Not that Greece is ready to host them yet, but the opening ceremony is this Firday on NBC. Anyone gonna be watching it or any of the events? I just watch the basketball, baseball, and sometimes track. So what events do you/are going to watch?

While the opening ceremonies are Friday, the first competition is Wednesday - check out MSNBC.

Up until about 6 months ago I was actually planning on going there. A friend of mine (who used to work with our favorite book story manager) is over there now, working for the US embassy for the next 2 years, and invited me over with a place to stay, and tickets and all that. I really wanted to be there. Maybe I'm in denial about the threat, but growing up in the DC area, especially during the 80s, you get kind of use to the idea of a a target on your back (not target'). If my employment situation had been straightened out sooner, I would have been there for the opening ceremonies, which I've always wanted to go to.

Anyway, I'll be watching as much as possible on tv - I love the Olympics.

Athens is a filthy place. I was there several years ago and that, more than the history of the city, was what I took home with me. There are packs of wild dogs that roam the city at will, even in the airports! Everybody who lives there has a cell phone in one hand and a cigarette in another and none of the cars have mufflers.

There was a comedian a few years ago that did a bit about guys who come in last at the Olympics. You spend your whole life focusing on the Olympics. Training all day everyday, no partying, no boozing, no smoking a little weed, no big mac's, nothing. FOR YEARS. And then you come in last. Am I being un-Patriotic for saying I want to see the USA Basketball team lose and go down in flames? I was cool with the Dream Team idea back when it started cause hey, every other country in the world was using their pros. But it has gotten a bit dialated in the recent years and this years team is a bit much. It is like I am rooting for Reebok and Nike as opposed to the USA. The rest of the World has caught up to our basketball play and in the long run it will be better for the game. But for now, I just do NOT like this team and that celebration after they beat a NON-Qualifying Germany last weekend was abit much. Have some fucking dignity why don't you?

Am I being un-Patriotic for saying I want to see the USA Basketball team lose and go down in flames?


I thought the dream team was a good idea too....until all the good players decided to not participate....I mean I understand they dont want to play what is basically another season, what with all the injuries that can be sustained and they want their rest and everything. But at the same time, how about doing something not for yourself but for your country, which has given you an opportunity to earn the millions of dollars that you have? Notice how the non-American NBA players have no problem playing for their country? How about showing loyalty not to the almighty dollar but to your country?

I'll be watching any event that's on. I'll probably watch alot of the swimming and diving. I'd like to see some of the canoeing, kayaking and archery as well.

I don't know how much soccer and baseball I'll be watching since the US men's teams didn't qualify for either event. I'll watch the women's soccer though.

Former Flyer Bill Clement will be a commentator for the badminton competition since he was a champion badminton player back in the day.

Rulan is a fucking ANIMAL. He lost a toe to frostbite in February 2002, was tossed off his motorcycle in March 2004, and dislocated his wrist playing a pickup basketball game in April 2004.

I am thinking possible gold again for him.

Also I really want to see CAEL SANDERSON. Kid was just a stud in college. No loses. that is just sick. It will be cool to see him against the best in the world.

A friend of mine from highschool took a redshirt this past year to train for the olympics. He started school in St. Benedicts in Newark before transferring to Blair. He only lost 1 match in highschool his freshmen year, and he really should have won. he was a heavy weight and may be one of the quickest kids I have ever seen. Its almost unnatural for some one who is over 220 pounds to be able to to a front a back flip with ease. He was an amazing athelete. I lost touch with him when he went away to college in Iowa.

He recently transferred schools and is ranked 3rd on the US Team going into the olympics. I hope to see him on TV, if not I know he will go gold on 2008! either way, i wish him well as well as the US Team

Mojo beat me to it. The last time I watched or went to an NBA game was the year larry bird retired and Shaq was a rookie. After that, I basically lost interest.

I think basketball is marketed towards black kids more than white kids. I never played BBALL, i was a wrestler, but I used to watch. Now I do not even bother. They are athletic and can jump and dunk, but you hardly ever see good shooting anymore. At least in the few games I watch.

The problem with USA basketball is that we keep sending teams over there to sell jerseys and not actually play basketball. The days where we could just send all star teams that killed everybody are over. This team is not configured to win under international rules, even if they had Shaq and KG, International rules and zone D's take out the big men. We have an entire team of dopes who do nothing but drive to the hole and try to dunk the ball.

The guys they should have on this team like Michael Redd(best 3 point shooter in the game) and Tayshaun Prince(one of the best defensive stoppers in the game), aren't here.

I think Paul could have handled things better as far as comments to the press. However, the video also showed that the athlete on whose behalf Korea filed the complaint was not charged a mandatory deduction for exceeding the number of holds (3) allowed on the parallel bars. Consequently, the score would not have changed (other than to have actually gone lower for the Korean athlete).

What I have big problems with is the inconsistancy of the judging overall last night. They had at least 3 athletes with a 9.762 which is just nuts. With as much variance as the judges are allowed to have and by allowing them to go out to 1 thousandth of a point, there should rarely be a tie, let alone a three way tie. Additionally, there was at least one other tie for another position.

Expect an overhaul in the way judging is done and the criteria used for the selection of judges before the next World event.

As screwed up as this has been, you'd think it was figure skating (or a political election).

Jeff is correct. Hamm should not have give back the medal. Do baseball players gave back the world series title if an Ump made a bad call.

Anyway it was his people's fault. they had the chane to file a formal complaint within a certain time limit and the failed to do so.

And Jeff is also correct in saying that he should have had a mandatory deduction and did not get.

Here is the problem with the Olympics from a spectator standpoint. In reality, we watch these events every 4 years. who the hell are we, or the fans in the stadium, to know what is fair or unfair. what we see on TV may look hard to us, but may actually be an easy degree of diffuculty. the subtle nuances are what change the scores. stuff we maybe can not percieve since we are not trained to do so.
