Who's been to Japan?

My little sister and I want to go when she graduates high school in 2 years. I've always wanted to go and I think it will be great but I know nothing about the culture and have only traveled abroad in Europe. She's taking Japanese in school starting this year so at least she'll know the language somewhat.

I'd like to know what your experience's were if you've been and if you think it would be safe for two girls (18 and 20 something) to travel on our own.

I've never been but a roomate of mine in college studied there for a summer and absolutly loved it. I'm sure it's safe for you girls travel, as long as you stay away from the Crazy 88 like East Side Dave said.

If I'm lucky I might end up stationed there. Iwakuni, Japan specifically. It's somewhere near Hiroshima I believe.

Anyway, I've heard Roppongi is cool as hell. It's supposed to be like this Japanese version of Las Vegas with like 20 story clubs and stuff like that.

I prefered pretty much anywhere else in Asia better, but Japan outside of Tokyo is nice. The countryside is very serene and spectacular.

I was in Hokkaido, Japan when I was in the service...we had to refuel and resupply there...that the Northern island...snowed the whole time but the people were great for the 5 days I was there!!!!
