Do these buttons at the crosswalks actually effect the traffic light timing, or is it just a dead switch to keep us busy while we are waiting for the light to change?

Most of the ones in manhatten are now dead. They were turned off years ago when the whole grid wentcomputerized. Pressing those buttons would mess up the whole traffic light pattern.

I am not sure, but I think in most suburbs they still work. I know in NYC they are dead.

I know some out on long island work, especially at intersections where there's not a lot of traffic coming from a certain direction.
You'd have to press the button to change the light (or car activated) or else the traffic in the other direction kept going.

I call Bullshit on these buttons. My office is at a 3 way intersection, so I am crossing to and fro to various deli's pizza spot's, etc.

These buttons are dummies!

i think these buttons work like 'what i believe to be' sensors under the street which are located near the light and where you would break for the light...

you can see a diamond shaped cut in the street where you stop for a light. the weight of the car will press the sensor down and start a timer for the light. but i believe the sensors are programmed to just activate the timer during late night/early morning hours

maybe it's the same for these buttons?
