Is there a speaker icon in the system tray?
(in the lower right hand corner of the screen near the clock)
If so, right click on it and see if any of the settings are set to mute. You would see a check mark where it says mute if this were so.
If there is no speaker icon in the tray, than do the following....
Start Menu
Settings
Control Panel
When the control panel is open look for the icon that looks like it speaker, it should say "Sounds and Audio Devices" In there should be settings for the volume control.
Also if you want to be able to control the volume settings you can have the speaker icon display in the system tray by default. There will be a check box that says "Place volume icon in the task bar"
