Review: The Manchurian Candidate (2004)

Timely movie, just in time for the election season and is chock full of political inside humor to make it one of the most interesting films this year. Jonathan Demme's newest film is a remake of the 1962 film "The Manchurian Candidate", based on a book by Richard Condon is a paranoid classic story of assassination. Demme has packed the new film with tension and great actors and fine locations in Washington and New York City (Penn Station), but this is not as good as the 62 film by John Frankenheimer.

The cast is more than good. Denzel Washington takes over the Frank Sinatra role of Col. Ben Marco, a Desert Storm leader that is sure he was involved in some sort of brainwash project. He had recommended the Medal of Honor to Sgt Ray Prentiss Shaw (Liev Schreiber is cast in the Lawrence Harvey role and looks just like him). A hero of the Kuwait firefight (or was he?) and the son of Senator Ellie Shaw (Meryl Streep). It's 2004 and Ray Shaw is now in congress and ready to take the vice presidential position. Marco has been having dreams about the Kuwait mission, he sees Shaw killing a soldier and may have killed someone himself. When he meets Shaw at a Washington insider party, Marco confronts him and they connect. The paranoid tale farther into mind control and a corporation called "Manchurian Global" (The Carlyle Group?), around the bend is an assassination to get Shaw in the top spot. Michael Moore is probably dancing the jig!

Meryl Streep is set to get an Oscar in this funny and chilling role of Shaw's power-mad mother (Hillary?) and Schreiber is sympathetic and winning as Shaw. Denzel is better in a role much like his "Courage under Fire" role. Funny cameos by Al Franken (in joke by Demme) and a fine job by Jon Voight as a good minded senate leader. The new version is no where in the league of it's original because it is not as fresh (there have been countless political thrillers since 1962). I will recommend this film for it's subversive intent and detail to the election process and Demme's best movie since "Philadelphia". Look for Demme regulars like Charles Napier, Harry Northup, Tracey Walter, and film legend Roger Corman (Demme's film daddy). I want you all to see the 62 original first because of the timely fashion of both movies (Kennedy was killed after this film was made). BTJ says " where the fuck is the Queen of Diamonds?"

I saw it. It sucked. As someone who saw the original and loved it. I absolutely hated this movie. I'm not even trying to compare one to the other, it was just a horribly put together movie filled with so many god-awful Hollywood cliches.

You're slipping Lil Tony, you loved White Chicks and now you loved this piece of trash.

I was SO let down by this movie. Typically, I HATE remakes, but this one had so much going for it, I had high hopes.

Man, bad move.

Maybe it's because the original is in my top five favorite movies of all time, so this one didn't stand a chance, but WOW, what a cock-up.

The key to the original? Simplicity and subtlty. This new version didn't have a shred of either. And as hoary as it usually seems, the "Chinese communist menace" worked SO much better than the "scary big business" threat this time around.

"BOOOOOOOOO" THIS MOVIE!!!

Man you guys are bumming me out!

I was going to see this movie, since I LOVE the original, but now I may be in for a stinker :(

I'm still going to see it though, even though I knew from the beginning that it would never hold up to the original. It's so kick ass, I love watching Frankie Blue Eyes get to use his judo-karate-chop 'em up skills.

Another Contra and LSP joint production

The key to the original? Simplicity and subtly.

The above sentence to me, is the best review of Both movies. I plead with those who havent seen the original, and it seems to be many [Fez hasnt seen it. that was weird] to rent it, netflix it, whatever.

Simplicity is a special effect consisting of the most Awesome 360 Degree shot don in a movie in the opening sequence, which takes place in the 'Spring Lake Hotel' which is where one board member lives, and I live two towns over.

Back on track; this shot, alternating between the 'true' and hypnotic states the soldiers are in is just the perfect example of working with the medium.

See the Original = My review.

Right on, Mizzle!

Don't forget the whole dream/hallucination sequence.

Frankenheimer was working on all cylinders with the original, and it's a joy to watch.

I thought I was going to a Manchurian Restaurant when my wife told me that we were actually going to see this movie.

I turned the car around.

I don't think this is going to be a popular opinion, but as much as I like the original, I don't think it has aged terribly well.

Well I for one am happy with this review, because Little Tony got to work in his usual jab at Bush & co. His reviews would be NOTHING without them!

Review: The Manchurian Candidate (1962)

The 60's were not just a turbulent era but as far as movies go, the greatest filmmakers of our time were leaving TV to embark on new and relevant films. John Frankenheimer was one of the greats, The Train-Seven Days In May- Seconds-The Birdman Of Alcatraz. He was a New Yorker with a sense of humor and very much an insider to Washington politics, a friend to Robert Kennedy to the time of his assassination.

Frank Sinatra produced and starred in "The Manchurian Candidate", written by satirist George Axelrod from a novel by Richard Condon about a group of sleeper assassins/soldiers that are brainwashed by the Red Chinese in the Korean War. One of them is Sgt. Ray Shaw (Lawrence Harvey of the UK) who's mother is married to a redbaiting rightwing McCarthy-like dolt named Senator John Yerkis Islen (funny character actor James Gregory of Barney Miller fame). Mom is played by Angela Lansbury (she was only 2 yrs older than Harvey in real life) and she is the screens most awful mother ever. Frank Sinatra plays Col Bennet Marco, leader of the captured group of brainwashed troops that is now on the edge and uncovers the real events of the brainwash. He must get to Shaw and find out the mystery of their captures.

This film was made before the death of JFK and was pulled from release afterwards. The story does wonderfully weird shit with the camera and the brainwashing by the Red Chinese is hilarious and brutal for it's time. The action is so groundbreaking including one of the first martial arts sequences to incorporate into the storyline of an American feature. A fierce hand to hand fight between Sinatra and fellow RatPacker Henry Silva (playing a Korean agent) in the center of an apartment building. Sinatra, Harvey and Lansbury deserve praise for their superb acting. Frankenheimer has made great films but this is the most original of all his work ("Seconds" is on it's heels). A must keep for the collection (and Janet Leigh was pretty hot back in the day), a funny scene in Central Park and the use of a deck of cards is sublime. Enjoy!

I felt like I had ADHD when I was watching this movie. It was awful. At least I had fun cracking jokes with the people I went with.

I think J Lo would have been much better in that role.
