I think drugs should be legal, but I don't buy the idea that it was meant to reel in minorities or other illicit purposes.

Money was a factor + hysteria on unknown + illegal immigration from mexico was a factor such that southern states started banning it, then Texas was first I believe, then the Marijuana Tax Act of 1917, cant remember its in another thread; effectively ended the legal use of pot in america.

As to the corporate angle for Marijuana; there's a problem in that it's different from prescription drugs in that it's a plant, and theres one quote I remember from the book reefer madness where you had a Fed saying effectively; 'You Cant Tax a Weed'.

And while they can try; that might just open a whole New underground in Tax Free Pot; just like with Cigs.

As a start, decriminalize it; get rid of the stupid state by state irregularities and mandatory minimums; for fuck sake let cancer, chemo and HIV and anyone who is really ill use the stuff without fear of arrest, and there's more but i'm really hungry... and... is that Chocolate?...

What I meant was that all across america; people with little homegrown farms and hydroponics can grow pounds of weed that will leave a person buzzing nicely for hours. There's hydroponic chemicals, but a whole industry in 100% organic grown weed; the most exotic shit; literally, guano, kelp, worm casings. Hell each month High Times has a photo gallery of people who send in pictures of these emormous plants and buds they're growing.

I say you can't underestimate William Randolph Hearst. Christ, the guy basically started a war himself just to sell newspapers...the tale goes the mountains of money he was making off of his "pulp" paper mills would have been slashed since it's cheaper to make paper out of hemp, so he made a big push to have it made illegal. It's not as if he was the sole voice at the time clamoring for the criminalization of hemp/pot (Like Mike says, the stereotypes/stigmas of immigration helped a lot), but I think he was definitely one of, if not THE, strongest factors.
