The next person who says something about religion and war like, "How much blood has been spilled in the name of God?" is going to be mocked and ridiculed by me to no end. I have had enough of this pseudo-intellectual, cliche, religion bashing. Don't get me wrong, there are problems with religion, but the whole war argument is just plain stupid.
Religion is not the cause of war. Human arrogance is the cause of war. All of it; every war, battle, skirmish, and conflict in human history boils down to 'our group' is better than 'their group', our beliefs are truer than their beliefs, we're more entitled to their land, natural resources, wealth, etc. than they are. The problem is that religion happens to be an effective tool to tap into the darker side of human nature. But it is certainly not the only one. By the logic of 'religion causes war', if there were no religion there would be no war. Let's take a look:
The Civil War, the bloodiest conflict in US history - no religious motivation whatsoever.
WWI - Nothing to do with religion.
WWII - Nothing to do with religion.
They were both because the Germans are fucking insane. In fact I'm really having trouble thinking of any conflict whatsoever, with the exception of maybe the Crusades and they ended 800 years ago, that could have been avoided if religion didn't exist.
Religion is and has been the single most important institution in the establishment and maintaining of human civilization. Are some religions outdated? Absolutely, most of the major ones actually. Are they too slow to change and adapt to the times? Yes. Do they cause wars? A resounding NO!
