View Full Version : Anchorman - Funniest Movie of the year

Just saw it last night. Not going to spoil, but it was awesome. This is coming from a guy who didn't like Old School...
So yeah, it was great. However, there was a few things I noticed... There was a LOT of stuff in the commercials that wasn't in the actual movie.
1) Ron's "It's Jazz Baby!" line.
2) Ron yelling to Veronica "Let's make a baby!" as they crash through the table
3) Ron talking to Garth at the party.
4) Ron looking at his own billboard and saying, "Who's that handsome devil?"
It's almost like they have hours upon hours of extra footage...

I saw this last night. I thought it was funny, but not Old School or Elf funny.
My favorite part of the movie was when they went to Pleasure Town.
And maybe it was just the movie, but age seems to have caught up on Christina Applegate and kicked her ass.

This is the first movie i have ever walked out on, I bailed just after Ron took Victoria to pleasure town, I love Old school and think will ferrel is hillarious, his recent apperence on Late nite with Conan obrein was classic, but this was awful

Anchorman was hilarious: "IT SMELLS LIKE BIGFOOT'S DICK!" will, hopefully become a new catchphrase.
PS:
BASEketball is one of the all-time greats. Especially the scene when they visit the dying kid in the hospital.

BASEketball is funny, but as a movie, it sucks. its like zoolander, but funny at times
old school is funny all the time, maybe its just me.
in any event, will ferrall is hard to read. movies like old school and jay and silent bob and celebrity jeop skits make him awesome, but zoolander and a few other questionable roles make him suck
and if anyone tries to say zoolander is a good movie, throw out your tv, cause you obviously dont use it

Zoolander was funny for what it was, and what it was making fun of.
It all depends on his role, Ferrel wasn't funny at the MTV movie awards, i dont think....ever. Maybe that's just because he doen't have the kinda freedom on cable TV that he does in movies. Whatever.
I thought, and still think Anchorman is his official jumping of the shark but i won't know until i see it, which will most likely be sometime over the next year because i never go to the movies.

Review: Anchorman; The Legend of Ron Burgundy
The 70's were so way cool. Pool parties and tumblers of scotch and hot easy sex with strangers. None of that cable with 500 channels. At 6pm every night we got the local news by some deep voiced dude with a blazer and a pocket patch with the cannel logo on it. "Anchorman" is about the lost art of being a pretentious asswipe load, and nobody does it better than Ron Burgundy, San Diego's top news jock. He thinks that San Diego is German for "a whales vagina" and wants to try a new fad called "jogging" between smoking a nail and gulping some scotch. His news team (all male) consist of Brian Fantana "man on the street" (Paul Rudd) who has a room full of cologne, Champ Kind (SNL's David Koechner is funny) is the "sports guy", and weather with Brick Tamland ("Daily Show's" Steve Carell steals the entire film) has a very low IQ...retarded. Veronica Corningstone (amazingly pretty Christina Applegate) joins the team to brighten up the scene, but the guys are outraged. Simple story but this is not a real story but a reason to get some top comic actors to do some killer improv.
Will Farrell has given America a funny kids movie called "Elf" for Christmas, "Anchorman" is as stupid and silly as things can get. I felt guilty for laughing at the dumbest things like a dog that can understand Spanish, and singing along with the cast doing "Afternoon Delight", The only problem was that I was the only one laughing in a full theater. This tells me that some of you won't like this movie but damn if it's right on the money for my taste. Farrell is perfect again (Elf was good but here he is on his game) saying shit like "Super Duper!" and "Fantastic" to everything. The guest stars are the usual crew from the new Rat Pack (Stiller, Robbins, Wilson, Vaughn and Black) and Fred Willard does a straight role (why overshadow Farrell, even though Willard created the same type character years ago).
Adam McKay directs this film well enough, and the script is full of wild and bizarre gags (a hard-on, a goofy interlude in a jazz club, a "Gangs of NY" showdown with rival News teams) but it's you're choice. Again I have to say that Steve Carell is maybe the funniest comic actor in years, watch for him. I was reminded of the way I felt when I saw "Ace Ventura" for the first time, unforgettably stupid! Super Duper!

...once it gets rolling, it rocks dah houze..BOYEEE..I'm Shurrr. Funny rework of "Some Like It Hot" meets "Bad Boys" with a touch of Paris Hilton...
So I don't know if Ancorman is really "Super Duper" or not. But at least he didn't start a new thread.

It was no where near Old School. It was stupid funny. It was like a really long Saturday Night Live skit. Waste of your money and time. "The movie you'll be quoting the rest of the summer" my ass.

I also just saw it last night, and I thought it was great. Weird, but great. There were so many scenes I was laughing at, and inside I was asking myself "why are you laughing at this?", but the point is, I was. I also loved basketball.
I also have to disagree with Jenn, not to be a brat, but I think Christina Applegate looked amazing in this movie. Everytime she was on the screen, I couldn't get over how pretty she looked.[

Wow this Really missed it.
When you have a great visual schtick that's Already Funny, take a Risk with some Jokes with some Meat, develop one or two for more then five seconds. Takes the low road each joke, that's easy, but less gooder.
Remember when movies like this still had a somewhat professional tone about them? Sheeesh Broadcast News had a more substantive backdrop to work with.
When movies drop Any pretense of seriousness, you take a HUGE risk. Airplane, the first, was screened to often dead silent audiences. They were hit with these bathroom jokes, and were like, ok, its bathroom jokes by b-list celebs. But for some reason it worked, and for each airplane there are 20 Shark Sandwiches out there; same concepts, same background, even some major players, A-list even, and it's Dead in the Water.

Are you out of your fucking mind?
A comedy opening at 28 million dollars, against a movie that just had a 180 million dollar opening weekend, in an over-saturated opening weekend against two other movies?
Just because it opened at #2 doesn't mean it "blows". Learn to analyze data there, chuckles.

So, by your logic, an overbloated shit blockbuster that opens huge with a #1 opening and a huge drop-off is a good movie? Personally, I never us a movie's box office as a barometer of whether a movie is any good. "Scooby Doo" opened huge last year.
Disregarding that, Tenbats is right. Considering that it was a comedy and where in the schedule it opened, and how much it did, the movie did very well.
[edit - and unless you have a huge budget movie, $28 million is a good opening]

To me it does... so what's your point?
"To me it does"... that's exactly my point, you're talking out of your ass.
Let's say Anchorman had a 28 million dollar opening, and this weekend it COMPLETELY fell off and only made 10 million or less, and it finished after a few weeks with 60 million dollars.
Considering the total cost of the movie is 40 million dollars, IT STILL MADE 20 MILLION DOLLARS BEFORE DVD SALES. To base Anchorman's perfomance as "blows" SOLELY by the opening weekend - when it performed VERY well - when you have no idea if it has "legs" or not even when it's projected to make a profit is absolutely moronic.
Remember, just because a movie doesn't break the "vaunted" 100 million dollar mark, IT CAN STILL BE AN EXTREMELY PROFITABLE MOVIE.
If your statement was, "According to the critics, Anchorman blows", there could be something tangible in that, even though its reviews were decent.
Anyway... nowadays shitty movies gross millions of dollars because of amount theaters charge for submission. So, that being said... 28 million is not a lot.
Dude, quit backpedalling. The cost of a movie ticket has nothing to do with this. Granted the American public had made a lot of shitty movies "hits", (the aforementioned Scooby Doo and Tomb Raider come to mind) but that has nothing to do with ticket prices, it's that the American public will sometimes watch really shitty movies. The difference between Scooby Doo and Tomb Raider and Anchorman is again, the reviews - Anchorman has been positively reviewed, the other two were roundly savaged.
The true test will be this weekend. If Anchorman has more than a 50 percent drop, then there might be some creedence to your statement. As of right now, keep your trap shut when you have NO IDEA what you're talking about.

Did you even read the data from this weekend, or read my post, or anything like that?
Or did you just see #4 and think "it's over?"
Let's take you to school so you can stop looking like a dumbass.
The numbers are the following:
I, Robot had the big opening of 52 million.
Followed by Spiderman 2 with 24 mil.
Number three was the Hillary Duff movie with 13.8 million
Number four was Anchorman with 13.4 million.
So the number three and four spots were separated by less than half a million dollars, which is BLEEDING EDGE when it comes to movie estimates.
Did you read what I said before? That if Anchorman made 60 million dollars, it would still turn a 20 million dollar profit.
It's going to make 60 million by mid-week.
I should point out that Dodgeball, an inferior comedy to Anchorman, had a very similar opening weekend a month ago and still made 100 million dollars.

That was my favorite to Jenn. "He punted my dog!!"
Again, got the bootleg because I can't stand wasting my money. It was pretty funny especially compared to some stuff this year, like 'Starsky & Hutch'....horrible.

"Bleeding edge?"
What does that even mean?
And Tenbats gets really crazy over the weirdest things. I hope he crunched those numbers while he was dressed up like an old-timey accountant.
Bleeding edge: I used the wrong term. C'est la vie.
I have low tolerance for stupidity. Especially when people have random comments talking out of their asses.
Or start threads and use four exclamation marks in a row in the title.

Anchorman was hilarious: "IT SMELLS LIKE BIGFOOT'S DICK!" will, hopefully become a new catchphrase.
AGREED! Along with "It smells like a burning turd with hair in it!"
I thought it was really funny. I love stupid funny and that's exactly what this was. The cameos were great too! I know I'm gettin' the DVD the day it comes out!

Then why are you defending "Anchorman" like a nut?

There's FUNNY stupidity (Anchorman)... which I like.
Then there's DUMB stupidity (Fairytale 9/11).

John Nash may be crazy, but John Nash got to fuck Jennifer Connelly. I'm down with that.

Thank god someone else agrees. Anchorman was RETARDED
One time some guy told me Anchorman wasn't funny. I killed him with a trident.

not only was it bad when it came out, but it is unwatchable now. it was a great cast in what turned out to be a horrible script and i guess bad direction. i have no idea how it turned bad, but the final product was terrible

For me, Anchorman got funnier over time. There are some classic scenes like the anchorman rumble and the scene where they sing Afternoon Delight.
60% of the time it works, every time.
That doesn't make sense.
I'm in a glass case of emotion!
I love lamp.
Will I see the sequel? Maybe. From Netflix.

First time I watched it, i had rented it on DVD. Stopped it halfway through, thought it was terrible.
Year later, caught it on HBO, found it funnier than I did the first time. Every time I caught it on cable it got better. Now I own it on Digital Video Disk and quote it at least every other day, top 10 comedy ever.
I think this is the all time 'grow on you' movie. I hated it and now i worship it and i've heard so many people say the same thing about it.

Putting Steve Carell and Will Farrel together makes sense because their names rhyme and they both play the same fucking part EVERY time.

Similar experience... I didn't care for it at all when I first saw it but one of my close friends is obsessed with it so I wound up seeing it again and I thought it was hysterical. It actually made me rethink a lot of these types of movies coming out... most of them are duds, and none of them are as good as Anchorman, but some of them have some redeeming qualities and quotable lines.
The "yazz flute" scene tickles me in a way I can't even describe.

First time I saw it, I nearly walked out of my hotel room where it was playing. I hated it, and then I saw it again and liked it. By the third or fourth time I saw it, it became oddly brilliant in an insanely stupid way. Now, I would love to see it again. I have it on dvd, but I haven't the patience to get up and open the case and put it in the player. Why can't it just be ON the tv already?

One of my all time comedy faves. ALL TIME. I really liked it when I saw it in the theater and then it just snowballed into being my favorite. I quoted that movie HEAVILY for entirely too long.
Every single line in that movie is a gem.
There's only ONE other movie like that for me: JOHNNY DANGEROUSLY.
