Review: Spiderman 2
The continued adventures of Marvel Comics mainstay superhero "Spiderman 2" is more of the same but at least it is expanded and thoughtful in text. Director Sam Raimi stays the course with 4 scriptwriters (final draft by Academy Award winner Alvin Sargent) and a pulse pounding production. Everyone is back, Toby Maguire and Kirsten Dunst (from Point Pleasant NJ) keep the love story alive as well as James Franco giving his heart as best friend Harry Osborne ( he has taken over daddy Norm's business and a big surprise in store for the series). The new villain is Peter Parker's main nemesis Dr. Otto Octavias (Alfred Molina is the best choice for the Doc Ock role) and his octopus mechanical arms take over his brain. Spidey and Doc Ock are true to form from the original comic.
What blew me away was Raimi's vision of the series leaves me wanting more. Who is next for the villain? Lizard (Dr. Connors is on hand as Parkers prof) or Hobgoblin (Harry Osborne) or Man Wolf (J.Jonah Jameson's son)...we will see. The scope of NYC is huge and a wondrous playground where heroes and villains can smash thing up (a lot of cars and taxis fly through the air like toys). The action sequences are superior along with the masterful CGI F/X (in tone with the original). The script has a real heart, and the Parker character is growing. My choice for best film this year is this so far and it will be tough to beat it. Funny scenes are punctuated with real heartfelt drama and the power of love is what makes this a great film (the passion of Raimi and castmembers along with the spirit of New York).
Watch for returning spirits from part 1 (Stan Lee is still dodging bricks) and character actor Joey Diaz gets the best line. Enjoy it from your friendly neighborhood moviegoer...Browntown Johnny.
