I heard last night that KORN is putting out a "greatest hits" CD, which of course I assumed would be a three track CD single, but is evidently going to be much more, including two new tracks - both covers.

"Another Brick in the Wall" (I assume "Part Two"), and NIN's "Head like a Hole."

As if to make me feel worse, the hump DJ working at WHFS at 5am this morning when I was listening also pointed out that AFI was covering "Head like a Hole" - FOR A VIDEO GAME!

Shoot me now.

You don't need permission from an artist to cover one of their songs (that artist does still get paid, though), so you can't lay the blame on Reznor.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO

I hate AFI. I DESPISE Korn. I have no respect for a band that used to be good (see Korn, Life is Peachy) and turns into horrible horrible crap.

Hmmmm...you would THINK you knew something or two about cover songs.

so you can't lay the blame on Reznor.

Oh just watch me!

That's right... the "artist" doesn't get royalties. Whomeever owns the publishing does. Everything else mikey said was right.

I wasn't very specific. That's what I meant.

Since I didn't bring this up before, this right to cover without permission is somewhat limited. If I recall correctly, you don't automatically get permission if you deviate significantly from the original in style, etc. in your cover version. Frankly though, I have never seen any instance in which, say, a band has had a problem doing a ska or punk version of a song of a different style.

Then, there's the whole area of parody songs, but I'll stop here.

that song, and that album, hasnt aged well. sooner or later some lame band was gonna cover nin stuff anyway, no matter how devoid of talent they are, or have become.

The difference being that unlike Korn, who were never anything of consequence, A.F.I. is an actually GOOD band, and thus will probably make, at the least, a satisfactory cover.

AFI used to be decent, when they were attempting to be a west coast-version of Minor Threat.

Then they thought nobody would realize they bought a few Misfits album, or picked up a love of cocks in their anuses, and they decided to suck.

I SUPPOSE I should bow to your will, since you're supposed to be the music guru or....something, but I must disagree. Sing the Sorrow was fantastic.

I'll just add that to your list of musical insanities...which I AM keeping for when the revolution comes.

Weren't you praising Fefe Dobson at some point here?

Once you "make it" as a band you should legally be banned from putting out cover songs. It's lame!

I understand bands doing them when they start out and are trying to get known and get a contract.

*this is just my opinion and I don't really think there needs to be legislation made on this matter.

Cover songs operate on a somewhat cyclical basis. For a while they are popular, then almost no one covers, then they are popular again.

They are seldom as good or as popular as the originals. I think it's a kinda cool, in cases like this you get to see an influence that you wouldn't expect.

edit: oh yeah, and Sing the Sorrows? Terrible. I have a copy of Black Sails in the Sunset, that's a pretty good indication of what AFI can be.
