3. Gang Starr

Dude, Guru owned me when I was 16.

It's a tough call. There's so much to choose from. It's like saying best rock band of all time, without the added benefit of a Beatles or a Rolling Stones to anchor the argument.
How are you gonna compare someone like De La Soul to Run-DMC to The Beastie Boys to Biggie to NWA to the Wu-Tang to Jurassic Five to BDP to The Roots? What about someone like Sublime? They hasd major hip-hop sounds as well as reggae and punk and ska. The list could go on. I don't think there's a definitive answer. My faves?
Wu - Tang
The Pharcyde (With just one album as well. BizarreRide II was fucking insane incredible)
Biggie
Those are I guess my favorites, but there are so many that were good, great, awesome that I haven't mentioned that I like just as much.

No Cypress Hill yet? Their recent stuff, well pretty much everything after Black Sunday, hasn't been all that great, but their first couple of albums were damn good. In fact it was hearing 'Hand on the Glock' when I was like 13 or 14, I guess, that really got me listening to rap. At the time, it was so raw and violent and rebellious to me, not like anything else I'd ever heard; the pre-fab rebellion and angst of the Nirvanas and the Pearl Jams that just came off as fake. I was like, "Wooooow! This will make my mother insane. She's gonna absolutely hate this." Plus there's no other sound in hip-hop that can compare to B-Real's nasal twang.

And another group that I think were just a little too early to get the kind of credit they deserved was Das-EFX. They were kind of exploring the area that Wu-Tang and Redman really brought to the forefront, that trademark East Coast, stripped-down rhyme, gritty style, just a little earlier than everyone was ready for. If they had peaked maybe a year later, I think they would have gone a lot further.

Hey man, "Labcab..." ain't no slouch.

I didn't get into it as much as BizarreRide. And then, I think, they went their separate ways and started producing? A shame really.

I keep thinking of more things to add. Can we put Eminem on this list? Of late he's become a cartoon character, that's true, but his rhymes are awesome and his flow is impeccable. I would think he at least has to get consideration.

The Roots are one of the best live bands ever...period.

Too bad they've yet to really capture that in an album. Close...but no cigar.

And man, who's bringing up Grandmaster Flash? That's like bringing up Too $hort or Whodini or The Sugarhill Gang...just 'cuz you're first doesn't make you the best. And besides, Flash is all about the turntables. These are RAP lists. Turntablism falls under hip-hop.

I loved Pete Rock and CL Smooth. I think Mecca and the Soul Brother is one of my top 10 albums ever. And there was a period of time where it seemed like Pete Rock was remixing every rap single that came out.

Other than that, maybe NWH, especially their controversial album, Kill Whitey.

I asked Eminem if he had a list and this is what he said:

I got a list here's the order of my list that it's in.
It goes, Reggie, Jay-Z, Tupac and Biggie, Andre from Outcast, Jada, Kurupt,
Nas and then me. But in this industry I'm the cause of a lot of envy,
so when I'm not put on this list the shit does not offend me.
That's why you see me walk around like nothing's bothering me.
