View Full Version : Terror In The Sky

I had heard about "dry runs" from someone I know who works for the government. The press hasn't picked up on them much, most likely because of the panic it could cause and let's just look at the nightly newscasts - they can be downright scary.
Recently I have heard from numerous people - more often than usual - about the lack of security at airports. Just last week on the ABC show "NYPD 24-7", they had cops complaining about how middle eastern men could by one way tickets to NYC from Florida with cash.
Now, the following article came to my attention, and apparently the main stream press is picking up on it, but not quickly enough in my opinion.
Anyway, it is a long read, but extremely eye-opening first person account about seeing one of these "dry-runs" on a Northwest flight from Detroit to LA on June 29th.
Suspicion may cloud some judgments, but what happened here looks to me like a true taste of what is to come.

Part II is about the feedback the piece generated, and it generated a lot.

Very interesting. It made me feel a bit scared but then the fact that the FBI was on it made me feel better so I basically broke even. I'm glad that the attendants, and the captain knew about it, and that there was a federal marshal on board. Also the fact that once the plane landed the government was on it. The fact that these 14 men could get on pretty much unchecked is a big problem and that definitely needs to be changed. However, I do know how easy it would be to smuggle gun powder or other things needed for a bomb on a plane, I know you can take natural things and make small firework bombs and such, but as for a real bomb, does anyone know if you could make that totally out of inconspicious materials?

Scary Shit.
That's a fine story that affirms why I love the world, but hate the people that live on it. People are creeps.

Man, these days, ANYONE buying a one-way ticket should get the works when it comes to security screening. That should be an automatic red-flag.

It's harder today than it was on 9/11/01, but it's still do-able. you just have to know the system.
And as for Improvised explosive devices, the components are easy enough to get through. it's the actual explosive that's the problem. bags are randomly taken and subjected to an ETD (Explosive trace detection) that detects even the most minute trace of nitrate, simtex, etc...

I flew out of Trenton, NJ airport to Bedford, MA, and they actually let me on the plane without a ticket. My company never even got billed for it. Great security there.
On the way back myself and the other admin I was travelling with did get a random security search because we had a one way ticket back to Jersey.

did they screen you?
I hope this article help the shed some light on the trouble law enforcement has when it comes to this. We can't profile, so how do you stop these guys from flying? There's no law against flying, so how can you keep a group of people off of planes without the ACLU from jumping in? There is a no-fly list, a list that prevents certain known terrorists from boarding a plane, but people are battling that too.
there's no easy answer. All I can say is that things are much better than there were before. not as good as they could be in my opinion, but that's a seperate issue.

You know, it's pretty easy to put two and two together. A man with a McDonalds bag, along with his friends, spends a lot of time in the bathroom? Come on. Connect the dots here people.

There are more dots here than just a man with a bag...
Suddenly, seven of the men stood up -- in unison -- and walked to the front and back lavatories. One by one, they went into the two lavatories, each spending about four minutes inside. Right in front of us, two men stood up against the emergency exit door, waiting for the lavatory to become available.

It was a joke.
On a serious note, I think someone was suffering from an overactive imagination. This sounds exactly like the kind of story I'd hear from my crazy aunt. This story plays out exactly how it would if you were imagining a story like this, but how likely is it that flight attendants and air security officials are giving out private passenger information to random passengers on the basis of suspicious bathroom vists?

Who is the comedian [carlin?] who says he always brings a bomb on board, because what could the chances be of there being TWO bombs on a single flight?

Within a few hours I received a call from Dave Adams, the Federal Air Marshal Services (FAM) Head of Public Affairs. Adams told me what he knew:
There were 14 Syrians on NWA flight #327. They were questioned at length by FAM, the FBI and the TSA upon landing in Los Angeles. The 14 Syrians had been hired as musicians to play at a casino in the desert. Adams said they were "scrubbed." None had arrest records (in America, I presume), none showed up on the FBI's "no fly" list or the FBI's Most Wanted Terrorists List. The men checked out and they were let go. According to Adams, the 14 men traveled on Northwest Airlines flight #327 using one-way tickets. Two days later they were scheduled to fly back on jetBlue from Long Beach, California to New York -- also using one-way tickets.
...
So the question is... Do I think these men were musicians? I'll let you decide. But I wonder, if 19 terrorists can learn to fly airplanes into buildings, couldn't 14 terrorists learn to play instruments?
All that just to learn that some woman hates Arabs? I want my money back!!!!1

You should have linked the article that picture is from, Furie. It's more frightening than the original piece.

Well, considering I posted the original article, I feel I have to make reprimands here. After reading the original article, I felt what happened was a dry run. Having heard about dry runs from people in the know, I felt everyone should know that this is going on. Without waiting to hear confirmation, which I usually do, I fell into the state of fear and believed it.
Here's another article on what happened:

Even if the story didn't turn out to be accurate, why do airplanes allow us to carry ANYTHING on the fucking plane! Seriously! NO fucking carry-ons! People can live without their little portable hair-dryers or gameboys for four fucking hours! I honestly think we should only be allowed to board a plane carrying absolutely NO bags and NOTHING in our pockets!! Shit! I'll watch the in-flight movie and read the Highlights magazine they hand out proudly in order to feel safer!!
(ok, ok, this whole post was really made just to confess that I still read Highlights)

This dumb bitch was right. The Air Marshalls were very concerned with a passenger causing a disturbance on this flight! (http://www.kfi640.com/ericleonard.html)

Now if that were the real story she would have been in real danger of coming off that plane covered in coffee, tea and man milk.

I'm not saying they shouldn't have been questioned, but 14 Arabs flying out of the largest Arab-populated area outside the Middle East doesn't exactly have me shaking in my boots.

i suggested this once. it wasn't well received. Lobbyists for the airline industry have TSA and FAA by the balls. Security and Customer Service are in inverse ratio to eachother. Look at El Al and Tower.
