This hit me today as it was the topic on the afternoon drive show on WIP. What was the athletic/sporting/fun activity of now and when you were younger?
I see more kids outside here back in my hometown in PA than I did when I was in Jersey. I think the clientel in Jersey was a bit too old and rich and there were ZERO kids around. Or else they were all inside playing video games or wasting time on the computer. Both the downfall of the youth of our society. Save it for a rainy day junior! Get out and play and enjoy the nice weather.
Ok, that was just me being old.
Seriously though, I don't see many kids out there playing games outside. When I was a kid we used to play street hockey (CAR!!!!!!) and two hand touch football which was a blast. We also used to go to the playground and play some little pick up games of basketball or baseball.
Most of the time though, I was by myself. I was kind of fat and the other more athletic kids in town didn't want to play with me. So I just made my own highlights and pretend in the back yard with our huge brick wall. Pitching the lights out (like my childhood hero Tug McGraw) or slapping a shot on the garage door and then trying to save it (like my other hero Pelle Lindbergh). I really thought I was going to have some kind of future in sports but I got into music instead.
I would love to see some kids outside having a pick up game in the street but it just seems like there are too many "indoor" activities anymore.
The one thing that was really big was our after school street hockey leauge where I was ALWAYS put in goal cause the others thought I stank and then when there would be a goal I would catch shit. Go figure. Little Leauge was the best though cause that was something I really enjoyed and did excel at. I had an awesome fastball and a wicked curve. I wish there was some kind of old peoples leauge here so I could play again. Looks like I will just have to settle for softball.

It doesn't seem like the kids in my complex really play so much as they just run around like rabid animals and scream at ungodly hours of the morning.
Unless that's some kinda game im completely unaware of.

In the poorer neighborhoods, I still see kids outside, but I have been alarmed at how inactive so many have obviously become. Theres this guy in my office who is 24 and he cant walk a block without being out of breath and complaining that I walk to fast and shit. Younger kids by me seem non existant, and they must be just sitting there playing X Box or whatever. My parents use to chase us out of the house after we did out homework saying to go play or whatever and I always was active. I use to walk for miles down in the swamps and along the railroad tracks and to my friends house, or ride bikes all the time. I think a lot of parents encourage the kids to stay inside now figuring their kids are "safe" but these games I see them playing where they are roll playing murderers and mayhem makers really disturb me bacause I think it desensitizes them to cruelty and killing. If they just walked out in nature and saw the goodness in the world, theyd be able to retain their innocence longer and enjoy their childhood and theyd be much healthier adults. Look at how many fat kids you see now. To me its really a shame and its going to come back to haunt us.

We played that game all the time. Pick 2 teams, chase each other through backyards throwing little apples and whatnot at each other. Lots of fun.
These days kids are in churches being fondled by crusty priests.

When I was younger, we used to play a bunch of different games. Wiffleball, two-hand touch football, kickball. Sometimes we played basketball, but I never was into it. Then there was the different versions of Tag (Freeze Tag was always the best), and Manhunt as well.
These days there are just a bunch of spanish kids who just play basketball constantly. The neighborhood has changed too much. Nobody goes outside anymore. It sucks.

When I was a yee lad I used to play a ton of street hockey, manhunt, football and kickball.
Now in my complex I only see kids playing soccer and screaming weird shit in the early morn.

The little kids up the block from me are always outside playing. Theres about a dozen of them and they ride their bikes and play ball all day. Its like a gang of 6 and 7 year olds. Its very cute. I never see any older kids around. I always see them in Blockbuster so I guess they all stay inside and play video games.

What are the kids doing in my neighborhood?
Selling weed. I know of 2 guys who sell on my street and 1 on the block next to mine.
The family next door to me play alot of random crap outside seeing as how theres like 6 kids and theyre poor.
I'm 16 and play outside alot more then most kids my age and younger in my town. Mostly football and basketball for me. I dont want my childhood to end, my "generation" seems to be the very last that a decent amount of kids werent completely taken over by Playstations and internets. I wish I could be 7 years old again in the summer staying out all day playing kickball and flag football in the streets having to stop every minute for a car. Kids(I say it like im an adult) dont know what theyre wasting away playing Jak and Daxter and Crash Bandicoot.
Well, thats the closest thing to a rant you guys will ever get from me.

Hanging out at the bar on the corner. Drinking. Smoking. Staying out way too late. Oh wait, that's me.
There are no kids in my neighborhood.
Back home in Philly, the neighbor kid is digging a hole in his back yard. It's huge. I really think he is going for China. Lots of Tonka trucks around too. Little bastard makes me jealous.

> some hang out in parks and on the street. i think in todays day they are looked upon as the 'gotta watch' and 'parents don't care as much'
> some stay outside but only close to the house where parents can keep an eye on them. they ride bikes, skateboards, and play ball or swim in each others pools.
> some play alot of organized sports and are always on the go.
> sometimes they hang out in a friends house or fixed up basement. some parents would rather have all their friends come over so they can keep an eye on things
> they all play on the computer for at least an hour a day 'it seems'. my daughter has close to 200 friends names on her aol. and they all probably watch tv for a couple hours a day...
when i was a kid it was either playing almost any sport in the street or local park or hanging out anywhere and everywhere...

i live in a really small town. you can walk anywhere, so there are a lot of older kids that will just hang out and walk around. there are some parks where a lot of other kids play basketball, baseball, stuff like that.
When I was a kid, my mom always made us go outside and play. But we had fun. We'd play dodgeball, kickball, tag, manhunt...

I live accross the street from a quaint little park in Union. Around 6pm when I pull up to my house there is ALWAYS a shitload of kids in the park. Basketball seems to be the sport of choice, but there's a fair share of whiffle ball being played as well. And a few times a week, there's a girl's softball team that uses the raggedy field at the far end of the park for practice.
Other than that, there's plenty of little demons on motorized scooters riding up & down the street making all the neighborhood dogs go nuts. It's a little slice of Americana...and if it wasn't Union, NJ, it just might be a little slice of heaven.

It's like they're afraid of snakes or something.
Hell, when I was a boy, you couldn't get us out of the woods.

hey crip - which park in union? I grew up in springfield, real close to the union border.
Anyway I recently moved to Madison, NJ. 2 kids around here just got arrested for running up and down main street naked. Apparently they were high on Shrooms and something else. I know this because they happen to be my cousins. Stupid bastards.

Gangsta shit, of course...what else?
that and riding up and down my block on those stupid mini bikes and gopeds, funny I take out my fuel-powered R/C cars(they're small and don't make as muchg noise as the gopeds/minibikes) and run them right infront of my house, noting traffic and not disturbing anyone, and I get hassled by the man, jet these scumbags get away with riding those loud annoying pieces of shit, yet the cops rarely do a damn thing!!

My block, on Valley Stream, sucks because most of the kids play basketball even when it's raining. During the game cars are not allowed to pass through, but the ones that are lucky enough to pass get cursed at and spit on. Mind you, farkers are no older than 13. Guess their nationality.

The kids in my neighborhood are too lazy do shit. They sit inside and play games, evry now and then they'll come out with their Scooters, and Mini-bikes. They don't play stickball, football, basketball or wiffleball like we used to. And they wonder why American kids are all fat little bastards.

Nice, I do the same thing. The day before I race my Serpent for the first time, I needed to test it. I was running in the street in front of my house at 11:30pm. That got the neighbors attention!

yea between the ages of 8-13 i spent much of my time outside skateboarding, playing football, baseball, etc etc over friends houses and everything, then when playstation and computer games got all popular i got suckered into that. The only outside activity i have actively done throughout that period was skateboard, other than that i was playing red alert or need for speed. Then when i got a car i started skating a little more, and going to my friends houses to play video games instead. As of right now, i havent turned on my tv in about 2 months, the last video game i played was at best buy on the sample system a while back, and all my friend and i do usually is go somwhere different to eat every day because thats all there is to do in this town. No wonder america is so fucking fat, why don't they build a god damn recreational center of some sort instead of hounsing developments, food stores, and restaurants. The past three buildings that were built around here have all been food lions, and they are all within 10 miles of eachother. what the fuck

Getting older Im doing less and less stuff outside. A couple years back every weekend we would get huge games of manhunt together. Now mostly anything outside is car involved. It was funny when all the power was out for the weekend during Hurricane Isabell, you would have never imagined that many kids existed and were outside doing things.

Oops, didn't see this for two weeks.
I'm sure the park has a name, but damned if I've been interested enough to ask anyone or look for the sign that I'm sure exists somewhere. But it's two blocks from the "5 Points" at the corner of Vasser & Ellen Streets, just off Chestnut. It's a small park with a basketball court, softball/little league sized ball field and a few little kiddie rides. It's quaint, but the field goes unused far too often, kids these days just aren't playing baseball.
