After looking at the Jena Malone thread I saw that she was in Donnie Darko. Everyone I talk to tells me it is so great, I saw half of it at a friends house, and I can't fathom why everyone say's it is such an amazing movie. Is there something I'm not getting with it?

It's all in the soundtrack.

The whole shot around the school while playing Tears For Fears' "Head Over Heels?" Awesome. The rest of the movie can go to Hell.

Well, except for the end.

Motherfuckin'-A.

And it has the advantage over "Darko," since its soundtrack was actually released for sale...in two volumes, no less.

Other great multi-volume soundtracks? The two "Trainspotting" albums and the three(!) "Hackers" soundtracks.

I agree with you, I think I watched about 20-30 minutes of that movie and I had to bail. It was to slow the acting was awful.

As for movie soundtacks go you Times Square is awesome. Bad movie great soundtrack.

I saw DONNIE DARKO the year it came out (Halloween) in the theatre and enjoyed it, but never imagined it would take on a cult life of its own.

Quentin Tarantino aside (his use of music on his soundtrack is incredible), one of my favorite early soundtracks was to a never seen 1980 film called TIMES SQUARE with Tim Curry (before he became the villian in every kids movie) as a radio DJ, and two girls who runaway and live in Times Square back before it became Disney Land North.

Roxy Music, Ramones, The Ruts, Talking Heads, Lou Reed, The Cars, Patti Smith, Gary Numan, The Pretenders and Suzy "Leather Tuscadero" Quatro.

The film was loosely based on his life, and it was a bomb - hey, I kind of liked it! His reaction was pretty severe; it was such a horrible experience for him that he suffered from a stress induced disorder that caused all his hair to fall out.

He didn't make another film until ten years later when he did another semi-autobiographical film, PUMP UP THE VOLUME, this time with Christian Slater as a high school DJ.

That soundtrack had Peter Murphy, Concrete Blonde, The Pixies, Bad Brains, Soundgarden, Sonic Youth, Cowboy Junkies, Descendents, Beastie Boys and more.

Five years after THAT he made the music video disguised as a motion picture, EMPIRE RECORDS, which (while not autobiographical) does sport a soundtrack that includes zillions of songs - everything from AC/DC to Cranberries to Dire Straits to GWAR to Suicidal Tendencies.

The last few years he's been making movies and tv movies in Canada, where he's from.

In case anyone cares, they're re-releasing this. I don't know if this was covered in a thread or not, and I can't seem to find the dates (yahoo says june 2nd-july 23 but imdb says the us re-release is july 23rd). It 's probably just gonna be the deleted scenes from the dvd put back in, but I'd still ike to see it in theaters.

I just want to say that I really liked this movie. I thought it was cool how you had to watch it and try to figure it out. I think the movie had substance, and a delishly creepy feel to it. It makes me mad when people say "Oh, you only like it cause it's obscure and artsy, and it's cool to say you like it." I don't think saying I liked Donnie Darko could really help my case. I thought it was a pretty neat movie.

I loved Donnie Darko, but it's not for everyone. It fucks with the audience in how the narrative jumps around and ends up actually folding back onto itself and disproving it's own existence. It's like a film version of an M.C. Escher painting. Plus that big scary rabbit is bitchin!!!!!!!1

I saw the movie from the beginning to the end.

It BLOWS

I hate when people talk up a stupid movie and act like they are so intelligent because they "get it."

Sometimes movies are just shitty. Isn't that right David Lynch fans?

Lynch has his head up his ass most of the time ("Mullholland Drive" was absolute garbage...literally a TV pilot re-edited as a film), but he manages to pull off a couple decent flicks. "Blue Velvet" is a damn good film, even it makes about zero sense, just for the performances of Hopper and Dean Stockwell alone. And "Wild At Heart" is one of my favorite movies of all time. Might just be Dafoe's best flick...

Forgive me for quoting myself . . .
It makes me mad when people say "Oh, you only like it cause it's obscure and artsy, and it's cool to say you like it." I don't think saying I liked Donnie Darko could really help my case. I thought it was a pretty neat movie.

Can't a person just a like a movie for whatever reason and not have an ulterior motive.

After looking at your post, I guess you're not implying that I only like it because I "get it". But it's along the same lines that drives me nuts. I like what I like cause I like it. Nothing deeper than that.
