Review: Fahrenheit 9/11
Too bad that the internet has beat Michael Moore to the punch for his ballsy attack on Mr. George W. Bush (he refuses to call him President) in his new "comedy". "Fahrenheit 9/11" is a good movie but if you don't have a computer to hit the anti-Bush blogs or even catch "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" for more up-to-the minute bashing, it's already just a rehash. Moore still does what is his trademark "man on the street with a mike" bit along with a return to Ole' Flint Michigan for a look at the war at home.
Let's start with the Bush bash..some of it is true to form in a Moore film. Brilliant editing to show Dubya as a total tool (his photo-op on the USS Lincoln in a flight suit backed up by Joey Scarbury singing TV theme classic "Believe It Or Not, It's Just Me" is a scream) or a plea for the end to terror before tee-ing of on the links. That's good funny shit, as are the news media and the level of terror is upon us while the entire coast of Oregon is patrolled by a part-time trooper. Otherwise it's just 'smoking gun" stuff about the money war on terror and Bush family ties to the Saudi Arab Kings (maybe some people don't know this?).
I recommend this as what it is, a Moore movie with a little less Moore. He let's it all fly and half hits home and the other half is dull propaganda. The war footage is striking, baby Iraqis dead and soldiers that are from Gung-Ho to bewildered pawns. Marine recruiters hit the mall of Flint to find very "few good men" as if they were selling used cars. Finally a very touching interview with Lila Lipscomb, a Flint mother of a soldier who was pro-war and now is angry after a letter home from her dead son is read. Osama Bin Laden is just an afterthought in the Bush agenda and the Patriot Act is out to get people who bake cookies. Funny references to Jack Webb and Bonanza and Ashcroft crooning away. It's not as good as "Columbine" or detailed as "Roger and Me" but it is a fine enough move for this old Commie, Browntown Johnny!
