In a world where money is the only real thing that matters, the government has basically authorized any company out there to re-edit films for sex, violence and profanity. I smell conspiracy. "Family Movie Act" my ass...."government", "family", "movie", and "act" are just words that mean "hey guess what, we're going to allow big corporations with likeminded conservative interests to tell you what you can and cannot watch"...
Scary folks. Run to Canada while you can still watch Pulp Fiction and hear the words motherfucker instead of "mothersweetlollipops"!

Yeah this is certainly a step in the wrong direction, but I wouldn't go pulling the "Canada Alarm" yet. And if I was a filmmaker I would be royally pissed that people are allowed to fuck with my shit, although the networks have been doing it for years, but with the artists permission I would assume at least in some cases.
It's not as though all films have to be sent through these companies filters before they get to us though. We're still able to see the original artists' vision. At least after it gets through the production companies' filter, but that's another story and has been ging on as long as there's been film studios.
I see it as more of an artists rights than a censorship issue. Like I said, it's not as if the government is blocking the original versions from being seen; it's not the government directly censoring stuff. I can appreciate parents needing that kind of edited content, like I said the networks have been doing it forever. Can you get pissed at an ISP for allowing parents to blosk porno email? That could be argued as a freedom of speech thing as well. It's a fuzzy area, and getting fuzzier.
Of course there are gonna be people who say that these companies are an extension of this conservative administration, and I don't really think it's true. I think this type of operation would be allowed under any government.
Edit: Okay now I read the article, and I'm down on this a lot more. I'm not against allowing these companies to do this, but it really should be licensed by the owners of the copyrights. This company should not be allowed to just go out and re-edit these films and sell them for profit. That's just not right. I don't know why the production companies wouldn't allow them, I think it's kind of a douchebag move not to, but it is their intellectual property and they do have their rights to how it's distributed.

I'd be more scared if the government told these companies that they couldn't do it. If you don't like it, don't buy Clearplay

But Dragon, you can't just allow people to edit and re-distribute other peoples' work. What if a liberal group wanted to distribute tapes of, let's just say hypothetically, Rush Limbaugh's show but edit out all negative references to Democratic politicians. Besides cutting the time of each show down like a thousand percent, if he didn't want them to do it, they shouldn't be allowed to do it. It's kind of like a reverse Political Correctness argument.
It really comes down to broadcaster and/or artist responsibility. Should filmmakers and production companies provide edited versions of their product for family viewing? Yes, I would say it's a douchebag move not to. But if they don't want to, you can't either a: make them, or b: just let someone else do it and profit from it. It's not right, and could be potentially dangerous.
If the artists were saying that they didn't want individuals editing their material on their home PC for their own private use. I would say fuck the artist, but this just doesn't fly with me.
"hey guess what, we're going to allow big corporations with likeminded conservative interests to tell you what you can and cannot watch"...
Let's not get crazy here, Jeff. I doubt this ClearPlay outfit comes anywhere near the size of any of the Hollywood studios, let alone them all combined. Crying "Big Brother!!" might be a tad alarmist at this early juncture. Being against this because it's a violation of the artists' rights is one thing, trying to claim government censorship is another. They're not outright preventing the distribution of the 'offensive' material, not yet anyway.

These are good points, but if someone has chosen to purchase a Clearplay, then they obviously are only interested in the "clean" version of the movie and are entitled to that. As long as Clearplay advertises the fact on their products, they should be allowed to dub Yankee Doodle over the whole film if they want to. It's the consumer's option to but that product.

ClearPlay don't own the rights to the films. If they did, there would be no argument, they really could dub "Yankee Doodle" over the whole thing. But if the owners of the rights don't want ClearPlay to edit their property, then ClearPlay shouldn't be able to.

Seems to me I remember Blockbuster sold only Tamed-down versions of some films, I remember 'Requiem for a Dream' had some of the 'ass-to-ass' scene cut out, and I think American Pie was cut too; so if yer a Big enough Company...
Was it just Blockbuster, or were the studios doing it for Blockbuster? Anyone? Beuller?

I just like the government telling artists "Hey...if you're work has selacious material in it, we will allow people to edit that out, and there's nothing you can legally do about it...because profanity is wrong and hurts our children. (Which is horseshit, profanity, sex, and violence are means to an end, should in case we ever decide to overthrow this idiotic government, it will be our passions that drive us to do it...passions found through sex, violence, and the rebellious, anti-societal nature of profanity". It's all just another control. Keep the population calm and passion-less and you will be better able to control them. You don't want people watching art portraying fucking or violence! No sir! And cursing...jesus...what dark road could that lead us down...)

I still don't see the other side of this arument.
Walmart has been selling CDs with edited artwork and without explicit content for years. That's fine with me. I just don't buy my CDs from Walmart. I try really hard not to buy Anything from Walmart.
I sorta see BJ's side of the argument.

Local video store chain here in Washington, "Erols," back in the 1980s used to edit their films. Eventually Blockbuster bought them out, and I heard the rumors too.
Side note - Erols eventually became an Internet Service Provider, and then sold THAT out to "Starpower."

That's it, now I'm going to take the Ten Commandments and turn it into an ultra-violent porn film. And, yes, Passion of the Christ jokes are more than welcome.
Now, that's fucked up, but the government shouldn't stop you from doing that. If you do it, I'll but you good.
It's all just another control.
Control is when the government steps in and says you can't do something. This is freedom for the public to watch a movie in a manner they see fit. If someone wants to make a DVD player that dubs "Dark Side of the Moon" into the Wizard of Oz for you, then I say they should be allowed to. And if you want to see the real version, go out and buy one that doesn't dub over movies. Movies with excellent sound quality like U-571 and Pearl Harbor (which won Oscars for sound) are meant to be heard in surround sound, but I don't want the ATF busting heads if someone uses old speakers to watch them.

You guys aren't understanding this...
The tamed down versions of DVD's and CD's you buy in Walmart are provided by the distributor of the uncensored version, ie the copyright holder. WalMart doesn't edit the material, it supplies a list of criteria the distributor must meet in order for thier material to be sold in WalMart's stores.
What this basically says is if Walmart now so wishes to do so, it could take the material and edit it itself and sell versions without having to ask the copyright holder for approval. It's not right. The artist/copyright holder should have the final say as to what is cut or not.
This legislation basically gives ClearPlay to re-edit the material without the artist's consent. THEY have editorial power. The creative gives way to the might of conservative hubris.
That's my problem with it.

I can't imagine this'll hold up in court. It pretty clearly violates most copyright and intellectual property laws. That's assuming it even passes the House or Senate.
The point is that the people who made the movie have legal ownership of it. There are laws in place specifically to firmly establish that. Clearplay should need to get permission to alter the work.
Anyone is free to make their own nice, clean movie. Anyone is not free to make their own versions of Kill Bill or Goodfellas.

It's your life.
How do you like it so far?
This is the kind of stuff our intellectual property laws are made to stop. But these idiots in Congress will happily pass bills like this, and then the next day start introducing bills that piss all over fair use. So I can edit a movie and sell it and make money off it, and that's legal, but making a copy of a DVD for my own personal use is illegal? I hate these people.
