air bladder to give it buoyancy, but because of the special chemistry of its flesh, it did not sink into the abyss.<br />It was not a mammal, did not breathe air, so it felt no impulse to move to the surface.<br />It hovered.<br />It was not asleep, for it did not know sleep, sleep was not among its natural rhythms. It rested, nourishing itself with oxygen absorbed from the water pumped through the caverns of its bullet-shaped body.<br />Its eight sinuous arms floated on the currents; its two long tentacles were coiled tight against its body. When it was threatened or in the frenzy of a kill, the tentacles would spring forward, like tooth-studded whips...<br />It existed to survive. And to kill.<br />For, peculiarly, if not uniquely, in the world of living things, it often killed without need, as if Nature, in a fit of perverse malevolence, had programmed it to that end.</p><p>-Peter Benchley</p>

Video of the "monster" Ron was talking about yesterday.
Called Magnapinna, these relatives of the squid have only been spotted a handful of times by vehicles like the one that recorded it here. Four of their bodies have been recovered by researchers, but were so badly damaged that it was hard for scientists to figure out their anatomy. What we do know is that they can grow to about 23 feet in length, about half the size of the biggest giant squid, and they have 10 long legs (instead of the normal squid setup of 8 short legs and 2 big tentacles).
Nobody is sure why their legs have that elbow-like crook in them, but researchers speculate that it could be to keep the legs from tangling as the creature drifts along catching prey in its long, long tentacles. Apparently these creatures are quite common in the dark depths of the ocean below 4,000 feet, and there are perhaps four subspecies.

OK, so this isn't a Giant Squid story but they're jumbo and I didn't want to start another thread.
They're invading San Diego right now.
http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D99FNF0O0&show_article=1
SAN DIEGO (AP) - Thousands of jumbo flying squid—aggressive 5-foot-long sea monsters with razor-sharp beaks and toothy tentacles—have invaded the shallow waters off San Diego, spooking scuba divers and washing up dead on tourist-packed beaches.
The carnivorous calamari, which can grow up to 100 pounds, came up from the depths last week and swarms of them roughed up unsuspecting divers. Some divers report tentacles enveloping their masks and yanking at their cameras and gear.
Stories of too-close encounters with the alien-like cephalopods have chased many veteran divers out of the water and created a whirlwind of excitement among the rest, who are torn between their personal safety and the once-in-a-lifetime chance to swim with the deep-sea giants.

From the article:
A large squid surprised Magill by hitting her from behind and grabbing at her with its arms, pulling her sideways in the water. The powerful creature ripped her buoyancy hose away from her chest and knocked away her light.
When Magill recovered, she didn't know which direction was up and at first couldn't find the hose to help her rise to the surface. The squid was gone.
"I just kicked like crazy. The first thing you think of is, 'Oh my gosh, I don't know if I'm going to survive this. If that squid wanted to hurt me, it would have," she said.
Yikes!
I had read something the other day that this swarm of squid started right after an earthquake off the coast on San Diego.
So, obviously, these squid are the first attack wave from the creatures that live in our hollow Earth. Next will be fighting iridescent vultures and venomous badgers.
We're doomed.

i dont think thats a giant. it has to be a humboldt. the giants have 2 extra long tentacles that it uses, which are not seen when it pulls away. besides, that squid is tiny compared to the rov, especially its arm.
regardless, you can tell by its siphon that it was trying like hell to run away with the rov.

RARE PHOTOS: Giant Squid Eaten by Sperm Whale (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/10/photogalleries/giant-squid-sperm-whale-pictures/index.html)
October 29, 2009--Carrying the remains of a roughly 30-foot (9-meter) giant squid in her jaws, a female sperm whale, with a calf at her side, swims near the surface off Japan's Bonin Islands (map)in the northwestern Pacific. Taken on October 15, this and other "absolutely sensational" new pictures offer rare proof of the sperm whale's taste for giant squid, said giant squid expert Steve O'Shea of the Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand.
The pictures may also reveal that adult sperm whales, which grow up to 59 feet (18 meters) long, use pieces of their prizes to teach youngsters how to catch their own, O'Shea told National Geographic News.
The group of five adults and one calf kept diving deep in unison, photographer Tony Wu told the Daily Mail. "It seemed as if the adult whales were trying to teach the baby to dive and also to eat squid," he said.

I say we etch a portrait of Muhammad on the ocean floor and tell the Muslims the whales did it.

13-foot-long giant squid washes up on New Zealand beach
A dead four-meter-long giant squid washed up on a beach today in Wellington, New Zealand. The creature eventually drifted back out to sea, but not before locals had the opportunity to snap photos of the beached beast.
From Sarah Harvey at the Sunday Star Times:
[Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa] communications manager Jane Kieg said the creature was in bad shape as it had been attacked and had suffered further damage from being washed up on the beach.
Department of Conservation Wellington area manager Rob Stone initially identified the squid as a colossal squid - the largest type.
But Ms Kieg said it was a giant squid. She said colossal squid have short tentacles with swivel hooks and massive fins. But the Wellington beast has long tentacles with teethed suckers and small fins.
The dead squid was found on a marine reserve, and its body returned to the sea. Researchers did remove the squid's beak to determine its age.

I'm reading this book right now, and it's fucking awesome:
http://aidanmoher.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/kraken-by-china-mieville-US.jpg
It starts out with the corpse of a giant squid being stolen out of a natural history museum -- and then all hell breaks loose. It's a really cool update of some of Lovecraft's themes, but with a nice dark sense of humor.
And, besides, as much as I love ol' Howard Phillip's stories, Lovecraft wasnt' really that good a writer.

DEADLY sea monsters have woken from the deep to cause carnage among some of the world’s richest fishing grounds. (http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/196228/Man-eating-giant-squid-devouring-fish-stocks)
Millions of killer giant squid are not only devouring vast amounts of fish they have even started attacking humans.
Two Mexican fishermen were recently dragged from their boats and chewed so badly that their bodies could not be identified even by their own families.
No wonder the giant squid are called “diablos rojos” – red devils.

Fishermen bag 23-foot-long giant squid off of Florida (http://io9.com/5816266/fishermen-bag-23+foot+long-giant-squid-off-of-florida)
Last Sunday, fisherman 12 miles off the coast of Stuart, Flordia found themselves with a mollusk of a tale to tell some folks — they had hooked a specimen of Architeuthis Dux , or the Atlantic Giant Squid.
Explains TC Palm of this tentacled catch:
At about 11:30 a.m., [fisherman Joe] Asaro spotted a large mass in the water, and when the three anglers motored in to investigate they discovered a 23-foot-long, 200-pound giant squid floating dead but extremely well-preserved [...] The squid measured 11 feet from the top of its head to the bottom of its arms and 23 feet from its head to the end of its two feeding tentacles [...]
Sadly, the fishermen did not consume the squid to absorb its briny cephalopod wisdom — they passed it on to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute and the University of Florida. Unlike more recent squid sightings, this one did not possess the power of flight.
I'm currently reading this: Kraken: The Curious, Exciting, and Slightly Disturbing Science of Squid (http://www.amazon.com/Kraken-Curious-Exciting-Slightly-Disturbing/dp/0810984652/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1309285037&sr=8-1)
It's very rare to find such an intact specimen.
