Agreed.

This mish-mosh of glam style influenced hardcore makes me a bit nauseous. I DID go out and listen to the first one on the whim that I used to be heavily into anything that would come out on Victory and most bands on thatlabel were good. I was wrong with A18 and countless others and I was wrong with Atreyu too. Don't they resemble bleeding Through quite a bit? It's funny how after AFI (and I am not saying they sound like them) get semi-big with the gothcore look and maybe a little bit sound, all of these clones pop up. Blech. May be your cup of tea but leave me nothing to drink.

On the other hand though, the new Unearth is fucking amazing. That is some serious shit.

Atreyu douchebag in Alternative Press magazine:

AP: It's funny how Metallica lost their solos just as all the younger bands started to incorporate them into their music again.

ATREYU: I fucking hate Metallica- flat out, fuck Metallica, fuck Black Sabbath. I don't give a fuck about fucking "roots". Those aren't my roots, so i don't fucking care. Everyone goes, "Gasp!, you don't like Led Zeppelin?" I'm fucking 22 years old! I don't care! green day was more important to me

AP You realize what you're saying is blasphemy to alot of people.

ATREYU: Thats's fine! I'm not here to make friends, and if i was I'd be doing a horrible job. It's just my personal opinion about music, which is a free expression. How can you tell someone they're right or wrong about a band they like? Unless of course you dislike pantera, in which case you're a fucking idiot.

Green Day is about as important as a dingleberry. And they cover a Bon Jovi song????

These lipstick wearing fucks are on OZZFEST this year!!! This will be Crazytown all over again. If they don't get booed off the stage every single day and pelted with bottles I will have lost all faith in my brethren.

It's just sad that these fucks represent Metal to the mainstream now, just like the glam shit in the 80s. I cannot wait until this fad DIES and everyone starts making fun of it. It seems that music fads are coming and going at a much faster rate these days, so there's hope it will be over by '05.

Unless it is 1969 and your name is Jimi.

It also came with a bad ass victory sampler.

I think most of the new Victory is shit and that label and Tony Victory have totally lost their roots. Especially after I heard about how he "lent" some of the Victory bands music to some porno films a while back. Hey, I like porno as much as the next guy (or girl) but to use music from Straight Edge bands who sings against that kind of stuff is kind of crooked to me. I remember a friend of mine telling me and some sex scenes done to Snapcase, By The Grace of God and Strife songs which just seems odd to me. Although I am really curious to see it.

This were some amazing Victory Comps (Sampler):

http://www.artistdirect.com/Images/Sources/AMGCOVERS/music/cover200/dre000/e066/e06616639lr.jpg

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000000IDT.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Man, just looking back it is an absolute sin what has happened to that once great label. Thats why I like Bridge Nine Records a lot now. They have the same kind of integrity and heart that Victory had back in the day. Damn shame Victory, hope you can get some of your credibility back.....

.....or maybe you will just hop onto the next bandwagon once it comes along.

DC Hardcore Good Clean Fun did this song a few years back:

Victory Records Sucks

Back in the day in the '80s when the
old bands would play (old school)
They managed O.K. They did fine
Although they never got paid (that's cool)
50 cent shows, no cars we walked
Both ways through the snow (up hill)
That's how it should go, but you're too busy
Counting your dough (each bill)

If you want to be punk, if you want to be cool
Don't forget the golden rule
Stay underground, you must stay poor
Don't grow up and don't ask for more

You live for the green, dead presidents
Are destroying our scene (money)
You know what I mean, you pay your rent
By selling the dream (for me)
No Individual Retirement Account
Forget you and your 401K (wall street)
I'm gonna stay as poor
As I am today (can't eat)

You can't be punk if you don't care that dollar signs are everywhere
It seems like everyone's on Victory
But I will give away all that's mine, and we won't make another dime
Money changes everything, you see
But I won't let it change me.

Not trying to be harsh here, just trying to help. :)

The problem I have with Victory Records is: Whenever a show is around and one of there bands are on the bill, tickets are about 10-20 bucks more always.

Breakdowns not Bombs Festival: The headliners were "On Broken Wings" "Zao" and "Darkest Hour".
When there was 100x better HC there that day. All the stuff from Deathwish, Throp, and Indecision were crazy.

Does anyone know is Hoods are still on Victory? They were one of the few real good bands on there.

ATREYU=atrocious

Actually 99% of hardcore today is atrocious. Its either androgynous srcEaMO kids wearing thier girlfriends jeans or white suburban wanna-be thugs who mosh likes its a karate match. I cant think of one band that has a singer that has any stage presence and can sing without his voice cracking like a 13 year old boy. Go pick up a Killing Time or Born Against record!

Im 6 years older than that ignorant moron who claimed at 22 yrs old he cant relate to Sabbath and Zepplin. When I was 18 I could tell Green Day was bullsh!t (listen to Operation Ivy little boy) when they came out and Zepplin was the sh!t. Jimmy Page and Tony Iommi wrote the riffs you are stealing today and even Billy Joe Armstrong can admit to that. This further proves the ignorance in the hardcore scene today.

Jimmy Page and Tony Iommi wrote the riffs you are stealing today

Nevermind Page is perhaps the most blatant and notorious musical "thief" in modern music.

He's the Dennis Leary of rock 'n' roll.

And what does Green Day have to do with hardcore? I don't recall them ever even trying to hint they were a HC band at any point in their careers. Yeah, they had a little crossover with Op Ivy because they were friends and were on the same label for a short while, but it's not like either band was trying to sound like the other. I can listen to the Operation Ivy CD or a Green Day album and enjoy them for what they are...completely fucking different types of music.

Whoa........OK we can go on forever about who stole from who (which I agree) but Im commenting on whoever the this guy from Atreyu's qoute. I never said in my qoute that Green day was specifically hardcore nor did the guy from Atreyu.

Yes Green Gay and Op Ivy were freinds but "fucking" different? Yes and no. Op Ivy was before them and better than them. Take away the ska/oi and its from the same bucket of shit. Now go relax and maybe turn down your copy "dookie" Its turning your brain into "dookie" Good riddance and have the time of your life......and stop trying to get all music nerd on me!!!!!!!!!!!

TheMojoPin
07-06-2004, 01:24 PM
Yes and no. Op Ivy was before them and better than them.

Yes, they came first. Are they a better band overall? Hey, I sure think so. But are they a better band in terms of making the same kind of music? Fuck no, because they aren't making the same kind of music. I don't even have to shift into music geek-mode...I can just use my ears. They don't sound the same. Green Day definitely went for a more Ramones-kinda sound, whereas Op Ivy (And by default, Rancid) found their kicks in the Clash.

"Punk" is the weirdest musical label, since it throws together bands that at a very basic level, "sound" somewhat alike, but really end up not being very similar at all. Take the original "big three," the Sex Pistols, the Clash and the Ramones. If you had to, you could link them in that they played faster and more stripped-down guitar music than most other "rock" groups at the time...but take their albums and careers as a whole, they really are three very different sounding bands, but at the end of the day they're all still thrown together as "punk." It's pretty interesting, and pretty fucking odd, when you think about it.

As for Atreyu, yeah, they're pretty fucking horrible, but I actually "get" what the guy is trying to saw with the Green Day quote. The guy clearly isn't making music derived from anything Zeppelin did. He's young enough that his his first taste of "punk" was probably Green Day's faux-punk, and from there he went on to probably find "harder" bands, totally sidestepping ever having to listen to a band like Zeppelin.

As a kid, I heard and loved plenty of classic bands like the Beatles and the Who and the Stones...but I didn't hear bands like Zeppelin or Pink Floyd until I was in high school or college, and by then I had heard SO much else that neither band really did much for me. It was very much a "that's IT?"-kinda feeling. But I was 14 when I first heard Green Day, over a good decade ago...and even though now I don't think they're some kind of great or lasting band, I went on to listen to other actually great bands (Like Op Ivy, which pushed me towards actual HC bands, which pushed me to the DC scene, etc.) BECAUSE of them and their fake "punk"...far more than I'll ever hear because of a band like Zeppelin.

And hey, don't mind me. I just like to write, and I especially like to write about music. Its a dangerous combo when I get the chance to do both.
