So I'm listening to the radio, and they happen to mention that Darryl Strawberry will be eligible for induction either next year or the year after. This begs the question, should Darryl be inducted or do his off-the-field problems outweigh any accomplishments hes had on the field?

Even if you forgot all of his off-the-field problems, he didn't have a good enough career to get in the hall.

I agree with HBox. Drug problems aside, his numbers (http://www.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/stats_historical/mlb_player_locator_results.jsp?playerLocator=straw berry) are not Hall of Fame material. I believe he was a great player, with a streak of quality seasons, but as far as longevity and consistency for the Hall of Fame, the numbers just aren't there.

Just for comparison:

Strawberry: 17y, 1583 G, 5418 ABs, 898 R, 1401 H, 256 Dbl, 335 HR, 1000 RBI, 1352 Ks, .259 Avg

Mattingly: 14y, 1785 G, 7003 ABs, 1007 R, 2153 H, 442 Dbl, 222 HR, 1099 RBI, 444 Ks, .307 Avg,
plus...
9 Gold Gloves
1984: AL Batting Champ (top five '85-'87)
1985: AL MVP (top ten '84-'87)
1986: Led MLB in Sluggin % (2nd: '84 & '85)
1984 & '86: Led League in Hits (2nd: 1985)
1985 & '86: Led Leaue in Total Bases (4th: '84 & '89, 6th: '87)
1984-86: Led League in Doubles (3rd: '87 & '92)
1985: Led League in RBI (5th: '84 & '87, 3rd: '86, 2nd: '89)

...and I don't think either of them have a chance in hell. Straw shouldn't even be a consideration, at least Donnie has the additional defense to make an argument for.

Neither Mattingly or Strawberry should be in the Hall of Fame. I'm sorry, but being a decent baseball player in who happened to wear a New York uniform isn't enough.
