I was wondering if anyone else on the board is using firefox. I got tired of using IE and finally switched over yesterday.
So far so good, except that it doesn't like the forward and back buttons on my mouse. And java likes to lag once in a while.

I've been a big supporter of Mozilla for a while now. I switched over to Mozilla well over a year ago and have never looked back.
About 4 months ago I swtiched over to the lighter and quicker Firebird and stuck with it when it became Firefox. Definetly my favorite browser, they've got tons of add on supporter and options, the pop up blocking rules, and ya gotta love tabbed browsing.
<center><img src="http://theknicks23.8k.com/images/HaloSig.jpg"></center>
I've been using firfox for awhile and i think it's the best browser. true that java loads slow but i think its worth it. i haven't had any problems with it and there are absolutely no popups.

I've been using the new firefox for a few days now. I used to test their previous browsers as well. I like it though I've had the same problems with the foward and back buttons and the lag in java. I thought it was just me.
Overall though it's a pretty responsive browser.

I currently use FF 0.9.1, and for email I use Thunderbird 0.7. I uninstalled Internet Explorer and Outlook and freed up a cubic assload of disk space.
The greatest thing about Firefox? A lot of the popup crap that annoys the rest of the internet simply no longer pertains to you. You decide which sites you want popups on, the rest you never ever see.
And the browser is so small you can install it and use it on a USB port memory stick--just plug it in and you go. I am getting tired of lugging my laptop to work, so I am going for the memory stick route--just ordered a SanDisk 256 mb one, for my chat program (Trillian) and browser, so my day-to-day online goofing off is going to be no farther from me than my keychain.

I've used it for a month now. It's OK. The popup thing is nice but it has crashed a couple of times on me. Nowhere near what IE did though.
I just lost all my bookmarks on it today for some reason so that sucks.

Just an update--got my memory stick in the mail, got Firefox installed on it so it's runs off of the stick 100%--also installed my chat program, Trillian, the same way--so I can chat on AIM, MSN, Yahoo, anfd ICQ all at once and not get in trouble at work for installing software. Carrying around a teeny-weeny memory stick is a hell of a lot better than a 5 lb laptop, and everything is running well--and I have more than 3/4 of the stick's memory left over to store whatever I want on it.

Good idea. I have a 256mb memory stick, and while I have administrative control over my PC for now. It may pay to have programs like Firefox and AIM, Yahoo Messenger, Winzip, etc installed to avoid getting in trouble at work for installing applications.

It's a pretty good system i've got going. my IE is infested with spyware or something because everyday my favorites is filled with porn links, so i just stopped using it altogether. Right click your Firefox icon, go to properties, and the first box that is highlighted, past this into it:
"C:Program FilesMozilla Firefoxfirefox.exe" /Prefetch:10
Should make websites load a bit faster.

I use Ad-Watch which is a part of Ad-Aware's suite of software. It blocks pretty much everything. Once in a while I have to turn it off for certain websites that have pop ups, but overall I'm very happy with the job it does of keeping popups from appearing.

Why are so many of you switching to it? Just curious.
What kind of add ons do I need or do the Ronfez.net community recommend?
Has anyone seen any downsides to Firefox?
I'm open to change, just been using IE so long without any major problems.
You'll definitely want Adblock Plus.

Oh my, I could write an entire article on why switch and what extensions to use.
I will begin by saying I started using FF way back when after Netscape (the company that made the browser) was or had crashed. FF had security, had stability, and expandability. Plus, it was not MS but worked in a MS environment. I have stuck with it since and will likely never go back. It has been a month or so since I used IE and that was on a buddy's computer while resolving a problem with his security software.

I use Adblock plus and couldn't be without it. No more popups and 95% of all advertisements disappear, helping most sites load even faster. I also like and use Forecast Fox. While its not a make-or-break add-on, I certainly like the ease of finding frequently updated weather forecasts right there on my browser without having to go to weather.com
Another life-saver Firefox add-on I use is Reminder-Fox. It saved my ass the other day when it was approaching my chick's birthday and I had forgotten. It's just a simple reminder program that puts a short line of text in the toolbar to remind you of events or dates.

i stopped using IE years ago after i got some nasty malware on my pc (yes, i probably visited some questionable sites), but i've been clean ever since.
at any rate, as for firefox add-ons:
- AdBlock Plus (which i disabled for rf.net among other sites)
- Download StatusBar (shows a progress bar on top of the bottom of the browser instead of a pop-up for each thing you download)
- ForcastFox (weather forcast)
- IE Tab (renders pages as if it's IE , in case they don't show up right in firefox)
sailor
04-16-2009, 07:03 PM
flashblock - flash objects don't play until you tell them to. great for youtube threads.
fuzzy time - displays time in status bar
foxmarks - sync bookmarks on multiple computers
I also use Old Location Bar since I hate the new "smart bar" in Firefox 3. And this add-on lets you download youtube videos.

Now that Google has its own browser the next big push is going to be towards Google Chrome, ie they wont be pushing Firefox any more.
Chrome has a very good javascript engine which is much faster that the IE or Firefox engines, it renders pages quicker.. Too bad it doesnt have the addons that Firefox does (yet). Eventually it will.
Though, my fav pick for browsers and security still goes to Opera 9

I've been using IE because when I tired Firefox out a few years ago it wasn't working properly. It just refused to load video right and I got fet up and stuck with IE. I don't feel I have any more crashes, infections and hardware failures than the normal user so it's not a big deal for me.
But I appreciate everyone's suggestions. I'm gonna go back yet again and give it another try. I've only heard good things about it the past year or so.

Well, myspace has always been notoriously slow. However, if she is now noticing a difference, i would venture a wild guess that she either
a) Has torrenets loaded and sharing, taking up her bandwidth ..
b) Has some type trojan or virus, making her PC a part of a bot-net, stealing her bandwidth
or..
c) If she has an unsecured wireless router, maybe she has "visitors" surfing her connection and taking up her bandwidth
Other than that, to ensure its not her PC baggin shit down, download CCLeaner (Crap Cleaner) and run all the tests/cleaners. Then see how it goes.
When in doubt, format c:

b) Has some type trojan or virus, making her PC a part of a bot-net, stealing her bandwidth
or..
c) If she has an unsecured wireless router, maybe she has "visitors" surfing her connection and taking up her bandwidth
Other than that, to ensure its not her PC baggin shit down, download CCLeaner (Crap Cleaner) and run all the tests/cleaners. Then see how it goes.
When in doubt, format c:
:)
She doesn't seem to have trouble with Explorer (other than the fact that it sucks), so I don't think it's something that's effecting the whole comp. She doesn't do torrents, her network is secured, and she uses Avast, so I'm confident she doesn't have any viruses or trojans. She also ran cCleaner.
NoScript is the only add-on I use. Live it learn it love it
Noscript is a must!

Well IE ignores a lot of page requests, firefox doesnt, also some virus's and trojans hide really well and most crap comes in on those stupid toolbars women like to download to their computer. I would get her to check deeper. Super anti-spyware is pretty good to check out.
And DMM, just now trying out firefox? Hell its been the browser of choice for me since late 2005, it loads better for most sites and its only a minor inconvenience for me to open the 3 other websites that wont work with firefox.

The thing about FF that I am not crazy about is when you download a file you get that separate popup box. Is that something that you can turn off? Otherwise FF is great.

Yup you can turn that off go to the settings in the main tab look for downloads and uncheck the show download window when downloading a file.
It looks like this (except I have mine set to popup that seperate window)
http://i39.tinypic.com/2cz7ple.png
I've been using IE because when I tired Firefox out a few years ago it wasn't working properly. It just refused to load video right and I got fet up and stuck with IE. I don't feel I have any more crashes, infections and hardware failures than the normal user so it's not a big deal for me.
But I appreciate everyone's suggestions. I'm gonna go back yet again and give it another try. I've only heard good things about it the past year or so.
I think if you get to know the browser and get familiar with it and throw some of the add ons on it you will end up loving FireFox.

- IE Tab (renders pages as if it's IE , in case they don't show up right in firefox)
Oooh! Does that only fix the display issues or does it resolve compatibility issues as well?
I use several internal and external sites for work but they aren't compatible with FF (loss of functionality, freezing, crashing, wrong versions of Java, etc.) ... would that resolve the compatibility issues?

OK, so a lot of my pages do load faster. I have AdBlock Plus in there, I have NoScript in place and I think I have most of the pages worked out. I'm having 2 problems:
The problem I mentioned above. I have no New Tab button up in the upper left hand corner. I haven't found how to fix that.
Also, I tried to load some videos before and they all don't load. I thought I got all the appropriate plug ins but it won't load certain things.
Video was my sticking point last time with Firefox, can anyone help me out?

Well the new tab button was IE's response to firefox, I dont think there is a button but you can right click on a tab to open a new one, I have my home page set to google and just use the middle button on my mouse to open a new page.
As far as the video, which videos are you talking about, you tube? I have noticed in firefox they will stop after 2 secs and you have to disable, then enable shockwave flash in the add ons under the tools drop down, its probably the most annoying thing.

Yes, just the Java one. It's NoScript. When I allow the whole site it's OK but when I put it back on untrusted it gives me the warning.

Java or javascript? Im not sure what youre trying to do here. What's wrong with making tigerdirect a trusted site?
Also for tabs you can just double click the tab bar

My problem is when I only have the main window open there is no tab buttons or anything. Now that I added the new tab button I have something but there's not tab area with only one window open.
And I made Tigerdirect a trusted site but now a side ad of their pops up because my only choice was to allow the whole site.

Here's something to try with FF.
See that deal in the upper right hand corner that spins when you open pages. (called a throbber Lil trivia ) If you click on it. A Firefox home page will open
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/central/
ad block with no-script are great to have.
most sites have
googlesyndication
http://www.google.com/search?q=+googlesyndication++&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official
and Google Analytics
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Analytics
Along with other stuff that can track you.
But these are blocked.
I don't think a tab will open unless something other than a main page is clicked.
The new no-script is a lil overboard blocks alot more like videos.
If you right click & temp allow it works for the most part.

Mouse gestures are the fastest way to open a new tab.
You hold the right mouse button, move the mouse up, and release the right mouse button. It's a whole lot quicker than having to move the mouse all the way up to the top of the screen, get to the button, and click it, the gesture can be done from anywhere within the Firefox window.
Then to close the tab the gesture is an L, just as fast as opening one.

Ok now this is weird.
I installed Firefox on my laptop and my desktop, typical install, I did it the exact same way on both machines.
On my laptop, even with 1 window open there's a tab in the upper left hand corner. I can double click the area next to the tab and open a new one.
But on my desktop, that isn't there. If I have one window open, the tab bar isn't there, that's why I asked for a new tab button in this thread.
Does anyone know why it installed differently on 2 machines, how I can get it to default to open the tab line even with one window and how I can make my homepage open with each new tab?
Vista on both machines, just in case someone asks.

I'd have to check the security bulletins but I know of nothing currently that would cause this. There was a few months ago a flash (i think) exploit that hit FF. If you play flash based games, etc. this could be the exploit. But, subsequent upgrades should have fixed the problem so it could be that you need to uninstall FF the reinstall the most current version.

You might have the text sized zoomed in. It happens by accident quite easily (Ctrl+Mousewheel).
Firefox saves your zoom preferences on a per-domain basis, so perhaps that's why it's only affecting certain sites.

You might have the text sized zoomed in. It happens by accident quite easily (Ctrl+Mousewheel).

BINGO. That fixed it.

I got an alert on my iMac that there was a new version of Firefox tonight and I got it. version 3.6.3
I have to applaud them for this, but they went and did something really cool. They have now given us the ability to use skins for your window and I spent like an hour just browsing different layouts and color schemes and I am impressed with this.
Its called Persona's, check it out if you get it, and discuss themes etc.

So you get to paste some tacky skin onto Firefox? That's it?

I havent checked any of the tech stuff yet, I guess I was dazzled by the skins.

You being a Mac user and all, I understand that you value eye candy more than functionality.

I rarely think about the functionality because it just seems so well put together and fine that I see no need to improve it.

just use opera instead. years ago i tried firefox and wasn't impressed but in my search for a better browser i found opera (http://www.opera.com/). i've been using for years now. it just gets better and better with every build.

I resisted Firefox for awhile because I tired it once and the just didn't have the plug ins figured out properly.
I use it as my exclusive browser now. Between ABP and NoScript my computer has been a lot better protected, or at least I feel it is. I decide when content starts on my page, not them. It would be an annoyance for the average user but it's invaluable for me.

Usually I keep my window slightly smaller than my desktop, so I can click right on it. The background I have for my desktop would often blend in with the borders of the firefox window, but now that I have the choice of skins, it really makes the window pop out.
