I have a netgear router rp114 that I have used before. But since I moved, I have lost the software for it. I went on the Netgear website to see if I could downlaod the software but all they have is a firmware download...Does anyone have any idea how I can replace this software (for free of course)....thanks

Routers do not require software. Maybe you are thinking of something else.

Are you sure??? I remember the router came with a disk and I had to load it before I could use it!

It was probably a disk to configure your computer. Its nothing you can not do manually. Unless it came bundled with something, like a wireless card, then the disk may have had those drivers on it.

Or you could bid on another one on eBay. This one here (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=62031&item=5709260682&rd=1) is going for a whopping .99› presently.

Plus it comes with that handy dandy cd.

ok...I recently bought a new computer just before my move...the other computer crapped out on me a few months back. So now I want to reconnect my router to the new computer and I get all the flashing lights and whistles but I can't connect to the internet through the router...just with the modem...I use cable by the way.

It has to do with the new computer, not to router. Unless the router is set to only allow computers with certain MAC address through (which i doubt), then it is a setting on your new PC.

Do you use Internet Explorer?

It might. try using it. If it does not connect right away, go to Tools Menu, then Internet options, Connections, then click Lan Settings and make sure the box "Automatically detect settings" is checked.

Also, from the star menu go to run and type cmd
once in DOS, type IPCONFIG

you should get an IP address starting with 192.168.???.???

that is a good thing if you do.

Just to add to this, if you're using Windows 2000 or XP look for Command Prompt in the Program Menu. This will also take you to DOS.

Arent you suppose to configure the router from a local IP address? Reeshinator, do you have the original box and/or instructions to the router? It might have some directions.

Google the router model and the phrase "default password"

It will tell you how to get to the config. page of your router. from there you can configure shit.

call tech support at the cable company. just tell them you changed your computer. they may tell you exactly what needs to be done, and maybe not but it's worth the short time you will spend...

you welcome!

just thought of a quickcheck:

make sure your modem is attached to the Wan port of the router and your pc's to the Lan ports. If there are extra Lan ports move the pc cable to a different port.

you would type 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 (these are usally the default, but you can google for more instructions) This will bring up a password box where you eneter than info. From there, you will be looking at the router config screen. This all may be in vain if it is the computer, but you cn try. Are you sure the NIC card is still good? and the cable?

another quickie:

if you have XP there's a 'fix network' thingy

i believe it's:

> right click on My Network Places and click on properties / OR double click on My Network Places
> right click on the Lan(?) icon and there's an option to REPAIR NETWORK... click it

this clear things up for me on a few occassions...

sounds like giving the cable company the call will get you some answers... i have Cablevision and they will not support the router but don't consider it illegal...

what you just stated should rule out the nic card and the cable...

Dont you wish you'd bid on that $1.25 router now? You'd be 1/2 way towards solving your problem.
