I have a question...ok I first became a baseball fan as well as a yankee fan in 1996...which just so happened to be the world series year...now I was only 10 at the time so I didn't really have an understanding of all of that bandwagon stuff I just knew they were a team in my area that I became a fan of....so does that make me a frontrunner?

I may go to Rider but I'll always be Marist Mike. Maria Sharapova is the future mother of my children.

Not at all. I was going to say if you are even asking that question, yes. But no, you are from the new York area and in no way rooting for the home team is it becoming a frontrunner. Becoming a frontrunner woul dbe if you are from Cincinnatti and rooting for the Yanks the one year and then you see how good the Angels have become the next year and rooting for them. I know people like that. Like Dallas fans here int he Philadelphia area. Then again, the Eagles were never on back in the day and the Cowboys were shoved down our throats on Sundays. Hence the America's Team moniker. Now if you are from say, Oklahoma and have no team and you get WGN or WTBS, it is completely in your rights to become a fan of either team cause they are on national networks and you really have no other team to root for. it is all a part of my sports commandments which i am going to get around to writing one of these days. I am conversly the opposite of the frontrunner. I pick a bad team and root for them just out of pity. I became a Bucs fan in 1982 (due to my Dallas haterd) and a Bengals fan back in 93 cause they were just so horrible. Same thing goes with the Indians back in 88 and the Tigers in 97. All those teams eventually and are eventually becoming good. I don't feel really too bad about that because I am not turning on my home team fandom.

It could just be good timing. I lived in Oakland from 87-91. They won 3 straight AL crowns and 1 World Series.

if you're from queens and you're not a met fan then yes you are a front runner.
and being 10 is not an excuse, unless you have an older brother and you root against him simply for spite.

most fans i know have their minds made up before they turn 10.

this you can say for the majority of yankee fans. i became a met fan in 84, from 84 to about 95 i couldnt FIND a yankee fan. ask most yankee fans who was the ss before derek jeter and most will stare at you blankly. however i will give you a pass if you just didnt follow any team pre-1996.

I've always been a Yankee fan. They're the only team I ever liked. I remember watching games in the early 90's and only remembering Don Mattingly's name, but I was only 6 or 7, so that was normal. I have a bunch of pictures of me very little with yankees hats on and watching the games.
As for you being a frontrunner, it depends on when you started watching the Yankees that year.

Thanks COS
YANKEES FAN SINCE BIRTH!
Not a frontrunner
Still though, there is no excuse since you have the Mets to root for.

See, that was something I had always wondered about. How are the lines divided. I know it was a bit more defined back in the day when the Giants had Manhattan, Brooklyn had the Dodgers and the Bronx had the Yankees but even then weren't there fans crossing lines and being divided? I didn't know it was broken down into such a deep territorial thing. How about when a team moves? We still have A's fans here in Philly and they have been gone for about 50 years now. There are still some stragglers from the days of Connie Mack though. I love the hitorical society that is down in Hatboro, PA. Really cool place to go and just jog the memory of some true old timers.
