I do a lot for driving for my job. My territory is NJ down to Freehold-ish, NY up to New Paltz - ish, the city and Long Island. By far the worst journey is to go from Jersey out to Long Island. It's awful, the traffic is atrocious, there's no way to do it withoiut going through the city and God forbid you get caught coming or going in rush hour, it more than doubles your travel time. I do this trip once or twice a week, and quite frankly I've had enough. They need to build some type of structure to get from Jersey to the Island without going through the city. I know it's a long way, but they could do a Bridge/Tunnel type of situation like Chesapeake Bay. This would make life soooo much easier for a lot of people. I guess NYC wouldn't be too happy becase of the loss of toll revenue from the 75 different bridges or tunnels you have to take presently, but fuck that.

I think there were talks a while ago about building a bridge from Westchester (Rye area) to LI. They ended up not going through with it because they said it would create too much traffic problems. I know that wouldn't have helped you much, but who cares ( :) ), it would've been great for me!

Which goes over Staten Island, which last time I checked was one of the 5 Boros, and the Verrazano dumps you off in Brooklyn, also one of the 5 Boros. Not to mention the Belt Parkway, Gowanus and especially the Staten Island Expressway turn into parking lots around 4PM.

This is the route I generally take. I generally never have trouble, though occaisionally I do at certain hours. I think that traffic at 4:00 anywhere is a traffic nightmare though.
There's a great website call The Roads of New York (http://www.nycroads.com/roads/) Which I use all the time for referring to exits on various roads or for planning trips. On the site is an excellent section that covers "unbuilt" roads. It outlines the visions that various people had for releiving the various congestion problems motorists deal with each day and why for whatever reasons the roads were never built.
You can read about the unbuilt (http://www.nycroads.com/roads/unbuilt_LI/) roads here. Many of which I end up scratching my head over wondering why they never did certain things. Of course politics and power I'm sure are at the roots of the reasons these roads were never actually built.

getting over the Verrezano, other than the section around the Bayonne Bridge exit, isn't the problem. its once you get over the Verrezano you run into the monster named the Belt Pkwy. its a fucking zoo. a 20 mile trip shouldn't average 2 hours to travel. i hate that parkway.

My office is in Leonia, right by the GWB, so my usual route to and from the Island is: Going out - GWB to Cross Bronx to Throg's Neck, usually to Northern Blvd and then the Little Neck Pkwy to the LIE to avoid all the endless construction on said LIE.
Coming back - I take the Throg's Neck to the Cross Bronx, down the Bruckner, up the Deegan, get off at the Bronx Terminal Market, go up to Yankee Stadium, over the Macombs Dam Bridge to Broadway, up to 165th and out to Riverside Drive up to the Bridge. I know it seems like a long way but it fucking beats sitting on the Cross Bonx. I'd rather be moving for 30 minutes than sit in traffic for 20. And I used to get on the Harlem River Drive off the Macombs Dam but I got nailed in a commercial vehicle, so I avoid that now.

I do that many times. I don't mind driving so long as I'm moving. More than anything I hate sitting in traffic.
I generally avoid the GWB at all costs because it's always a monster. The Belt in Brooklyn and Queens is horrible when there's delays or traffic problems. Or god forbid an accident on any side of the road. The rubbernecking can be torturous.
One of the things that annoys me more than anything about motorists is when they're driving up a hill. Most people will slow to a crawl and this will back up traffic. You'll sit there wondering what happened and then all of a sudden you get past it and the road opens up. That kind of thing bothers me most. The unnecessary slow that occurs in traffic.

I plead guilty of having to firce myself to remember the Island of Staten is indeed a borough. Some part of my brain thinks its like liberty island or some weird exentsion of new jersey. I have no idea why.
Forget where I read it, but I believe fate stepped in: The Island of Staten was originally intended to be *The Island*, instead of Manhattan. Completely skips my mind, but if things went a bit different, the Big City would be Staten, and one of its smaller island boroughs, Manhattan.
weird.
or totally wrong.

Of course you could always drive up into westchester, into connecticut and take the ferry down to the island but that should add a few hours to your trip.
