These are the people we want to open our borders to??? I do not think so. I think they should also find the captain and put his ass in jail. (http://cnn.aimtoday.cnn.com/news/story.jsp?flok=FF-APO-1102&idq=/ff/story/0001%2F20040811%2F1852976993.htm&sc=1102)

Did you ever see the movie "Alive"? People facing death have a different set of priorities.
This story just shows me how important it is to figure out a way to deal with immigration because the sad part is that even though many will read it and see the how dangerous it is, I know that there will be a dozen more boats leaving within a week.

yes I saw Alive. But that was a different set of circumstances. These migrants did not crash land on the side of a mountain on accident. They set off to the carribean and took their chances. I could understand if the woman was dead but if she is still alive and just did not want her body violated by these people, and they still threw her overboard anyway? That is murder, plain and simple. And there are qualifications for people who want to come to this country, maybe there is a reason we cannot take them all at the same time. I know conditions are deplorable. But if we just left an open door policy do you know the chaos that would insue on the borders from Florida to Texas and California?
There has to be SOME form of order.

I'm not advocating an open door policy.
Stranded in the ocean, amongst sharks, in the baking sun, facing inevitable death, you have no idea what you're capable of.
There are lots of prerequisites for getting into this country, but basically, money and connections speed up the process.
I actually think that the best way for the US to deal with immigration is to participate effectively in the international community so that the citizens of 3rd world countries don't have to come here to make a life. These places suck and there aren't many opportunities for these people, if they could have a basic standard of living that would feed, shelter, and clothe them, most of them would be fine where they are. With their families and in the country they love.
Participation in the world economy and enforcing standards of living would probably cost us in the US money as far as paying more for items we get on the cheap because we can now. However, for those that want immigration curbed, it may be the most effective way to deal with it.

A few NJ boys have gone down to surf Rincon, in Puerto Rico. Some of the best waves in the world, and close.
The empty boats are seen almost every morning; the people coming from DR or Haiti or God knows what island in that archipelago; things get bad enough in places, people are willing to take the chance. This to me is more of a USS Indianapolis situation; the Survivor-types live, the weak die, some panic and just go under, the starvation, sun, and dehydration = hallucinations and panic, and some kill others in these states; it is outside of my Experience, so I have no idea what I would do or how I would behave.
My friend Edner, works at the Big and Tall shop here; a Minister from Haiti, wife's is the best RN I know; and we talk for hours, and the conditions, well, you sorta get numbed out hearing of the atrocities. He's so minister he wont let me tip him; I finally got him to accept a check made out to his church. Ok tangent alert, sorry. But he Knows, and hearing him speak of this; what these people go through, trying to escape, it's just so fucking bad.
It's an issue with so many variables, political, geographic, and the cost is lives. It sucks.

this sounds more like the UN's job, Not the US's. Isn't this the whole point of the UN? The US is responsible for the welfare of US citizens. anything else is done out of kindness, and we do more for other nations than any other single nation.
But it is the UN's job to help raise the standard of living in third world nations.

I agree with that completely, but it's to our benefit to participate in that.

yes, but it'd be easier if the UN did it's job. otherwise the US is paying twice, since we're paying the lion's share of the UN budget already.

i'd hate to think what some of your ancestors might've done if their boat to ellis island had the same problem.
i'd also hate to think what kinda shit the early americans would've written regarding closing the borders to the likes of the rest of the world.

I think we should judge all immigrants by the actions of people lost at sea with no food or water for two weeks and surrounded by 40 dead people. We must nuke the borders OR AMERICA WILL BE DESTROYED!!!!1!

Can't these people go through normal immigration standards? Or are they somehow different and have to come on these rafts and risk their lives?
Honest question from a kid who's not to sure about the subject.
Oh, but I think the borders need to be patrolled a lot better.

Really, though, why is this OUR responsibility?
Too even have any kind of success in doing that these countries really need to have the appropriate infrastructure to accomodate a free/mixed market as-well-as a capitalist culture. It would take GENERATIONS to turn the MAJORITY of poor countries around, and that's far, far too much time and money to invest, even if the ROI is worth it.
Of course, though, the U.S. is a wonderful catch-22. If the US gets involved in "building" up these nations, we're imperialist tyrants trying to push our might onto the world. If if we don't we're selfish isolationists that don't care about humanity.
Frankly, fuck it all.
I'm waiting for LiquidCourage to come of the proper constitutional age, so that I can vote for him and his "More sharks on the borders" campaign.

You're right - sometimes my own patriotism blinds me, and I forget that we really suck as a nation, because we can't light up a joint whenever we damn well feel like it like they can in Amsterdam.

She didn't say it was our responsibility, she was clearly speaking in pragmatic terms, just like you tried to do.

It would take GENERATIONS to turn the MAJORITY of poor countries around, and that's far, far too much time and money to invest, even if the ROI is worth it.
But if the return-on-investment is worth it, then how is it not worth it?
Of course, though, the U.S. is a wonderful catch-22. If the US gets involved in "building" up these nations, we're imperialist tyrants trying to push our might onto the world. If if we don't we're selfish isolationists that don't care about humanity.
Only when we do it at gunpoint and when a majority of only two countries' populations support the idea, and when we clearly have no plan to secure the peace, and are clearly distorting the evidence to support our changing rationalles for doing it in the first place...
Seriously, aren't we going to get enough of this self-richeous pandering at the convention this week?
