I saw this movie tonight for the first time...I thought it was pretty shitty except for the combat scenes,

My uncle and Godfather Maurice, was a Gunny(Gunnery sgt.) during WWII. He joined the Marines in 1937. He served all over the Pacific during the war. He also served in Saipan when it was invaded on June 15, 1944.

He would never talk about the war with us kids. One day, during a barbeque for my father's promotion to Lt. on the Fire Department, he got a little drunk and started talking about the invasion. He talked about landing on the beach and stepping on his friends bodies. He talked about the wholesale use of flamethrowers to burn out Japanese bunkers..He talked about running out of ammo one day and stabbing 3 japanese soldiers that were trying ti kill him and his 2 friends. He talked about buring alot of American bodies.

Where are people like that today?...All I hear is how our way of life sucks and how the government wants to fuck us...These people...My uncle, my Dad all like them just wanted to protect our country and then come home....

BTW, My Uncle Maurice retired from the Corps in 1977 and died the next year ...by himself

Your Uncle was part of what Brokaw called, The Greatest Generation.

From Amazon:

Veteran reporter and NBC Nightly News anchor Tom Brokaw went to France to make a documentary marking the 40th anniversary of D-day in 1984. Although he was thoroughly briefed on the historical background of the invasion, he was totally unprepared for how it would affect him emotionally.

Flooded with childhood memories of World War II, Brokaw began asking veterans at the ceremony to revisit their past and talk about what happened, triggering a chain reaction of war-torn confessions and Brokaw's compulsion to capture their experiences in what he terms "the permanence a book would represent."

=

I have no idea where that spirit went, but I think it was a diffierent time, a whole different World, one that I can look back at, but am utterly clueless as to what it was Really like back then.

=

And the invasion of Saipan, I read a bit about. You read these stories, and they seem like...stories, you don't think war could be that bad, I know that sounds stupid, but they read almost like fiction, coz I'm just read on and on with my jaw dropping going 'I can not even begin to imagine something like this happened, for real, with that many dead in so short a time'.

If I met your uncle I'd just shake his hand coz I wouldnt even begin to know what to say. Even 'Thanks' seems insufficient.

It's long but for me, worth it:

Good man. Marines like that are the guys who give the Corps it's massive reputation. Those Pacific battles were nasty.

When you think about the things that people accomplished between WWI and up until after WWII its really amazing how much was able to be accomplished, how much enthusiasm (sp?) people had. When you think that at the time, most Americans lived a far more simplistic lifestly with minimal creature comforts They somehow managed to attain what they were able to and bring about the era that we are in now and enjoy, yet at the same time have the freedom to bad mouth our lifestyle. Its sad, but its also by their efforts and sacrifice that we have this freedom. If we let them take these freedoms back as we seem to doing at an alarming rate, I dont think the future generations will give us a 10th of what those of that generation did.
