These days everything is done via email. However is it better to use regular mail to send a thank you letter after a job interview or by email? I was told that if you use regular mail it looks more professional, but Ive heard of people sending a thank you note by email. Suggestions?

I'd do both. Maybe a quick note via email and a formal thank you via snail mail.

I would never have thought to write a thank you card. My girlfriend just got a great job and said she needed to get thank you cards. I never heard of doing this before. I asked if this was just a chick thing but she told me that one of our guy friends who freelances with magazines sends out thank you cards all the time. I can understand an email but an actual card I just dont get. If I ever hired someone I wouldnt expect a card. I think its unnecessary but it seems like its the standard thing to do.

I don't send thank you cards out, though I have sent out thank you letters. It's mostly just a formal way of telling the prospective employer that you appreciate the opportunity for the interview. Plus you're mostly just hoping it impresses them enough to still consider you.

Typically. the Thank You note is used after an interview. Two purposes to sending it. One is simple acknowledgement of your appreciation for the interviewer taking time out of their schedule and giving you a chance to prove your worth (they could very easily have just passed on it). Two (the big reason), is that it's another opportunity to get your name in front of their eyes one more time.

If you do not have a lot of turnaround time before they jump into second round interviews or they make a final decision, then an e-mail will do. However, if you have time, follow it up with a snail mail note/card. They will see your name on the envelope and at your signature line. Plus, the card will probably sit on their desk for a while.

Of course, keep in mind the effort you expend versus the payoff. I never sent thank you notes to the restaurant mgr. that interviewed me for a busboy position while I was in school. But I did send one to the Personnel Officer that interviewed me for a part-time medical clerk position at the VA (while I was still in school).
