My puppy eats her own poo

Where's Ed? He'll love this one...

Anyway, if I don't catch her fast enough she'll eat her own poop. I heard dogs will eat their own poo if they lack vitamins but I feed her Purina Pro Plan dry and Iams wet food, plus I add a vitamin paste when I feed her.

Is she neurotic or just being a stupid puppy?

There are several reasons why your dog may be `recycling', or to use the technical term, indulging in `coprophagia'.
In some cases, it's a form of scavenging.
one of the reasons puppies do this is because they see their mothers eat excreta. It's perfectly normal for a dam to eat the pups' faeces to keep the den clean. It also minimises the den's scent, so intruders are not so easily attracted.

Are you setting a bad example?

Things you can do:
Coprophagia can be a symptom of worms, so make sure your puppy is adequately wormed.
Coprophagia can be a symptom of nutritional problems. Ensure your pet is on balanced diet and that there's something to chew on to keep teeth healthy.

Avoid leaving temptations for your pet: clear away any excreta as soon as possible. Alternatively, sprinkle cayenne pepper or curry powder on the faeces, to make it less appealing to your pet. Taste deterrents are also commercially available.

If you have a cat, make sure your pup can't get at the litter box (your cat will appreciate it too!).

If you catch your pup in the act, say "No!" and then give praise the moment your pet stops eating faeces. Call your pup over to you, so their attention is redirected. Praise your pet for coming when called, and continue to deter them from the faeces.

when my dog was a puppy she used to eat her poo too, my step dad held her mouth open and poured pepto bismol in there. the poo eating stopped after that.

Anyone ever see the TV Funhouse episode where the Dog; who was either Triumphs brother or whatever; kept dreaming about eating poop?

He tried to alleviate his habit by substituting "I Can't Believe It's Not Poop" but that couldn't stop him. His dream sequence has a very reverbed...

My dog used to eat it's own poo. We started putting the flavor enhancer, Accent in the dogs food. It didn't effect the food when he ate it but when it came out the other end it was so bitter the dog didn't want to eat it.
