View Full Version : Will Compasses Point South?

We have talked about this on the board a few times. NYT has an article about how this is progressing. The Earth's magnetic field is only 1/10 of what it was 150 years ago, making scientists believe that a shift is coming.

A reversal could knock out power grids, hurt astronauts and satellites, widen atmospheric ozone holes, send polar auroras flashing to the equator and confuse birds, fish and migratory animals that rely on the steadiness of the magnetic field as a navigation aid

Yeah but how fucking cool; we'll be in the southern hemisphere. WooHooo!!! We can go North, to Antarctica!

[oh, and to answer your Q; compasses have, and always will, point south]

This was the wonderful title the NY Times chose to put on their page. I thought the same thing when I read it.

ahh Tuesday = Science Times. Coolness JPMick.

Yeah I always couldnt figure out why the thing pointing north also wasnt pointing south, coz its like a two-pointy thing, and its own pole; that why I make the big science bucks by knowing stuff like that and whats in cheez-wiz.

It would be a nice wake-up call; which Humanity Sorely Needs. I'm hoping for a Meteor, pacific impact, but this would do nicely, better even, coz the damage would be global.

And Godzilla is still sleeing in that Iceberg.

And what about The Blob?

It's those damn cartographers. They are biased towards the Northern Hemisphere. Of course, the vast majority of the population of Earth lives in the Northern Hemisphere, or at least used to (Indonesia and Brazil may have something to say about that). Have you ever seen a map where South is up? I saw a copule while in Australia, and they were pretty different. Barely recognizable.

Spring term is almost over, and I'm really hating my job. My lease on my apartment is amost run out. The tags on my car expire next week. If I'm ever going to do it, this just seems like a good time to kill myself..</center>

We can do that now. Granted, it is the long way.

Why? I understand the animals, but why would power grids be knocked out?

Because the magnets that are used to generate the electric in the generator would be backwards. The poles flip fairly often in geological time, but not since we have come into the modern age. They say it wont be an overnight thing anyway, but rather something that takes a few hundred years. Im not worrying about it.

Oh yes, the world's magnetism will be reversed... unless I receive one trillion dollars...

Reports vary, some saying it will be the 22nd. Nevertheless, only the Mayans know!

Shit. The world better not end on that day. It'll be my son's 9th birthday and I'm renting a moonbounce for the backyard.

I'm not sure about the magnets being reversed in the generators [does that mean theyre backwards in the southern hemisphere? different? I dont know]; but the power grid, in fact any length of wire on the planet will be affected:

Remember those Electro-Magnet experiements in science class?

-You move a wire through a magnetic field, it generates electricity; gets the elctrons sloshing through those wires. That's essentially all a generator, or an electric guitar pickup is: a magnet, producing a field, wires moving through said field [guitar = pick the note; generator = water moving the wires in the turbine] will generate electricity.

I think with the power stations, and all grid wiring; you move that magnetic field fast enough; it will produce God know what type of current, but there will be some; maybe miniscule, maybe enough to blow out everything. Or not; this is conjecture coz I'm blowing off assigned writing.

=

But I'm pretty sure it's about the movement of magnetic field affecting stationary electric fields; that's definately the deal with the aurora phenomena; with aurora its the electric particles from the sun moving past earths magnetic field giving us the lights; holy Shit if the magnetic poles started moving we might get, and these have been recorded; lit up sky bright enough to read by bright all night long for who knows how long.
