View Full Version : Vegetarian argument

Last night, I went out with my vegetarian lady and a few of her co-workers. At the bar, her friends ordered some appetizers (mozz sticks, poppers and chicken fingers). My girl asked them to keep the chicken away from her (ok, understandable). But something puzzled me.
Once I called her in the early evening, and she told me she was putting vegetarian buffalo wings in the oven. She's also talked about veggie burgers (which I've seen before). My question to her was this:
If vegetarians are so offended by eating meat, then why do the style the food after some kind of meat (buffalo wings, burger, etc). One time she had told me that if I tried one of the veggie buffalo wings she bought, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between them and the real thing. This leads me to believe that they are also trying to make them taste like meat.
I would think that if they were truely offended by the idea of eating animal flesh, that they would not want something that tastes like it, right? She tried to argue her way out of it but even a couple of her co-workers sided with me. Why would they make them taste like meat?

BUSTED! Nice call, Wilee. I HAVE encountered some really hardcore vegans who are basically chefs and have gone out of their way to make completely new dishes that don't resemble meat in any way, but for most vegetarians, you're very right...they're still "mentally" eating meat. Kinda like lesbians who decide to whip out the strap-on. TRAITORS!
Vegetarians also tend to be much more flatulent than the rest of us.

I'm certainly not a vegetarian, but I could see how using vegetable products that taste like meat would be a good way of "converting" others to your side.
Kind of like patches to help smoker's curb their cravings while they are trying to quit.
I'd hazard a guess to say that the biggest group of people who purchase the faux meat products are:
1. Those folks who are former omnivores and are now on the vegetarian path.
2. Folks like me who sprinkle in the occasional item in order to meet certain dietary restrictions concerning the amount of authentic meat I'm supposed to have in a week (insert joke about how "authentic" your meat is here).
I'm betting their emotions/mind tell them one thing about meat eating, while their taste buds are remembering and telling them something else.

What's the problem? You could enjoy the taste and texture of meet, but feel that ethically it's not right to eat it. So you make vegetables that taste like meat.
I'm not sure what the issue is?

I've sampled many vegetarian products.
They range from passable to (only) slightly better than vomit in taste.
But none have EVER tasted like meat. Just soy product designed to mimic the taste of meat.

When I first became a vegetarian the veggie and soy foods fashioned after beef and chicken were great transition foods. It was kind of cool to have a chick'n patty that tasted a lot like chicken but was totally soy. Also, a lot of those foods are really convenient.
Now that I am really comfortable and famillar with soy and tofu products, I don't eat a lot of that stuff anymore.

Ew, yes. And stinky farts too. Also, I've found them to be fatter than I figured they would be. Instead of having 4 helpings of bread pudding followed by an extra large Domino's Dominator, how about a fucking steak you fat fucks.

If vegetarians are offended at the idea of eating animal flesh (life form) but not vegitables (life form), arent they, in effect, practicing species discrimination of a sort? Is one form of life more "valuable" than another? Have more worth? Less important or significance simply because it sprouts from the ground? Or, because flesh bearing life forms have human-like qualities that they attribute values to them that plant life does not possess? Clearly, all life absorbs energy from one source or another, and if the argument is that plants absorb a kind of energy that is morally acceptable, then their argument for not consuming corporeal sources of energy is kind of meaningless because those very same life forms do not practice that moral practice. Granted, we as an intellectually enlightened species can say "ones good, anothers bad" based upon what is closer to some mantra, but for every rule, there is exceptions and no life form is purely uncourrupted. Everything is a series of degrees, some closer to some ideals than others, but all inherently impure.

I think it comes to whether or not the lifeform can feel pain. Or at least, so they say...

Furie, I've only seen her demonstrate "intolerance" of eating meat once. I mean, sure, she's plead her case about why she does it, but she isn't forcing it on anyone. Her asking to have the chicken moved away from her is no different than me asking to have liver moved away from me (can't stand that stuff). But if she were forcing me to only eat vegetables and stuff, then we'd have a problem.
Like she told me, her ex tried to "change" her and get her off the veggie kick (which she's been on for almost 20 years), but she said "no one is going to change her" in that respect. Well, it's unlikely that I'll become a vegetarian. I like my steak and (real) hamburgers.

the vegetarians that try to preach to people about how they shouldnt eat meat cause it kills animals piss me off. if you are a veg and do you thing, great, good for you. but when you try to get me to feel guilty for eating a steak, you can go fuck your self.
plus, vegetarians kill just as many animals for their food as meat eaters do. dont believe me, well take a look at this then:
Vegetarians are killers! (http://maddox.xmission.com/grill.html)

Snoogans, that website is funny as hell. How'd you find it? It's like a guy yells at a lightpost on the street everyday just found the internet and now he can telecommute.
But, believe it or not, he's wrong. His most glaring error is that for every calorie obtained from a cow it takes 10 calories from plants to produce it. So, for every one fuzzy creature holocaust acre of produce conumed by humans, it takes ten fuzzy creature holocaust acres to produce the same amount of food from meat. He cites some scientist in Oregon to refute this argument, who says it's a different kind of plant, but he doesn't explain why that's even relevant. They're both nut-jobs.
While this guy's point is that animals die in growing produce, eating produce does not kill more animals than eating meat. That's just good old fashioned crazy talk.
