who invented spacey improv? who took it to new levels FIRST! the only reason phish plays thos diff styles , is because they saw the dead doing it, they completly rip off the deads sound.
Yes the dead were the first to perform spacey improv... that means Phish is biting off them? So was Led Zeppelin biting off the Stones when they started playing Rock n Roll? Of coarse not... why? because Phish was simply playing in the same music genre, that does not make them a copy-cat
As for Phish playing Dead stlyes you could not be so wrong... sure there is Dead influence, but the style at heart were compltely different
here is why:
The classic DEAD improv consisted of a single rythm, where everything is balanced. Dead improvs were very melow, never allowing one instrument to dominate over the rest of the band. When you listen you hear 4-5 equal parts coming at you at once. Dead improvs stayed at the same pace through out the jam with little or no variations until the jam was complete (example: Fire on the Mountain)
the classic PHISH improv was much more dynamic consisting of up and downs, building up tense moments with powerful releases. At any moment during a jam a certain part (guitar, bass, etc) could burst out and take control of the direction of the jam. (example: Run Like an Antelope)
The dead also stayed within one style in there music, the distinctive "Dead" style (which they created, which I have already given them credit for)
Phish tapped into every different type of style, and were able to jam every style as well... this made there music much more diverse, which is much more than I can say about the Dead.

this is just simply NOT TRUE. Trey is his own musician, whose style is VERY, VERY different than Jerry's and to say otherwise is insulting.

Phish has just taken time off after 17 years, an amazing run for any band. Besides, it not how long you stay together that counts, its the quality of music that was produced. I can list you plenty of bands that did not last over 10 years and were amazing in there own right.

While I will give all the credit in the world to the DEAD for many things, I personally feel PHISH had a better sound, better style, and better improv technique.
