View Full Version : Funny is all about perception
blakjeezis

LIke it depends on the person doing it. Someone that the audience didn't deem to be funny, or funny in a certain way, won't get a laugh. For example (I'm not just picking on East Side Dave, who happens to be a fine, upstanding member of society. Although, he is one of the 'Descendants of Atlantis'):
During the first softball game of last year (Amityville, NY), an ice cream truck drove by the field. East Side ran madly across the outfield yelling " ICE CREAM, ICE CREAM." Everybody laughed at Dave and his funny-ass bit, myself included. It was funny. Now, if I, blakjeezis, had run across the field in the same manner, no one would have laughed. They would have called me an idiot and thrown me off the field.
There was another example, but I forgot it. That being said, this example does illustrate my point quite well. I'm a failr y funny guy, people here and people in real life have told me so; Even if I had done exactly what East Side did, right down to the movement of my arms and inflection of my voice, no one would have laughed. When East Side did it, everyone fell out like it was the funniest thing ever. In comparison, although exactly the same besides the performer, one gets a different audience reaction. One can only assume this is because of the audience's expectations about the performer's material.

Don't forget that I have red hair, Jeezis.
That makes me instantly freakish and clown-like.

i had added this to an 'old' Foul Balls thread:
for me it was comedy gold and i hope you and Jon remember this exchange... not sure if i have it word for word but it's close
BlackJeezis kind of phrased it the best at the game in Haverstraw last year. he or someone else on his team hit a shot down the left field line and people on our team were calling it foul so he yells out
"My balls are foul"
then later on he yelled at someone to 'suck his dick' and as he walked past JustJon, Jon says "yuck, no way!" and Jeezis asks him 'why not?' so JustJon replies "cause you got them foul balls"
it was great comedy and i'm not sure if anyone else caught it...

I have accepted that I'm the Steve Balboni of funny. I have a really low average, but when I get a hold of a fastball, I crush it 10 rows deep.

I used to be funny. Now I'm funny sometimes. Usually when I'm pissed. I'm content with having some one liners that can make people laugh. My comedy is to sophisticated for high school.

My comedy is to sophisticated for high school.
Somehow I doubt that.
I'm funny. Well at least online during AIM conversations. That counts right?

Somehow I doubt that.
You have to udnerstand that it doesn't take a lot in high school.
And I really think that you're just jealous of East Side Dave. Don't worry, so am I.

One time I said to snoogans to suck my dick. The exchange went like this:
Snoogans: Has entered Foundry Chat.
Duke: Hi snoogans, I was just shoving stuff about the 80s down people's throats.
Snoogans: Cool!
SatCam: Snoogans, smoke my cock.
Snoogans: No
SatCam: But I thought you smoked everything south of the border
Snoogans: Has left Foundry Chat.

It doesn't take a lot of sophistication to be above everyone else in high school. Politics for example, I like to watch news every night to stay informed on world events. Of course, nowadays some kids will think they know all about what's going on because Fat Mike tells them EVERYTHING. That's a different story for a different day though. A day that will never come.

Then again, Star Trek jokes are only funny to trekkies, so that doesn't make you the funniest kid in High School.

Well it doesn't take alot of sophistication to above the majority of the high school. There are always the really smart immigrant exchange students that kick everyones ass. I don't know where you live and what your high school is like I can't imagine it's any different than the one near here and all those kids are faggeets. All they care about is their social status and relationships. But my hatred for that is (like you stated) for a different day.

Mind you, this was seven years ago.

when i was around 10 i was in the backseat of the family car with two of my brothers when my mom opened the front passenger side door and almost hit a guy riding by on a bicycle. the guy on the bike got a little pissed and he turned and stared as he continued down the road. my eldest brother who was around 16 at the time said:
"Yeah, you better keep riding or i'll do a number on you"
my other brother who was around 12 said:
"Yeah what, a number two"
to this day it still makes me laugh...

Your right, I have had the misfortune of trying to pull off Jim Carrey impressions and no one has ever found them to be remotely funny. So I have made myself a bit of a "stick in the mud" kinda guy at work and not attempt to be a jokester, as is my nature, so people tend to regard me as too serious. But once in a while, I will come out with a gem that floors everyone and people look at me different after that.
