i'm at friend's house, and his PC has the following problem:

a network connection window pops up and informs him that the following website is trying to access the web/internet ...

he closes the window and a new one pops up with a different name ... the names always seem to change randomly, and reference either a pop culture name or silly pun ...

here's a sampling: scera.mine.ru; eminem.gotdns.org and lacabeza.ath.cx ...

he's running XP on a brand new dell with AOL dial-up 9.0 ... they had a virus a few weeks ago but was taken care of by some techs in his office ...

i ran updated versions of ad-aware, spybot and hijackthis and came up with nothing ... i tried to google some of the keyword, but no luck ...

any ideas, anyone ...

a million thanks in advance

The following is only a guess:

XP has a "system restore" feature built into it. I believe it comes already turned on.

Sometimes it's necessary to turn the feature off and then rerun the antivirus/ad-aware software. Otherwise, certain registry settings are kept and the virus can pop back up.

Also, try running Macafee online virus scan, it picked up 16 items that my Norton's anti-virus didn't even see.

He def. has some type of trojan or somethign that is trying to get outside access. I am not sure if these are legitimate sites or not, but there is something def. wrong.

As Jeff pointed out, turn off system restore, restart the computer, and then you can turn it back on again. I have had this problem happen to me a few times where I got a virus, safely removed it, but it kept showing up on my system as part of my system restore.

I have used

This (housecall.trendmicro.com) to do an online scan before.

My sisters computer had a similar problem. One of the things I had to do first and foremost was to shut down Windows Messenger. Second, as said by the others, turn off System Restore temporarily.

If your friends computer has Norton, McAfee or Trend and it still isn't picking up anything, you might want to give AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php) a try. It's free and works very well.

My computer is infected with the Trojan virus. It says it cant be deleted or cleaned because "the disk is write protected". How do I delete these files? Its totally fucking up my computer. I have too many files for work on my pc so I dont really want to have to restore it. I just want to delete these infected files...

if you're running XP turn off the 'system restore,' run a battery of spyware programs and try running your anti-virus again ...

My google tool bar is not working and I cannot navigate to the google home page. I downloaded and ran the AVG. It found a trojan virus. Of the 18 infected files 4 were "healed" and 14 were moved to a vault. I still cannot access google. Any suggestions.

JJ Thank you. It worked half way, I can now use yahoo (which was also not working) to search but still no google. I spent some time on the phone with a tech from optonline. We pinged google successfully so my computer is able to talk to google but I continue to get the error page when I try to use it. Any ideas? I'm getting google dts.
