I can not comprehend buying TV Shows on DVD. I am positive they are on a TV channel somewhere which you can watch, or tape. Also, its a great novelty and I am sure you will watch it once. But really, how many times will you ever watch it again. I started to fall into the DVD trap a few years ago and started to buy a whole bunch of movies. I got to around 20 or 25 and then realized how fucking stupid it was. I really never re-watch the movies. And If I wanted to see it, blockbuster is right next door. 5 bucks for a rental. meaning I can rent it 4 times to break even on owning it. Somehow people got brainwashed into thinking that DVD's were SOOO great that they needed to own almost every movie they have ever saw. It will all be great until 5 years from now when the newest DVD players come out that support better quality and more feature filled DVD's. Then everyone will have to re-purchase their collections. not to mention how stupid all those collector sets are. Who the fuck can't buy one? Hence not really making them THAT collectable.
Now I have a DVD burner with copy software, so if I do rent something which I really like, I will copy it. It only costs me the rental price (which I would have done either way) and the cost of a blank DVD.

I understand this.

. . . . but . . . but . . . you just said that you never really rewatch the movies. So why even go to the hassle of burning them?
I almost got sucked in to the buying every DVD concept. Then I realized that there are only certain movies that I will watch over and over again when they come on TV.
Now, I only purchase those particular movies. I do this so that I can watch them unedited and commercial free whenever I feel like it.
My DVD purchasing philosophy only applies to movies so far. I've yet to consider purchasing any TV series (if nothing else because I'd have to wait far too long to snag all of the seasons). That's where TIVO and a DVD Burner would come in handy.

I knew someone would call me out on the copying and not re-watching. This is a good point. Usually, the copies I make I never watch, maybe everyonce in a while. But I will take the copies and give them to people to borrow, and then not really care of I do not get it back. SUch as Matrix 3. I rented it, copied it and loaned it to a friend, who has yet to return it. Since it only cost me a dollar, I could really care less.
Truthfully I have run out of blank DVD's and am to lazt to go buy some new ones, or I forget when I am there. Hence, I have not copied a movie for a while.

Although I would not buy Alf, I do enjoy buying movie DVDs, because I will watch a movie I like over and over again.

Oh, I'm a complete and utter whore when it comes to buying DVDs. I was just as bad with the VHS tapes too. And, yes, from time to time I have my moments of clarity and thing the heard out.
I still have quite a bit - as long as I think I might want to watch them again, and want the freedom to watch them whenever I want to, it can stay. You never know when you have to watch a Godzilla or martial arts films!
Also, a lot of the films I decide to buy I might not be able to find at the local Hollywood Video.
But, yeah, the TV series on DVDs seems a bit nuts, and I have plenty of them. Very rarely have I felt compelled to go back and watch them a second time. Some exceptions are the animated ones (SIMPSONS, FAMILY GUY and SOUTH PARK).
Oh! And GOOD TIMES!
Ain't we lucky we have them...!

I've built up a pretty large collection of DVDs, but -
a) the lion's share of those were picked up during the 1999-2000 range when dot.coms were bending over backwards undercutting each other on prices. I kept an eye on DVDTalk (http://www.dvdtalk.com) looking out for good online deals. I actually kept track of my purchases at that point, and my average DVD cost came in under $6.00 per release. At that cost, I'd pick up movies I'd never seen and unload them on ebay or half.com if I didn't like them. At that cost, it's better than a rental, because you can watch them at your convenience, and if you like them you always have them on hand to watch later.
b) kid videos - 'nuff said. Kids watch movies over and over, so your usually better off buying than renting.
c) I do watch movies multiple times, so purchasing makes sense. You also have them on hand to pull screen grabs for sigs, etc. There's also always something on-hand if you're in the mood for a movie and don't want to go to Blockbuster.
d) Traveling - When I'm on the road, I take a CD travel folder full of DVDs so I have something to watch. Traveling isn't terribly conducive to rental, unless you have one of those memberships with a monthly fee from Blockbuster or Netflix.
I'll admit, I don't usually purchase TV seasons, but of the ones I have are ones that I have or will watch multiple times - Simpsons, Mr. Show, Sopranos, Freaks & Geeks, etc.
