View Full Version : Has anyone renewed their NJ License lately?

I need to renew my licence, and under the new ballbuster regulations it needs to be done in person at the DMV. One of the requirements is this:
"Civil birth certificate or certified copy from one of the 50 states, District of Columbia or a US territory. Photocopies or certificates from hospitals or religious entities are not accepted."
My mother has my birth certificate, but I think it's a photocopy from the hospital. I don't want to go to the DMV on my day off only to be turned away because the certificate is not original.
Does anyone here have any experience with this?

i just did it friday, in place of a birth certificate, you can use a passport, and there are a couple other things for a primary, then you just need a license and SS card

Thanks Snoogs, but my problem is that I definitely don't have the other primary documents they are talking about (like a passport, etc.)
Secondary documents, yes, I have the social security card, etc. I could probably obtain the "certified" birth certificate through the bureau of statistics, but it's a hassle - I just want to go tomorrow and be done with it.

i renewed my lic. 2 weeks ago... i lost my birth certificate, so i had to go down to town hall in rahway to get it.. i know u can use a copy of a phone bill or any bill that has your name and address on it... a fishing license may work, but im not sure

let me tell you something. I happy NJ is doing this. one of the biggest problem in perusing document fraud was individuals who gained a valid NJ license through fraud, thus using that id to get them all sorts of documents and credit cards in the fraudulent name.
welcome to the rest of the country, New Jersey.

I still have to switch my NY license to a NJ license. They will not taking anything less than a birth certificate or passport. I even had my current NY license with a ss card, picture work id, etc., and they turned me away. You can get a certified copy of your birth certificate by calling the town hall in the city you were born in. I just had my sister pick mine up and mail it to me (it cost like $5).

I got it done yesterday, no problem. I was worried about the birth certificate because it's basically a copy from the hospital where I was born (and it says "this in not a certified copy"). But it's obviously a prehistoric document, so they accepted it no questions asked.

Just a quick note, it's not called the DMV in NJ anymore. It's the MVC - Motor Vehicle Commission.
And also, did you get one of the snazzy new digital licenses?

i've never had a 'picture license'...
fyi: be sure to sign the back. i got pulled over for speeding and he downgraded it to "license not signed' which it wasn't. I was suprised as shit but glad it wasn't speeding. It still cost over 50 bucks and to think i thanked the guy...

You're gonna have to renew, unless you want to fill out a phony police report. (http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/cit_licenses/d_lic_lostolen.html)

logically, if you are renewing your license then you'll pay the $24 and if you are getting a duplicate then you're gonna pay the $11......you'll be renewing your license not getting a dup
