Traditionally corporations have donated millions of dollars to Republicans. But labor unions this year will donate between 500-700 million dollars to defeat George Bush. Even though I am non union, my question to union members is do you want a huge majority of your union dues to go to politics? Shouldnt most of your dues go to reserves for collective bargaining, or when you go on strike. Ive read that union members have a right to find out where their dues get allocated to. And if youre a union member and support the president, do you really want a large percentage of your dues going to the Kerry Edwards campaign?

it makes sense, Kerry is more of a union guy than Bush is.

I was in a union for a while. they did nothing for me but take my money.

You glossed over this. Would shareholders in companies who are Democrats be happy to have a company they own a part of financing their political enemies? No. But if we accept the assumption that corporations are better off with Republicans in charge and unions are better off with Democrats in charge, you just have to accept that each organization is acting in its own best interests.

So you DIDN'T have a problem with this practice when they were donating the money to Republicans?

Traditionally, since unions were formed in this country, Democrats have been more supportive of them than Republicans. They're just hedging their bets. Between these candidates, Kerry comes across like the best friend unions have ever seen.

This is a sad day, the day that I have to explain one of Yerdaddy's jokes. The best marathon runners in the world are Kenyans.

Director of the C.Y.A. Society.
Field Marshal of the K.I.S.S. Army
Poison Clan rocks the world

But if the best marathon runners are from Kenya, wouldn't they be less tired after all that running because they're in such great shape?

Actually, if you read his message, he merely states that before the money would go to Republicans, but now it's aimed at Democrats, and then offered a question:

"Even though I am non union, my question to union members is do you want a huge majority of your union dues to go to politics?"

Which was strictly nonpartisan, because it applies to BOTH Democrat & Republican union members.

If you are uncomfortable with your union dues being used towards something you don't agree with, look towards employment law, because in some instances the law actually allows you a limited right to do something else with that money - like, for example, instead of paying your dues to the union itself you can funnel it into a charity, etc.

Why the fuck doesn't that apply to me and my taxes?

And it's still a little curious that this apparently wasn't a concern when "traditionally" this money was going to Bush and the GOP, and it's something that has to be brought up NOW, and people have to be specifically asked if they want their money going to "people like" Kerry & Edwards.

I'm probably just paranoid.

Great article, Heckler.

I found out first hand that when I became a teacher I could either be a Member of the NEA and pay the dues, or, Not be a member of the NEA, but if one chooses that path they Still had to pay 85% of the total dues.

The NEA gives a shitload of money to support Politicians. I really dislike that. Two reasons, and they are mine, so take em as opinion:

-I dont want money going to Pols I don't support from my Union money. Ditto with Pols I DO support with my Union dues. I took math; I can add, and I can choose. If I wanna give somebody some money? I'll cut you a check.

If the NEA was That concerned with what their aim should be; to assure a 'thorough and efficient' education; give it to the schools, the kids; for some of the things they cant get money for.

And tenure is a really, really bad idea.

You are.

Because when I read his post, I didn't see anything that specifically disparaged Kerry-Edwards, only a basic question of whether you agree with your union money going to politicians - which can refer to Democrats OR Republicans (especially since, even today, I'm entirely positive that there ARE Republicans who DO receive contributions / funds from unions).

Freudian slip on your part? ;p If he had said, "I don't want my money going to Bush-Cheney!", would you be having the same problem with this?

Yeah I forgot about the AFT. Never knew a member.

See, it's sad about these unions coz, yeah weve all heard it before, the sweatshops and triangle shirt factory disasters, and This was going to be the answer to the little guy getting fucked. Like Sally Field in Norma Rae, for those like me who get all knowledge through movies.

I'm in NJ, and NJ teachers were the first in the nation to get a minimum salary: $18,500. Feel free to go off on your teachers have summers off and work only 6 hours a day. They also dont get paid summers, and if you believe the 6 hours a day thing; you never taught, or are that suck ass teacher who dies in the movie, um... Teachers?

Let's have a contest. With a Masters Degree and 6 years full-time experience on the guide, the salary guide for each district; let's see who can come closest to my Highest teachers salary ever, year 1998. It's public knowledge if you want to go find the school etc. but just for fun, feel free to guess, you wont insult me either way, but you may be surprised. I'll give you the last three numbers, so it's:

$__, 190.

Only doing this coz I was cleaning out old papers and found my Soc Sec thing where they show you your income each year.

Burp.

What HBox said, Se7en.

It's the internet, perception is a bitch, but that's how I took it, and am still taking it. Those words didn't just fall together at random the way they did. To me, there's a clear intent.

Personally, I'm all about massive campaign finance reform, and I don't think that much money should be going to ANY candidate from any one source, grouping, organization or business.
