What do you guys think? Pointless action flick or potential sci-fi blockbuster? I can't see how Proyas can fail...he's been solid ever since The Crow...Dark City is still one of my all time favorites...

If they keep the cheezy Will Smith jokes to a minimum it could be cool.. I still remember getting psyched up after seeing trailers for Independence Day and getting PISSED after seeing what was essentially a bad comedy.

Loved The Crow
Really enjoyed Dark City
Still haven't seen Garage Days, but want to
I, Robot took an existing scifi script slotted in parts of Asimov's short stories and then promote it as based on the works of Asimov. I'd really like it to be good, but I don't have high hopes.

I have very mild interest in this one. The only reason I'm at all interested is Proyas, but the trailers and commercials look awful.
If I see it, the only reason will be because the Batman Begins trailer will be attached.

If it's even close to the book; it should rock. And the trailer looks surprisingly good. For those for whom the word 'Asimov' is unfamiliar, or what the big deal about a robot that killed someone:
The Three Laws of Robotics are:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
=
The "Zeroth Law" is extrapolated, and the other Three Laws modified accordingly:
0. A robot may not injure humanity or, through inaction, allow humanity to come to harm.
=

A friend of mine has a theory about this film, and I think that I agree with him: this is the type of film that Arnold Swarzenegger would have done if he was still young enough and not involved in politics.
But he's neither, and so Will Smith gets all of the parts that would go to Arnold.
This movie would interest me somewhat, but for the fact that Will Smith is in it. The fact that he is pretty much kills any motivation I have to watch the film.

It's hard to take WS seriously as an action star. I'd rather see Bruce Willis in this role. That would have been frikkin awesome.

I'd actually be interested in seeing it, though the fact that Wil Smith is in it ruins it for me. I've had enough of him in the savior of the world roles. I think it's mostly because he sucks as an actor and it generally ends up cheapening the film.
For instance, on a weird level I liked Enemy of the State, or rather the idea behind it. Though I think Smith ruined it. I'd rather stick around and watch it on cable.

WIll SMith movies really turn me off, mostly because this is how his lines go:
line one: Said in a way that makes him sound whiter than Colin Powel
line 2: gotta ghetto up the movie
line 3: combo of line 1 and 2
series repeats for the ENTIRE FUCKING MOVIE
and another thing about him is that whatever role he takes, he's gatta "Mack fucking Daddy"-ing it up, best example is either Bad Boys "films"

Got a bootleg this weekend, I actually liked it. I thought it was going to be horrible but it was entertaining.
Don't get me wrong, it was kind of a thoughtless action movie but it looked good, and isn't that the goal?
But you may want to make up your own mind, after all, I like the movie 'Clueless'. :)

I saw it yesterday. It was ok. Could've had less action and more intelligence, but all in all it was a competent effort. I give it a B.

Review : I, Robot
Mr. Summer Box Office..Will Smith...Sci-Fi Action...$$$$$$$$$$! (jesus h christ). Where do I start, you know I'm not going to give it a good review anyway. A little backround on the story, "I, Robot" is based on Isaac Asimov's classic tale of a murder commited by a robot. Once done in the great TV show "The Outer Limits" with a tin-man getting interrogated by a homicide detective. This is a big assed star vehicle extended to 2 hrs of slam bang CGI nonsense with and nothing new at all. Det. Del Spooner (Smith) is sent to U.S. robotics when the head designer (wasted hologram James Cromwell) is found dead and one of his robots named Sonny (well animated from Alan Tudyk's motion and voice) is on the run. The robots have been encoded with 3 laws (the same as Robocop) not to harm humans. Big mystery, and I lost interest.
I found this movie to be just another retread of elements of The Terminator, Robocop, A.I., Minority Report with a sometimes engaging performance by Will Smith (not his usual annoying antics). Bridget Moynahan as a robot programmer is just not a good actress. Director Alex Proyas (cult classic "The Crow") has a good eye for pumped up action and design but this is an exercise in Hollywood by the numbers action and acting (Chi McBride is the gruff police chief..just like Undercover Brother). The script has problems with reasoning the motive and not providing a real villain to hate. The computer generated sequences are way too obvious and the producers decided not to present real robots and do all CGI, so the robots aren't scary.
Kid's might enjoy it but I'm just waiting for something new, not a same-o money bag B-movie. Joins "Riddick" in the DVD cheap bin at the K-Mart.

Umm, no...RoboCop wasn't a robot first of all...second of all he had 3 directives (4 if you count the OCP senior executive protocol) and they had nothing to do with the 3 Laws of Robotics...they were the directives of law enforcement...RoboCop killed many a bad guy...
