There are some that would argue the slide started with "Metallica". Then again, you can also find people who would argue that they sold out after "Kill 'Em All" and every album since. Personally, I think "Load" kinda marks the start of the decline, although there were some decent songs on it. Never the less, "Master of Puppets" is and will always be a masterpiece and one of the all-time great albums ever produced. In fact, I was listening to it just last night.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I consider Type O Negative more hardcore than metal because of the band's roots.
That's the same reason I didn't put Into Another on my list.

And Sepultura, really?
The first album was great, but I never heard anything worth listening to from them after that. If you're talking greatest Metal Albums (next thread, anyone) I'm with you, but I don't see them pulling enough weight to be on a greatest Metal Band of all time list. Then again, it's not my list, so you can put whoever you want on it.

I think that's the thing about Type O, they've changed so much, that I consider them Heavy Metal almost by default. I can't consider them Hardcore because Hardcore now is a completely different animal than it was in the early 90's, and they're not "dancy" enough to be Goth.

Scepultura just stayed in my mind as being part of the metal scene, I think they'll be remembered, but only for the stuff with Max.

maybe hardcorish for the first two albums.

I hear you. I know they went in a more goth direction, but I never really listened top them past the Slow, Deep & Hard, so I guess I'm the wrong person to comment. Plus, when I say roots, I'm talking about what they were doing before the band too. Carnivore was about as brutal a hardcore band as there was (with metal tendencies obviously, but hardcore nonetheless).

Hardcore now is a completely different animal than it was in the early 90's

I'm an old man. My best definition of hardcore is thicker punk rock. Fuck a Mudvayne. They're bad metal, not hardcore.

Mudvayne isn't much of anything. I remember bands like For The Love of and Indecision being hardcore (and I only know that from friends being into them) I'm not sure if bands like "Atreu", "Every Time I die", "Lamb of God" and "Poison The Well" are "today's" hardcore, all I know is I switch them off after 2 seconds. maybe I'm getting old

My Ronnie James! Where do you people come from?

And Sepultura, really?
The first album was great, but I never heard anything worth listening to from them after that.

You mean the first album Beastial Devastation? That was PURE scheit! I have it yes, but because I only got it AFTER hearing the masterpiece Beneath The Remains. Their second album Schizophrenia was such a step up and you could really tell they were getting their chops then. I can understand a bit how you may say how Arise and Chaos AD may not have been worth listening to but Beneath The Remains set such a standard for them anything else would have been impossible to reach those levels.

I'm not sure if bands like "Atreu", "Every Time I die", "Lamb of God" and "Poison The Well" are "today's" hardcore

Nah, Jerry, those are "screamo" bands...basically kids who think that since they listened to too much Refused and Sunny Day Real Estate at the same time, they can make good music.

Nice way to give some proper respect to Refused there Mojo. Clearly a top notch band that "Atreyu", "Every Time I Die" and "Poison The Well" did indeed grab some influence off of.

Lamb Of God needs to be nowhere NEAR the screamo moniker as they are clearly metal. Hey, I don't want to get into labels and arguments here but the guys in the band have even stated that the only reason they started Burn The Priest was because they didn't hear any good metal out there circa 1996 roughly. They played in their garage together, played some shows out around Richmond and then got discovered, Steve Austin produced the first record, Prosthetic picked them up, Metal Blade distributed and so on and so on. I just hope they don't fuck it up by getting too popular.

My Top 10 Metal bands though I would have to say in no particular fucking order either:

Black Sabbath
Carcass
Death
Diamond Head
Exodus
Hellhammer/Celtic Frost
Judas Priest
Motorhead
Slayer
Van Halen

I can give some reasons for each one and how there are some obvious deletions as Metallica, Pantera and Sepultura. KISS, AC/DC and Guns N Roses I feel don't really fall under the pure metal umbrella. I find them more Hard Rock with a metal influence but then again labels are quite gay and I sound like a real gay now so speaking of which, here is my top:

I call it Hefty.

http://arts.ucsc.edu:16080/faculty/eanderson/stufff/CamsCD/book/guys/chubs/fat%20torso%203.jpg

Sunny Day Real Estate was great.

Because i was clouded by metal for so long, I was naturally ignorant to every other kind of music cause it wasn't metal. This is truly one of the bands I hopped onto a bit too late and man do I regret it. Maybe thats why I have been playing catch up for the last 8 years or so. I missed Jawbreaker and Fuel. Man was Fuel fucking amazing. Jawbreaker too.

1. I love me some Primus (I just recently returned Frizzle Fry to its proper place of CD#3 in the disc changer in the car), but do you really consider them Metal? I consider them more of a Hard Rock (1 slight shade heavier than Rock) & Funk mix, but that's just me.
2. If you have to ditch someone to let Primus in, you can't let it be Tom & the boys. Slayer is by far the best band on your list. They've been amazing for over 20 years. They deserve more respect than you're offering to the likes of Life of Agony.

Metal sucks.

Well, thats fair enough, but maybe step back and take a look bacj from the time of the Sun Sessions...

If we're gonna talk about Heavy meatl and Rock, we're going to talk about a lot of very loud music, a sonic assault, sometimes a bad pastiche of different genres, shallow lyrics, an adolescent attitude, etc...

And this is exactly and precisely how rock and roll was described; ditto with many blues and jazz acts. Just gutteral, disgusting, tuneless shit.

There was a time when Woody Allen in a bright suit, or Bob Newhart, or the Smother Brothers were the edgiest, hang it over the cutting-edge comedy of the Day.

Hell, when Amadeus wrote some shit, you saw the movie, I hope. There have been riots at the premieres of Symphonies. Music hs always been controversial. That way it stays in motion and Alive.

What can I say I'm biased, me and Eddie Trunk share the first concert, we were both at KISS, December 1977 with Piper, faeturing guitarist Billy Suire. And it fucking rocked.

Dave Davies mutilated his amp and created that fantastic disortion sound--this was before Satisfaction, before My Generation, before Iron Man (i've actually done a bit of internet searching and found arugments about earlier songs with distortion, blues artists etc...). Distortion is a little bit important in heavy metal, don't you think?

Also, You Really Got Me was Heavy Metal enough for Van Halen.
