If Varitek had said nothing A-Rod would have gone to first, no problems. Pitchers and batters jaw at each other all the time. Varitek instigated it. If their gonna fine people for fighting, the guy who instigates it should pay a sterner penalty than the other guy.

Secondly, and this is more important to me than the instigation thing. A catcher cannot, repeat cannot, go after someone while wearing his mask. It's the same way the DH protects the pitchers in the American League, except it's not institutionalized through the rules. I feel really strongly about this. If the catcher's gonna go after someone, which Varitek did and I have no problem with him doing it, he has to take the mask off before he does it.

Like I said in the Yankee thread, I liked Varitek for the team player and emotional leader that he is, but there's no way a non-partial observer fails to see that JV comes off as the a-hole in this situation, not A-Rod.

A hockey facial is a normal game-to-game occurrence...any contact in baseball is illegal, so if you're goign to do it, do it right. The mitt to the mush was just a cowardly act in my view, which was only comppounded by the fact that he did it from behind the safety of his mask.

Had A-Rod made a beeline for the mound, it's the catcher & third baseman's job to try to keep him from getting there. Under that condition, I wouldn't think anything of Varitek taking him down anyway he needed to. But the way this played out was not the way it's supposed to work.
