Congress is full of millionaires yet the average citizen is not. Congress gives itself pay raises, yet the average citizen cannot do that. The citizen's privacy has eroded yet Congress keeps its own records secret.

In the 435-member House of Representatives, 123 elected officials earned at least one million dollars last year.
In the Senate 1 in 3 people are millionaires.

By comparison, less than one percent of Americans make seven-figure incomes

How are they able to connect and understand what the average citizen needs and wants?

They vote themselves raises covertly hidden in various bill. The fiscal year 2004 Transportation and Treasury Department Appropriations bill included Congress' 2.2 percent pay raise.

Congress during the last 15 years, has given itself pay raises totaling more than $68,000 and catapulted its members into the top 5% of wage earners in America at an annual salary of over $158,000. They passed a law in 1989 that bypass debate and scrutiny and gave themselves automatic raises EVERY YEAR.

On Jan. 1, 2004, they took a raise of $3,400.
On Jan. 1, 2003, they took a raise of $4,700.
On Jan. 1, 2002, they took a raise of $4,900.
On Jan. 1, 2001, they took a raise of $3,800.
On Jan. 1, 2000, they took a raise of $4,600.
On Jan. 1, 1998, they took a raise of $3,100.

That comes to six raises totaling $24,500 since January 1998.

These are supposed to be public servants yet get treated like kings.
They get driven around in limos, have residences the citizens pay for and give themselves raises. This is in addition to their very generous pensions, health and life insurance, housing deduction and assorted perks which they still receive EVEN IN JAIL.

It is time for the people to tell Congress we want and need changes. If you focus on your two Senators - calls, letters, and e-mails maybe it can make a dent in their assurance that they can do whatever they want.

A goverment for the people, by the people? More and more it does not look like it. Yet we just take it. Why?

I've sent letters to congressmen and they send back shit form answers. Summed up in one sentence: Kill Ted Kennedy.

EDIT: By the way, Congress can only give pay raises for the next term. Thus meaning that they're only going to get the pay raise when they're re-elected for their next term.

It's supposed to be the whole government of, by and for the people - do you just have a problem with Congress?
Congress gives itself pay raises, yet the average citizen cannot do that.
Who should determine congressional salaries then? The constitution gave the primary financial decisions to the congress. Although I'm sure there are other reasonable ways to determine their salaries, it's hardly a scandal that the founding fathers set it up that way.

The citizen's privacy has eroded
Privacy isn't mentioned in the constitution, but there are groups that are working for ammendments to add it. Look them up and get involved.

yet Congress keeps its own records secret.

Always been that way.

They vote themselves raises covertly hidden in various bill. The fiscal year 2004 Transportation and Treasury Department Appropriations bill included Congress' 2.2 percent pay raise.
Most legistlation works the same way - introduced as ammendments to other bills rather than freestanding bills. Nothing scandalous about it.

How do these raises compare to the cost of living raises? If it's not higher than the cost of living then what's the problem? Again, not enough information to be scandalous to me.

It is time for the people to tell Congress we want and need changes. If you focus on your two Senators - calls, letters, and e-mails maybe it can make a dent in their assurance that they can do whatever they want.
What would you have me say? Just make a series of glib generalizations? Should I ask them to forgo their salaries altogether? If so, how could anyone other than the wealthy even run for office? They would have to have to have a side job wouldn't they?

I'm not trying to be a dick, (it comes naturally), but while it's easy to just assume the worst about government, it's not that hard to find out how things really work and what the real problems are.

Yet we just take it. Why?

because we ['we' = the collective people who vote/dont vote] vote them in, and once theyre in, we sit back and take it.

we voted them in, and could vote them out, if people actually cared, but they don't.

So, we get the government we deserve.

Congress gives itself pay raises, yet the average citizen cannot do that.

But the average boss or corporation can. Most of the money for Congressional pay raises goes toward personal and professional (read: committee) staff.

The citizen's privacy has eroded yet Congress keeps its own records secret.

Congressional salaries are a matter of public record -- as are all Federal employees'. Roll Call has a yearly issue which lists salaries.
