I had this nagging problem with my toilet. These dark lines would appear on the walls of the bowl and Id scrub them down and it would be good for a few weeks and then theyd come back. I couldnt figure it out. I even scrubbed the inside of the tank (the water well) thinking that some cruddy water or something was causing it, and I also would put in the clorine tabs tryng to make the stains go away, to no avail. I noticed yesterday that the water seemed to be rippling and I realised that water was flowing into the bowl, but very gently. So, I opened up the top and looked down at the flap that covers the hole in the bottom when you flush it, and sure enough, it was warping and decomposing. The black marks on the walls were from the decomposing rubber of the flapper! So, I went to the hardware store and asked the guy about what they are called and he said they are "flappers". Amazingly simple name for such a device! Mine was attached to the tube that water flows into by "ears" (their technical name) and I simply had to remove the old one and cut the new one with sissors in a certain area so that it would fit and it went on very easily. I also had to attach its chain to the rod that is attached to the thing you flush the toilet with (Im sure it has a name not unlike "flapper", probably something like "flusher")
Anyway, if you have annoying dark stains on your toilet bowl, it could very well be your crapper's flapper is no longer flappin'.
