View Full Version : My Computer Has the HIV

My internet explorer home page was always set at optonline.net/home. Recently, I reset my google.com options to let every website through with no security. Hello porno! Ever since then, this website has taken over my internet explorer home page:
http://www.coolsearch.biz/
When I try to change back, or block it, it a) always resets to http://www.coolsearch.biz/ and b) will not let me block it because this site is listed somewhere else under another internet setting (which I cannot find).
So I did a search on my computer, and it came up in my winzip. I deleted all of the files it found AND uninstalled my winzip in the add/remove programs setting. That http://www.coolsearch.biz/ is still coming up though! I also have a pop up that is something like "fuck-teens-russian." I have no idea what that is all about.
I run my Norton Anti-Virus and nothing comes up. Awhile back someone posted a free virus (AVG 6.0) stopper that I downloaded to make sure my pc doesn't have any viruses. Every day it finds trojan viruses on my computer. Every day the same pop ups come up telling me to use this AVG to get rid of the trojan virus.
Now my internet explorer is so slow that it should be riding the short bus. I have to use my MSN to do any Internet surfing, which is a big pain in the ass because when I click on a link it automatically opens up in IE.
Any other suggestions on how to fix my computer? Please help!!!!

Try installing Ad-Aware and running it. It helps get rid of alot of those spyware programs. You can find it at http://www.lavasoft.de/.
Also, try deleting you Internet Explorer cache files. To do that click "tools" "internet options" "general" "delete files" make sure "delete all offline content" is checked, then hit "ok"
Hopefully these help a little.
EDIT: or do what scorpion said above me :P

Use mozilla firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) as your browser and ad-aware is great. I run it every day.

There is also a program out called "Hijack This!" which can help. I find Ad-aware to be sufficient, usually.

spybot is just as good as adware except that it doesn't update its detection list as often as adaware ...
i usually run both once a week to be on the safe side ...
spybot also has a free immunization feature that automatically blocks potential miscreants from infecting the PC ... the teatimer also protects your registry from being altered ...

I have friend who works in the IT dept of a college and they swear by spybot.
I personaly run both spybot and ad-aware. Sometimes one finds something the other doesn't

Spybot suuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks. It tends to lock up my system, conflicts with other programs, is slow as hell, and NEVER updates. I have AdAware, Pop-Up Stopper, Bazooka Spyware Scanner and AVG Virus Detection, and my system has never worked smoother. I get zero pop-ups, next to NO junk mail, haven't had a virus in over a year...and all without Spybot.

OK I downloaded spyboyt, as well as run the AVG program that I have to detect viruses. I still have the same problem with the internet exlporer (http://www.coolsearch.biz/).
Also, try deleting you Internet Explorer cache files. To do that click "tools" "internet options" "general" "delete files" make sure "delete all offline content" is checked, then hit "ok"
I tried that too. And I dowloaded that fox browser too.

Ad-aware seems to be the best thing out there now. My store Best Buy recomends Spy Sweeper 2.0 they say its alot better because unlike Adaware it doesnt let Spyware come into you computer, rather than just deleting spyware like adaware does. Is this true?

What's the big deal with Firefox??? Why is it better? Do you have to put a home page on it?

Kat, I'd offer you help with this one, but that Cool Search thing is the one thing that I have not been able to fix. A friend of mines system has that as well and I tried every single thing I could think of short of reformatting the drive and reinstalling Windows. I tried Ad-aware, Spybot, Hijack This, Webroot Spyware Sweeper, as well as removing numerous entries in the registry and nothing could remove it.
The only solutions I can think of that will remove this thing are to either pour through your installed programs and remove them one by one, or reformat your hard drive and reinstall Windows.
I might have been able to solve the problem on my friends PC if I was able to remove all his programs on this system, however he didn't want me to do that. If you've tried ad-aware, and spybot, and the problem is still there, you might want to consider reformatting, unless someone else here has encountered this one and can solve it.
My website (http://www.osirusonline.com/) has links to download both Ad-aware and Spybot right on the mainpage.

Reef -
do a search in the registry to see if you could remove any occurances if it in there.
Just make sure you back it up first.

JP - It didn't happen on my system, but rather my friends. Though I did a search through the registry as well. Plus I did backups, I did every concievable thing I could think of short of removing all of his games. I'm certain it's linked to one of the games installed on his system. So as I suggested to Kat, remove each program one by one and check to see if it solves the problem. It'd be tedious but it would likely fix the problem and help her to identify the source of the problem. That is of course if Ad-aware or Spybot aren't able to stop it. In the case of my friends system it still wasn't able to fix it.
