View Full Version : For all the wrong reasons?
When One is Enough (http://www.nytimes.com/2004/07/18/magazine/18LIVES.html?ex=1247889600&en=f4176027eece64e3&ei=5090&partner=rssuserland)
This article was in the New York Times magazine this weekend. I personally think it was disgusting. I know others will feel differently, and probably bash me for saying that. But, I'm sorry, that's just how I feel. I can't even put into words how I feel about this woman.
Having felt physically fine up to this point, I got on the subway afterward, and all of a sudden, I felt ill. I didn't want to eat anything. What I was going through seemed like a very unnatural experience. On the subway, Peter asked, ''Shouldn't we consider having triplets?'' And I had this adverse reaction: ''This is why they say it's the woman's choice, because you think I could just carry triplets. That's easy for you to say, but I'd have to give up my life.'' Not only would I have to be on bed rest at 20 weeks, I wouldn't be able to fly after 15. I was already at eight weeks. When I found out about the triplets, I felt like: It's not the back of a pickup at 16, but now I'm going to have to move to Staten Island. I'll never leave my house because I'll have to care for these children. I'll have to start shopping only at Costco and buying big jars of mayonnaise. Even in my moments of thinking about having three, I don't think that deep down I was ever considering it.

Wow... I think that people should have the right to abort their children but I think this lady let one LIVE was just really scary. Imagine how this kid would feel knowing that two of his brothers/sisters were killed indirectly by his parents.
Christ, this is just wrong.

This actually disgusts me. To kill two fetuses and let one live is unheard of. Why exactly did they not get married yet decide it was OK to have a baby? She seems to be a very selfish person to me. If not being married was the issue because of lack of finance to care for three children, then why the hell did these two not join together and raise all three kids? This is definately a question of ethics.

Eh, doesn't bother me. I wouldn't want to deal with triplets.

this 72 year old ex marine i worked with said his grandma told him she gave herself 7 abortions and that she just loved to have sex...
boy, that never gets old...
i could hear it now:
grandma - "let me tell ya a story Jim(ex marines name)
Jim - "what's that grandma"
Grandma - "do you know i gave myself 7 abortions and i just loved to have sex"
Jim - "huh"
Grandma - "now eat your eggs before they get cold"

I looked at Peter and asked the doctor: ''Is it possible to get rid of one of them? Or two of them?''
ughh.. quite a catch, Peter

i think this might go a little beyond being considered "indirectly". they did everything but insert the needle themselves. Didn't these people ever consider adoption??? I understand how emotional and how much money it would cost, but there are always other options. this is something that i could never do. don't get me wrong, i'm all for a woman's right to choose. but to use that option, just because she didn't want to inconvience her life. is just sick.

Creepy, but I defend her right to do it.
In theory, it's no different than any "regular" abortion of a single fetus. A little weird, no doubt, but it's the same concept. If a woman thinks she's incapable of caregiving (be it for 1 child, or 2 out of 3), terminating a pregnancy isn't the most irresponsible thing to do.
BTW -
The doctor came in, and then Peter was asked to leave. I said, ''Can Peter stay?'' The doctor said no.
That seems a bit weird to me. I'm surprised he wasn't allowed to be there for a procedure involving his pregnancy. While he wasn't the gestational "home" that the mother was, the pregnancy was still partially his.

She probably likes "Sophie's Choice" for all the wrong reasons, too.
And while this is one of the most awful things I've ever heard, hey, it's her choice. Definitely not the one I would choose myself, but what place do I have dictating anything in this case?

This is called "selective reduction" and is performed quite frequently when women take fertility drugs and end up pregnant with quads/quints, etc. Most of the time it is done for the safety of the woman and the surviving fetus. After twins, the risk of carrying a multiples pregnancy is very very high. This should be the woman's choice, although, reading this article her reasons do seem selfish.

I don't think she should have published her situation for all to read, because all this does is stir up a stew that no one can agree on.
But when it comes to the safety of the woman and anything else that has to do with HER body, it is her choice.

(In the womb)
Baby #1: So who do you think goes?
Baby #2: I say Wilbert.
Baby #3(wilbert): Fuck you Frederick.
Baby #1: Maybe she was just messin' with us fella's. She wouldn't do this, right?
Doctor: Ok, we're ready to start the procedure.
Baby #'s 1, 2, 3: Ok. Rock paper scissors to see who goes!
