View Full Version : Paper for resume

I'm aruging with someone about paper for a resume.

I'm saying that employers are perfectly happy with clean, white paper, as long as the resume on it is nice and concise.

The person I'm aruging with wants to use a 24 lbs ivory linen paper.

Since the resume in question is going to be both emailed and snail-mailed, who is right?

BTW, the one line I have running in my head looking at this paper is...

"It's called 'bone'"....

depends on the guy who is doing the reading and the hiring... some people like something a little different and some nice, heavier, and different colored paper may make them look a little harder and show more of an interest in yours which is being compared to many others...

obviously if they are looking only electronically then it doesn't matter what paper you use... then you can throw in a good font here and there, and bold in the right places

some of it depends on where and what job you are applying for... let's say it's in a Graphics department, then doing some 'different' things may help a bunch. but if it's for a mechanics position, then go with the standard stuff...

It's an Editorial position

(*disclaimer, it's NOT for me)

I'm going to look the other way on the paper-issue.

i always go for the good stuff. it's expensive, but if getting a good job is important, i figure it's worth it. there are so many qualified people applying for the same jobs that i try to make myself stand out, or at least not to stand out as the one cheapskate who wouldn't spring for the ivory 24 lb.

It shouldn't matter if it's going both e-mail and hardcopy. Plain paper should be fine. It's the integrity of what's on the paper that counts.

OK, basic grammar time...

Is it...

"This letter and resume are in reference ..."

OR

"This letter and resume IS in reference..."

Remember, it's an editorial position.

I re-iterate, "THIS JOB IS NOT FOR ME", I am just assisting on the cover letter.

"Are" sounds awkward.

correct: "This letter and resume IS in reference..."

or you could just write .... "please accept the enclosed resume in reference to"

Final solution: The attached resume is in reference too... (since they are already reading the cover letter)

i would agree. 'is' is referring to 'this', and both are singular.

I own a small company and get swamped with resumes. I am trying to think, but I can't remember a time when the "type" of paper led me to make a decision. I will say that misspelling, poor grammar and incomplete info always cause the resume to go right from my desk into the trash.

Final solution:
You're going to kill all prospective employers?

Actually, it should be "This letter and resume ARE in reference" since you are listing more than one item.

Think of it this way, if you were to use a pronoun in reference to the letter and resume, you would choose "they" and not "it." "Are" is the correct verb.

I'm a paid professional. Don't try this at home.

Depends on the quality of the resume itself. The paper may look professional, but your resume can still suck.
