View Full Version : A New Yankee Stadium

Mike Francesa was just saying that NewsChannel 4 was doing a story that says the Yankees are going to announce that they will build a 700 million dollar stadium across the street from Yankee Stadium

I mean there is nothing wrong with the current stadium correct? This would be such a tragedy as you cannot tear that stadium down. There is just so much history there. Besides, I have yet to go to a game there. :)
There is a 3D rendering of what the new park would look like along with a new Fenway floating around somewhere I just can't find it.

fellas, all history aside, the park's old. the walkways are narrow, and the seating areas are filthy. and lets be honest, this isnt really the original stadium, even though its on the same grounds. as long as the new stadium doesnt have a brick exterior or green outfield walls, it'll be uniquely yankee.

Well in All Star baseball 2005 they have a new version of yankee stadium that you can play games in......it looked nice the dimensions are the same and the monuments are in play like they used to be....and it's a retractable roof

things change ... people bitch about the post renovation stadium ...
as long as they keep it in the same area, it won't be so bad ...
what will suck, though, if they cater the newstadium to corporations ... say a 35-40 thousand capacity stadium with dozens of luxry boxes ... it would be like MSG during the mid-90s with the average fan being priced out ...

you would have to imagine the 'taxpayer' will still foot the bill in the end as they pay the exorbitant(sp?) ticket prices, parking prices, hot dog and beer prices... i guess this way at least your getting something for your money...
when you think about it, how could they spend near a billion and you know it will be a billion when it gets done and still pay the executive's and player's salaries... that's one good business they have there

Actually there have been several stadiums that have been financed completely by the team owners--Pro Player in Miami and Fed Ex Field in DC. (both were actually named after the people who paid for them, Joe Robbie and Jack Kent Cooke, but the naming rights were sold when those folks died and the team changed hands).
So, anyone catching the game at George Steinbrenner Stadium this weekend?

All I have to say is, if they decide to commit an absolute crime and tear down the current Yankee Stadium, the new one BETTER fuckin' be called nothing else but "YANKEE STADIUM". I don't wanna see any dumbass corporation names attached to it. If the Yankees start playing in "Duracell Field" or "The Pepsi Center" I'm gonna be fuckin' PISSED.

Nothing wrong with building a new stadium. But why in the same neighborhood?
That was exactly my first thoughts. The last two times I was at Yankee Stadium were two Old-Timers Days games. Now granted there's not much worse of a travel day for that, especially by car, and i was not driving, so I had no choice; and I vowed never again. Not sitting on the bridges. Again.
And I sound like Mr. Diplomat, but Snoogs and Reeshy, if memory serves, are both correct. Hell yeah we know George has a seeming bottomless wallet, but I think he has indeed leaned heavily/played hardball, whatever you call it with NYC, to get a new stadium with GS and the NYYs footing as little of it as possible.
FYI OK LOL NASA CIA MASH

They haven't put out the blue prints yet but they are planning a hotel/convention place. Plus, you will need parking. My guess is that it has to come down but they will have something there to commerate it. I mean there is still a plaque for the Polo Grounds and they tore that down 40 years ago.

They definitely won't be playing at Shea. The only reason that they are building the new stadium accross the street is so they don't have to move while it's being built. It's a very stupid concept, but George refuses to go back to Shea. If the new stadium was built on the exact same site, I don't think people would mind.
The irony is that by the time the new stadium is ready, the Yankees may suck, what with their lousy farm system. And what if Steinbrenner dies?

Ok, as far as I am concerned, if George wants to build his own stadium then that is fine with me. Knowing him he will pull out ALL of the stops. I have no fear that they will not turn it into a "Duracell Stadium" or something emensly stupid like that. The Yanks would BUY half of the companies in America. That place will ALWAYS be Yankee Stadium. Should they move the location of the Staduim? HELL NO!!! There is enough history in that stadium to make it a landmark in NYC. That is like asking should they knock down the Garden and build it somewhere else.

The "somewhere else" that they'll be building it is across the street from where it now stands. McCombs Dam Park is one of the places used for overlow parking during playoff & World Series games, so it's not like they're putting it in Jersey, it's few hundred feet away.
This option is the closest thing they could come to rebuilding it on the very same site, without having to play at Shea for the 4 or 5 season that it would take to knock down Yankee Stadium, clear it out, and do a complete re-build.

Yes but think of how horrendous the parking would be while they play in the current stadium and the new one is being built at the same time.
It would take twice as long as it already does to get to a game and with half of the parking.

half of the parking.
Again...McCombs Dam Park is used for overflow parking during the playoffs & World Series, not day to day. It's a park & ballfield on a normal day. We're talking about a hundred cars or so that would just have to park at the further lots & walk a few blocks.
I can put up with a tough treck, even if I were to go to 4-6 playoff games in the same year, for a new, state of the art Yankee Stadium that looked just like the old one in all the important ways, but modern in all the behind-the-scenes ways, and was basically in the same place.
But, assuming I'm out of my mind on this, what's your proposal, Tom?

Well for once...and I can almost hear the laughter as this is being read...I am at a loss for ideas as to how they could pull this off with little or no inconvenience to the fans. I guess it just seems that...although it is only a few hundred feet from the old stadium (Much like the Vet and whatever the new piece of shit those philly fans sit in) it would still feel...I don't know...wrong.
I cannot see Yankee Staudium anywhere else but exactly where it is.
But...progress must be made.
I do have a question however...how long did the OLD Yankee Staduim stand for before it was re-done.? This current one is only what...30 years old?

So the old stadium stood for 50 years...why not wait for another 10 before we talk about re-building?
Because the "old" stadium and the "new" stadium are technically one in the same. They gutted the old stadium, but didn't level it...so there are parts of this stadium that are 81 years old.
The reason why we can't wait another 10 years to start talking about rebuilding it is that once you start talking about it, you're still years from breaking ground, and once you break ground, you're still 4 or 5 years from completion. Anyone remember that 500 lb piece of steel that fell out of our beloved stadium onto an empty (thank God) seating area on a random Monday in 1998, just days before the Stadium's 75th birthday?
Tom, you & I were at the now-infamous Yanks/Orioles ALCS Game 1 in 1996, sitting up with God. Tony Torasco went back to the wall, some kid botched a basket catch, the umpire signaled home run, & the stadium went nuts...do you remember that place shaking? I sure as hell do.
The team can't wait for it to crumble around them before they start to think about their next move. I love that place as much as anyone, and I'll likely sell off a kidney to buy a few seats & hunks of concrete when they gut it, but there's no time like the present to start thinking about the next greatest stadium on the face of the earth. And don't worry...come October, the ghosts will find their way across the street.

That is like asking should they knock down the Garden and build it somewhere else.
You know this isn't the original Garden right? It's MSG IV and it's the third location. It's only been where it is now since 1968. And the rumor is that they want to build MSG V closer to the west side and that is why they are so opposed to the Jets getting a stadium over there.

Technically yes 5th splits the island but I don't consider 6th ave the west side. 10th to the West Side Highway is what I consider the west side. But that really has nothing to do with my orginal post. My point was that Justice had said that moving Yankee stadium would be like moving MSG. I was just wondering if he knew MSG had already moved a bunch of times and they are talking about moving it again.

Well yknow you can always erase the anxiety of driving to the stadium by taking the ferry yeah it is 17 bucks from Weehawken but you have to stay till the last out because it doesn't leave till half an hour after.....so you don't have to leave to beat traffic...I was thinking the night the game went thirteen innings with the Sox or with Boone's homerun how many people left to beat the traffic...I mean the people that stay till the end of games are either die hards or taking the ferry

I think they had to scrap the retractable roof part of it though.....and Michael kay was just saying they'd only take down parts of the stadium that stands now and use it as a Little League field and the new stadium would look more like the older version than the version we see today...the stuff in that article is from the original idea that came about when the beam fell.....it says the city will pay for it and Mayor Rudy Giuliani....neither of which are currently the case

Since this thread was started the Sox are 27-9. Is the ghost of Babe Ruth mad that they are tearing down the House That Ruth Built?

"We expect to announce it in the near future, and we hope to break ground in 2006 and be ready to play in 2009.''

The new stadium will be built just north of the existing facility in the Bronx, and is designed to seat 50,800.
The average fan will be fine. 50,000 is still 4.1 mil season
capacity, which they have never drawn in their history. And there are
bleachers and upper level seats that are reasonably priced in every
stadium.

I have an enormous attachment to the current Yankee
stadium, but buildings dont last forever. And rebuilding takes too long
to do it on the same site. I dont want to play in Shea for two years.
That place is a shithouse dump with airplane noise (sorry Metsies!).
Once the new building is built, EVERYONE will love and embrace it,
except for a few lonely holdouts. The old building will remain standing
as a musuem. which I must admit feels weird.

If you've been to
Camden Yards, and some of the other new parks you'll realize even
Yankee Stadium isn't up to current standards. Its just a fact.
Can placebos cause side effects? And if so, are the side effects real?
Cakes, I felt the same way about Boston Garden and feel the same about Fenway. Even though I loved(d) both, I felt the Garden had to go and think Fenway should too. I just hope that they do a better job replacing Fenway than they did with the Garden. A Skidmark/canofsoup15 production.Red Sox Nation

It may not be the top of the line facility But calling it a dump is an asinine comment. You may not like the Yankees but you cant say jack about the stadium. Its still very beautiful. and BTW we don't call Shea a dump because the Mets play there. Most Yankees fans say they love Fenway. We all say it may not be in the best shape but its still a beautiful park We call Shea a dump beacuse.... well IT IS. Don't go knocking Yankee stadium because your park is a dump

Yankee stadium itself is alright, but the surrounding area sucks. unless you like your stroll from the car past the jail. i don't feel safe around there in my locked car, yet walking the streets. i fear breaking down on the Cross Bronx.

The neighborhood may not be great but it's not as bad as people make it out to be. I've been going for way to long and have never had a problem. And as far as parking and traffic go, if you go to enough games you should know the back routes/short cuts and tricks to going to Yankee stadium. You don't always have to sit in traffic.

What's the big deal about walking past a jail? They're all locked inside?

maybe i'm in the area to much when games aren't being played. in fact, thats usually the only time i'm around. i'd rather watch games on TV then spend the money going to the games. there aren't hundreds of cops around when the Yankees aren't playing. i don't care what you say, the area sucks.

quote: I really defy anybody to call Yankee Stadium a dump.....Don't go knocking Yankee stadium because your park is a dump

Even if Yankees didn’t play there, it’s still a dump. It’s drab, pre-Depression era construction. The concourses are too narrow. The restrooms are too small. The upper level seats are nearly impossible to get in and out of. The ramps to the upper level are too steep. Some of these things are why Shea is a dump too. Shea also has some of the lousiest seats I’ve ever sat in.

I like Fenway Park but I’ll go so far as to call that a dump too. Sure, it has plenty of charm but aside from the narrow concourses and small bathrooms, the old wooden seats behind the steel columns are too narrow and the rows are too close together. Plus the steel columns themselves interfere with the sight lines. I’d probably call Wrigley Field a dump too but I haven’t been there yet.

Tiger Stadium, Comiskey Park and Cleveland Municipal Stadium all got torn down because they were from the same era of shitty old ballparks. If the Yankees didn’t have the history that they did, the stadium would have been landfill long ago.

I’m looking forward to seeing a lot more games at the new stadium than I do now at the current stadium.

Besides, they never had to close Shea Stadium because a beam fell from the mezzanine onto the lower level seats.
