Wednesday, I was lifting a tray of mail and putting it into a bin and I did something to my back. At first I thought that I pulled a muscle, no such luck. That night I realized that I may have pinched the sciatic nerve in my back. Any suggestions on what I can do for it?

REST! And take some anti-inflammatants such as Ibuprofin or Naproxen. I suffer from Sciatic problems and believe me...it sucks.

Zathrus,

i have suffered from back pain and pain in my sciatic nerve. the best thing i can tell you is go to the chiropracter WHO PRACTICES the STRAIGHT METHOD not the method where they twist you neck and such

ALSO

you should look for a good MASSAGE THERAPIST

trust me! youll will be in relief quicker

ALSO for temporary relief get ben gay or biofreeze (which i live by) and rub it on the area

For the first few days it is vitally important to stay off your feet as much as possible. The worst thing you can do is get up and down repeatedly as this causes the nerve to become more irritated. Although there does seem to be a debate on whether bed rest makes the symptoms better or not, it is generally agreed upon that bed rest is advisable for the first few days at least.

Although soaking in warm baths soothe and ease the pain, do not use heating pads at first while the nerve is inflamed. Prolonged heat draws the inflammation in, keeping the swelling high. Most doctors tell their patients to apply ice packs directly on the lower back area for about twenty minutes at a time, every couple of hours. Although this can feel like torture, the cold pack helps reduce swelling. Mineral ice is also great at soothing the pain and offering temporary relief.

Some doctors will prescribe muscle relaxers but it is best to avoid them if at all possible because of the side effects associated with these types of prescription drugs. Many medications can be highly addictive, or they can also give you a sense of feeling better that you wind up straining your back worse by overdoing it. Over the counter drugs such as aspirin or ibuprofen will effectively relieve mild to moderate pain.

Chiropractors will give you massage therapy and back adjustments which is a highly effective treatment. You should be able to go home and rest after your appointment so that your spine will have a better opportunity to stay in alignment for longer periods of time. When your back begins to heal there are stretching and/or low impact exercises your doctor will give you so that the muscle wont stiffen too much. But you should only exercise after your doctor approves it.

You may still have just pulled a muscle - the muscle gets inflamed and squeezes on the nerve - so it feels like it's "pinched" but it's really just a pulled muscle. My back gets so bad sometimes that I can't get out of bed. My orthopedist prescribed me 800 mg ibuprofen 2x day for it but it never really seems to help - usually best for me is to sit (usually I can't lie down because it hurts too much) and then use a heated percussion massager that I have that I picked up for about $40 at Costco.

In any medical situation, especially emergency ones, my thing to do is to be the person cradling the person in my arms screaming "Why?!?!? Why?!?!?!"

That really doesnt help.

Usually you feel the pain shoot down your leg with this Sciatic nerve. You feel it mostly in your butt. Time and rest it what it will take. Mine kicked in while I was dancing a few weekends ago. Took it easy for a few days and now I am back to normal. Hope you get better soon Jess.

my dad was diagnosed with a 'pinched nerve' which he's been dealing with for about 4 or 5 days now. he's not one to complain but he says it's painful to his hip. leg, and toes on one side. doctor told him take tylenol and advil and to ice 3x's a day. he says the tylenol and advil do the trick but when they wear off it's painful. they told him it lasts from 6 to 8 weeks...
