View Full Version : Monitor Problems

I bought a new computer from Dell a little over a year ago. Since the monitor on my previous computer was still good, I didn't buy a new one and just hooked up the old one to the new machine. After a few weeks, I started having some minor problems with the monitor, in that the monitor wouldn't always come on when I started up the computer. There was a work around, in that it would usually start up the second or third time, and I really don't restart my computer that often, so I kept the old monitor.

Anyway, today, I moved the tower a little trying to connect my video camera to the firewire. The monitor went out. This happened once before, and I tightened the connections between the monitor and the computer and it worked fine. This time, nothing seems to work. Note that power goes to the monitor fine, and the picture tube isn't blown, because the monitor powers up just fine when not connected to the computer.

I'm pretty close to pitching the monitor and getting a new one unless someone has an idea on how to fix this. Any ideas?

Is this a flatscreen monitor?

I've read of problems with Dell flatscreen monitors.

I'm no Richy Rich, but some pretty good CRT monitors are under $100 now, and I'd just get a new one.

It is frustrating as Fuck though.

If you still have the drivers, maybe a complete unistall/reinstall, or search the web for driver updates; even though it doesnt sound driver related, but I'm actually faking this as I go along so...

Well not really but thats all I got;

I got NOTHING!

PS: You want a nice CRT? I got one collecting dust. Flat Screen and Everything baby, no Curvy Curves.

Also, have you tried swapping the monitor power cable for another one to see if that fixes it.

If it's a regular monitor, you may want to look at the pins in the plug to see that they're all lined up properly.

Another thing it might be, and this is a long shot, but the cable which connects from the monitor to the pc may be faulty.

It's not a flatscreen. I couldn't even tell you the brand/model. It's just this generic POS I had with my last computer that more or less served its purpose.

The more I think about it, it's time for an upgrade.

I am with reef on this one. Check the pins and make sure none are bent. But it could def. be the cable. Especially if at some point it was pulled very tight or twisted to much. You can try starting the comp in safe mode to see if it is a driver problem with Windows. or hook a laptop or second computer up to it to check it out.

Thanks all. I tried your suggestions, and it does appear to be a problem with the connection between the monitor and the computer. None of the pins are bent, but something's wrong. Unfortunately, one end of the connection is permanently attached to the back of the monitor, so there doesn't seem to be an easy fix.

I'm off to the store.

If I needed to get a monitor right now, I would still go CRT as opposed to a Flat Screen. Reason being clarity (and price as well). I have flat screens at work and my sister has one as well. To me, text is just not as sharp and a decent CRT.

My brother's pc has a flatscreen and the text as far as I've seen is clear, if not clearer than some standard CRTs that I've seen. I don't know if that is the cast with all of them. Plus the few that I've actually done some work on have always seemed pretty clear to me.

That plus the fact that they're nice and light and easy to move around makes them appealing to me.

Flat screens are garbage.

CRT is the way to go. You can get huge size for under 200 bucks. (19" available at Best Buy from Syncmaster at 180 bucks).

Sounds to me your tube might be going, or you are operating at a resolution your monitor can't handle. If it doesn't say a brand name on the front of your monitor, chuck it.

I also think the color of Flat Screens is off. Maybe it is just me. I do have shitty eye sight. But the text seems blurred. Unless you spend big bucks on the flat panel (over 1000) then the quality get better.

I have read more than a few times that gamers and video enthusiests do not like the flat panels due to poor response time and blurring of fast motion.

Picked up a $100 CRT 17" monitor. After installing it, and not having it work, I realized that the problem was with the connection between the monitor and the computer, but not the cord. In fact, the card in the computer where the cord connects had come loose, making it very difficult to make a good connection between the monitor and computer. I fiddled around with it for a bit and got it to work. I briefly contemplated returning the new monitor, but then realized, by comparison, that my old monitor really was a piece of shit.

Thanks for all of the help everyone! I really would like to see a tech forum on the board.

I have a flastscreen Sony monitor. It's as clear as the CRT it replaced. It takes up less room. It generates less heat. It's lighter to move around.

I'd stick with a flatscreen from now on.

Its also exponentially cheaper to run, espeically if you keep your computer on all day, If we do have a computer forum, I think Reef should be the Mod.

I bought a $600 flat screen and returned it for a 19" ViewSonic CRT. They suck for online gaming...tried playing Unreal with it...the blurring almost gave me epilepsy...

I've played Star Wars:Jedi Academy, SW:KOTOR, Splinter Cell 2, Halo, and assorted other games. no bad blurring.

It's all about brightness and how the eye percieves light. The CRT's far all the weight, throw out nice powerful Bright Color-Soaked Photons for your eye to enjoy from All angles, while even the best Liquid Crystal throws out respectable, perhaps clearer for some LCD photons, but they dont pack the punch of those CRTs, and the viewability changes drastically as the angle changes.

Sadly, CRTs weight a ton. [It's filled with lead.]

For now.
