TV fines for Janet's flash may be $550K (http://money.cnn.com/2004/06/30/news/newsmakers/janet_jackson.reut/index.htm)
Although this is pocket change for Viacom, the fact that this is still an issue is remarkable to me. Believe it or not, MTV (Viacom), did not know Janet was going to do that.
So MTV won't be producing any more half time shows. Big whoop. No tears cried by MTV.
But fine the individual stations who broadcasted an event and were just as surprised as anyone else? Bullshit. It wasn't their fault.

There are things that MTV doesn't allow to air. With the exception of TRL, every show is taped and edited before airing.
There are plenty of events on episodes of Real World, Jackass, and summer programming that you don't see because it would cause an uproar twice as big as a little ol' titty.
If MTV knew she was going to do that beforehand, they would never of allowed it. This is why they edit their shows. They want the public to like the channel. They want it to be OK with parents to have MTV on in their homes.

There are things that MTV doesn't allow to air.
Music Videos and Quality programming are the top two on that list.
And what about the unedited live awards broadcasts; seems a lot of bombs were dropped at some of those and made it out just fine.

MTV has tapes all its award shows for years now. They are usually taped the weekend before they air.
Videos? Go to MTV2 or FUSE.
Quality programming? History Channel.

MTV sucks. Their programs are horrible and the music they air, when they do air it(which isn't too frequently) is God awful. Fuck MTV.

550K? Didnt Howard get fined 500 grand for saying somethin? Doesnt seem very fair that the moment that may have changed media forever gets a fine thats the same amount as something that was said that no one really paid any attention to on Stern...

Videos? Go to MTV2
Not anymore.
Close to to half, if not more, of their daily programming is now non-video.
It started going towards the dark side once it actually became "MTV2." That only happened after MTV bought out the old "The Box" request-a-video channels across the country. Then it went from being "M2" to "MTV2."
M2 was glorious. No "theme" music shows, no non-video shows....just wall to wall videos all day. You'd see a VJ maybe once for about two seconds every four hours. It was just random videos from ALL genres.
Man, it was great.
And yet again, it's gone.
