the thing that amazes me is how hypocritical the religion is. they have no problem doing anything in the name of alllah, even if the ends contradict the words written.
knock the catholics/ christians all you want, but it is the most progressive religion (and i am not practicing). they understand the idea of a speration of church and state, which is a brilliant idea. muslims have no concept and will acheive by any means; even if it sends the world into the dark ages again.

if it waasn't a misgynistic religion with a 2000 yr old mind set, it would be fine. but most muslims seek a muslim state. sucks but true.

This shouldn't surprise anyone - the only reason Sadr even agreed to the cease fire in the first place was because we killed so many of his militia soldiers that literally all that were left were children.
He's rebuilt his militia up a bit again, but in time he'll likely cease fire again, as we've already killed something like 300 (or more) of his men in the last few days.
I also have the suspicion that the new Iraqi government may decide to make an example out of him if he keeps it up - if the rumors about the new PM are true, he doesn't seem to tolerate terrorist action.
glib generalizations can be hours of madcap fun!
His mistake was not amending his post to say "Islamic fundamentalism".
Because virtually every negative thing that has or could be said about that brand of fanaticism is true.

Muqtada Al Sadr said he wants to be destroyed by an American Atomic Bomb, this won't happen, but if he wants to play the role of a martyr lets do him the favor and waste this motherfucker already. You don't negotiate with people like this. Also alot of his militiamen are holed up inside the Mosque in Najaf. According to the Geneva convention if a house of worship is used for offensive operations, it is not protected from being leveled. As I stated in my original post, If they dont respect their religion, why should we?

If he keeps it up, he won't even have to worry about American action against him - the Iraqi government is going to take care of him in ways as effective as anything we could do.

Again we try to negotiate with that bastard Al Sadr and nothing works. It seems that when these insurgents are getting their asses kicked, all of a sudden they want to negotiate, thus having the US fall into their trap so the militants can regroup.

I know a guy who now works in NY for the John Kerry campaign. That's how anti-war and anti-Bush and anti-Gun this guy is. Not that one follows the other, but thats his choice, JK. Musician friend, been in some pretty amazing bands. Anyway we were talking, and I brought up the standoff, and even he was so frustrated about this he said, 'I actually hope that we end it either way ASAP. Even if that means we wipe them out. They hate us no matter what, and nothing will stop them.
I didnt ask if by 'them' he meant the specific people involved in the standoff, or the 'insurgents' in general, or the Iraqi people, or the Middle East.
Dont know if hes right or wrong or if anyone can ever know what this cluster fuck has become but it got me thinking; there's a lot of complex opinions out there, and just coz someone says they are 'for' someone, doesnt mean they dont have a personal opinion of some, or many issues, that differ radically from what might be called the party line.
That seems to be missing, for me. There is a Middle Way. it may be a hail mary, and history shows, probably not, but...

OK the military is not stupid. We're not falling into any traps. Let the marine commanders make their own judgements without you accusing them of fucking up just because they're not killing enough Arabs for you. Way to support the troops, dick.

Fuck him and his fake patriotism bullshit. You can play armchair general without insulting the military, like they're a bunch of retards. He doesn't know what they're dealing with over there but he's only happy when they're acting on HIS bigotry. I know he's too stupid to know any better, but seriously, I I got to put with this "you don't support the troops" bullshit when I don't support Bush, but he can outright insult the military without a clue like that? Fuck that. He needs to think before he posts shit like that.

Fuck you YerDaddy you fucking dipshit, youre the idiot who would want to fight this war the politically correct way. My point was not to insult the military it was stating a fact that our military is fighting this war with one hand tied behind their back. Look what happened with Fallujah. If we fought the Japs and Nazis this way we would be speaking German and Japanese. If youre too stupid to realize that then thats your problem. The fact is that how the fuck are we going to finally beat those scumbags when we constantly fighting then negotiate? wake the fuck up retard!!!!

who's telling them to negotiate when they should be fighting? Who's tying they're hands? They're making their decisions based on a long term strategy with bigger and broader goals than just to kill people. There's nothing politically correct holding them back or even about the desicion to negotiate a cease-fire. You have no idea what the fuck you're talking about, and next time get a fucking clue before you assume the guys over there are stupid.

Unfortunately, Sartre's No Exit probably works as well.
It is too sad to be funny, but the Neo-Cons adventures in Neo-Colonialism certainly meets the absurd threshold. Even Kafka would be impressed. Or horrified. I'm not sure which anymore.
Hate is a strong word. But I'm beginning to hate George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and their merry band of arrogant fuck-ups almost as much as I hate the al-Qaeda evildoers that they are supposed to be killing. I cannot/don't want to believe that W is even money to get rehired. :(

Juan Cole's idea about getting French and Russian troops into Iraq is plausible except for one thing: the US will never put its forces under any foreign commanders, even under NATO authority. But I don't think it would be necessary to have foreign commanders with sufficient NATO cooperation, and I don't know why he makes a big deal about the troops being French or Russian. Hell, Kerry, if he wins, is going to be under all-out assault by republicans enough as it is. Kerry just needs to start listening to the military and the State Dpt. again, instead of shuffling around the generals until they get one that tells them what they want to hear. It'll be enough to get the neo-cons out.

Potential good news!
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr accepted a peace plan Wednesday to end fighting in Najaf that would disarm his militiamen and remove them from a holy shrine where they are hiding out, according to an al-Sadr spokesman. However, al-Sadr wanted to negotiate how the deal would be implemented. (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5685031/)
Yeah, I wouldn't trust this guy any further than I could throw him, but still, any thing that at least hints of the possibility of less dead people is a welcome change at this point.
It does piss me off that the coalition forces are getting "more" of the blame for the fighting around the shrine. Sure, it's a sacred site, but there are people hiding there and USING it as a base and staging ground for violent actions. It's not like they're just hiding there and that's it...they're using it FOR violence and death.

Whoops! Here's a shocker...
NAJAF, Iraq - Prime Minister Ayad Allawi issued a "final call" Thursday to Shiite insurgents to disarm and withdraw from a revered shrine after his government threatened a massive onslaught by Iraqi forces. Allawi's last-ditch warning came shortly after the militants' leader, radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, rejected the government's ultimatum with a vow to seek "martyrdom or victory." (http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040819/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq_040819174906)
Well, it's pretty much impossible for this to not end badly now.

Really, though, what can Allawi do? You can't negotiate with Sadr - the man wants to become the Ayatollah of Iraq.
It's just a bad situation, one which isn't really Allawi's fault. Iraq & the world would be a better place with Sadr rotting in a ditch, but making a martyr of him would be a nightmare; but leaving him alive is another nightmare. What SHOULD he do?

I'm not saying he's making a mistake...but there's no possible way an Iraq civil war can be a good thing at this point. And this kind of conflict seems to be headed right towards that...
