View Full Version : Rap version of played out or sell out

It seems more along the lines of sell out for a lot of the rappers, than played out in my opinion.

The way things have gone, it looks like rappers are only using rap music as a stepping stone to the big payback.

Examples:

Will Smith: Ok a mediocre rapper originally, but still, he is more known as an actor now than a rapper. Poor DJ Jazzy Jeff.

Ice-T: Pimp. The OG. Now plays (badly) a cop on tv.

Ice Cube: Making bad movies

Queen Latifah: One of the original angry women rappers. Now is a Make-up company spokeswoman.

Method Man/Redman: Have a hack show on tv now and are just shuckin' and jivin' it up for the camera.

Snoop Dogg: Known for doing anything you will give him a paycheck for.

Mos Def: I'm gonna give Mos Def a pass because Def Poetry is great.

Xzibit: Pimp my ride, commercials.

DMX: Making REALLY bad movies.

I'm sure there's more examples.

It just seems like they all got into rap for the right intentions, and then an agent said that they could make MORE money if they did whatever other gig, and they just said yes for the paycheck.

Granted, in some cases, it shows other talents for the rappers. I'm not against making a buck, but is this a case of when keepin' it real goes wrong?

Are aspiring young rappers now only looking to make a name for themselves in the hip hop community so it'll bring something other than rap for their future for a bigger bank account?

How long will it be before 50 Cent is telling me about how white my shirts can be?

Most of them are trying to get out of the situation they are presently in at the moment. Out of the ghetto, out of their town, whatever. But after they get big, they see that they can do all this other stuff and get paid even more money (speculation on my part but...yeah). Also the rappers you mentioned have also been around for quite awhile except for Exhibit and DMX. And after awhile maybe they get rappers block or can't pump out that quality music everyone used to love.

You also forgot to mention Eminem with 8 mile and his clothing line.

And how about Puff Daddy, he's fucking swimming in jello that man:

Albums
Upcoming Artists
His own clothing line

He's a goddamned triple threat.

Ice Cube: Making bad movies

Not sure whether you know or not, but Cube is still rappin' wit Westside Connection(him, Mack 10, and WC). So I dont know about him being a sellout cause hes always done movies and hes still rappin and keepin the west coast alive.

And as corny as Red and Meths show is, I cant stop watchin and theyre two of my favorite rappers.

But back to the whole sellout thing, I dont exactly know what any of these rappers are selling out from. Theyre all more just rappers turned actors/spokespeople for whatever product.

i remember way back when, the early 90's, when people got dissed for going pop. then rappers figured out that whitey was buying more albums than the black folks.

the script got flipped, and then all of a sudden everything turned into flossin. blame puffy. honestly, why would you buy an album strictly about shit you don't have or can offord?

then it started to represent street. not that it didn;t before, but people who couldn't represent before had to rep a authentic jersey, sean paul pants, big chains, etc...

Rap sucks. It was good when Public Enemy was telling people to Fight the Power.

But it's all about money, they literally rap about money. And they don't sample music like they used to, they just rip whole portions of existing music, sometimes whole songs.

Damn these rappers for trying make money in this capitalize country called the United States of America. A country that is all about the money. Why is that when a rapper or any other musican does something other than music and get money from it people say " ohhh you're a sell out , oh you're a whore". However no one ever has a problem with with say Lebron James endorsing sneakers and soda and whole bunch of other stuff. This is the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA get the FUCKING MONEY!!!!!

i think with rock 'legends' doing commercials, amusement park rides and broadway plays ... the term 'selling out' has very little meaning these days ...

in today's market, the paradigm has changed so much that 'artists' use these commercial outlets to either get their music, some face time or just to get paid ...

rap clearly has its own definition of selling out ... even more credible artists have deals with sneaker companies and beverages ... in one aspect, they seem to have replaced athletes as the darlings of madison avenue ...

i admit this reference is a bit dated, but 'sell out' acts tend to be of the ilk of hammer and vanilla ice ...

but there aren't too many of those types anymore ... any new artist tend to be a proteges of an existing artist: 50 cent to eminem to dr. dre ... or is stamped with a label or producer from a niche market: puffy, master p or dr. dre ...

rap artists that have hands in so may ventures probably have advisors that explained the very short shelf life for pop stars ... acting and endorsing are merely vehicles to keep aging stars paid ...

Hate to burst your bubble here but most rap artists get into "the game" for the money. Rap and sports are easy outs for talented black americans looking to make big money. If they can parlay that into a successful career doing other things, whose to blame them? I'd sell out in a second. Selling out is good. It means money in your pocket. There's no reason black people shouldn't get a slice of the big selling out pie that white people have been dining on for years. I'm sure they feel just awul for selling out while driving thier 200,000 dollar cars into the garage of thier 10 million dollar homes.

Oh, and Ice Cube was in Friday, Three Kings and Barbershop. I enjoyed all three.

1/2 of them do not even have the money they are spending. they all go broke eventually. Only the really popular ones make enough to keep the lifestyle going.

Look at the cash money millionares. how the hell did they make enough money to afford all that shit?? I bet the are starting to realize its been a few years with no real income and they better pick a new lifestyle or be back to where they came from.

BTW, how much does an artist make per CD Sold? and where else do they get income from? Do they get paid for the songs on the radio?

Most musicians get tiny amounts of money from actual CD sales. Their REAL money comes from signing bonuses, and the sums the record company pays them to keep them signed or just happy. But they never pay them anything close to what they earn. Like, if a band blows up, sells 80 million dollars worth of albums, the label will probably "reward" the artists with maybe a couple million, if they're lucky. Or they'll buy the artists a new car, a new home, yadda-yadda-yadda. Musicians make the BIG bucks once they "sell out" from tours. Ticket sales and merch sales are where established groups REALLY rake in the huge dollars. Bands, as they get bigger and more experienced, usually re-do their deals so they cut a bigger cut of the royalties, but for the first 5-10 years, they're not getting much.

And most of the "nu-money" rappers AND rockers on "Cribs" actually rent most of their flashy shit. Just keep that in mind...

i don't think rap played or sell out is a controversy.
just from the attitude that rappers have it seems to be the make the most money possible, and keep them hits coming.

all other music, people that like it, want it to be their own, keep it in their pockets, and don't want to share it with anyone. as soon as the artist that they "found" is followed by the masses they are sold out. (at least that's the way i percieve it)

your telling me that a song from a group never hit you, touched you, made you remember that past, that wasn't from your particular choice of music?

is the realization that rock n' roll is noise and meaningless bullshit to someone else not hitting you?

a good song is a good song, no matter the genre.
and not only that it's all subjective, i can quote rock lyrics that could be thought of as rap, and rap lyrics that you would think of rock songs.

i stand by my statement

no music is meaningless, it has meaning to someone.

rappers who rap now about bling, drugs and hoes,
are the same as hair metal bands who sang about fame, drugs, and sluts.
or blues artists who sang about getting money, drugs/alcohol, and wifes who cheat.

it's all about style, and whether YOU (as the listener) like it.

Compared to the nu-metal "sludge" and faux-garage minimalism that most rock groups dump on us these days, quality DJ's are like the Hendrix of today. One listen to any of the albums in the "Return of The DJ" or "Deep Concentration" series proves that.

Scroll down this page to the Real Audio section, and check out some of the MP3's from the "dj/scratching/turntablism" area. (http://www.bombhiphop.com/newbomb/bombpages/listen.html)

Not liking hip-hop is one thing, and makes sense. Not everyone is going to like everything. But to say guys like the DJ's I'm bringing up aren't musicians is, in my opinion, kinda retarded. If it's because they're "stealing" the music, come ON. Rock 'n' roll's lifeblood has been thievery and plagarism...you take something old and make it new again. It's universal.

I highly reccomend anyone interested check out the DVD below...

But for anyone to say , someone who performs at a live Venue w/ tracks Crankin` behind them is a Musician should lay off the grains for awhile. Dude, I'm saying the DJ IS a musician. Yes, you get whack rappers who just play pre-recorded music, but the good acts have a DJ or two or three back there making all-new music right there, on the spot. With the good groups, you get MORE variety than most other genres, because the DJ's and the MC's will often completely modify or "mutate" the track you heard on the record into something completely different right there live.

And, there are plenty of hip-hop acts that play with live bands. Full bands, bands that are often bigger than typical "rock" bands.

And the dancing...dance music in the last 30 years mostly comes from either techno, hip-hop or disco, and people who typically hate one of those genres usually say they hate the others...so what does that leave for dance music?!? Shake yo' ass, nj!

Ain't no wiggers here. Wiggers like shitty rap. I'm talking hip-hop.

That was Kinison's dumbest bit. Especially when you saw the music he made/listened to.

mojo is making the point i wish i had the verbalization to make.
just because a rapper makes words over a pre-recorded beat, doesn't mean that a musician didn't make that beat.
and i ain't talking about "Puffy" bullshit. "take shit from the eighties, make it sound so crazy". SHIT HE ADMITS IT!!!!
i'm talking about Dr. Dre, all his beats are original, and written by him. his words are mostly written by him with help from his production team.

so when he plays with a beat that is completely written by him, but pre recorded does that make him less talented?

i don't think so.
