WFAN Radio Feud: Mike & The Maddog Vs. Joe Beningo

Has anyone been hearing this the last two nights? The two shows have been firing shots at each other over this whole Marv Albert thing. While I am on Joe Beningo's side as far as the opinion on the issue at hand, I have to say I've lost a lot of respect for all 3 guys... especially Joe. While radio feuds are commonplace on FM radio, particularly FM talk (ie - O&A vs. D&M, O&A vs. Howard, Howard vs. Everybody, etc.), I think it's highly unprofessional for it to take place on a station like WFAN. I thought these guys had a bit more maturity than to go on the air and take shots at each other during their shows over Marv Albert.
For those who haven't heard, Joe B. thinks Marv left the MSG Network for the Nets because Knick-owner Jim Dolan sucks. Mike & Chris think it's because Marv is selfish and wants to steal Ian Eagle's job. I personally think Joe is right on this particular debate, but to start the personal insults between fellow co-workers is just stupid. If it's done for entertainment purposes, as it clearly is with guys like O&A and Howard, it's fun radio. But on WFAN, it's just stupid. C'mon guys.

This is not nearly the first time that Joe B. has taken issue with Mike and Chris. He takes shots at them, their show, and their knowledge all the time. Usually though, they act as if Joe's show doesn't even exist- like they've never heard of the guy.

I always catch the last hour of Joe's show and he is 100x times better than those 2 egomaniacal blowhards. He is the only person I listen to on the fan. I like ESPN radio. Wally and the Keeg 4-7 Mon-Fri, Gordon Damer on Saturdays 8am-10am and the most passionate host in all of NY sports, Brandon Tierney on Sunday mornings, 10-1.

About a year ago, Mike & "The Dawg" tried to start a similar radio war with Michael Kay over at ESPN radio (a guy that doesn't even compete directly with them). The 2 douches came off like the chodes that they are, and Michael Kay (who was always respectful in his criticism of them) has had climbing ratings ever since.
They are the fucking worst. I remember when O and A got pulled off the air, how I tried to listen to the FAN as a replacement at first. They made me want to kill myself. I quickly remembered how listening to them was like chewing on aluminum foil. Thank God I discovered ESPN Radio not long after that.




I got a letter from the army so I think that I'll enlist. I'm not brave or proud of nothing I just want to kill something.

Fuck the FAN. With the exception of Mac and Sid, and Steve Somers, every show on the station sucks. Wally and the Keeg is the best talk show (sports or otherwise) in NY right now.

As far as Mike & Chris are concerned, they've always been a little condescending towards Joe. I remember once last year when they were talking about "regular" callers & asked why Joe didn't call into their show anymore. I thought that was so cocky & uncalled for. I think they even said something like "Just because he's got his own show now doesn't mean he can't call in...especially if he wants to actually be heard."

But, even though I think they're dicks, I still listen. I really get frustrated with the amount of stupid stuff goes on & gets said on Wally & the Keeg, so I can't listen to them for any extended length of time. So until there's another drive time talk show, Mike & Dog are it for me. Unless they're talking basketball, in which case I check 1050 or pop in a CD.

But to get back to your point, yes, radio wars between personalities on non-comedy talk stations are the worst.

I try to listen to Mike and Chris, but with so many damn commercials, I think they talk for a total or 8 minutes per hour (once you subtract the 20 20 sports update). At least 1050, when i turn it on, is usually not in a commerical. They do, however, stick way to much to a format. They never carry things over into another break. They would just end a hot topic, to pick up something stupid at the top of the hour. Also, Mike and Chris know way more about sports than the ESPN guys.

Regardless of the knowledge that Mike & Chris possess, they're borderline impossible to listen to (1/2 step better than Leykis). Who gives a shit that they know what Ernie Eells shot on his 2nd day at Sawgrass in 2002 off the top of their heads if they're talking over each other and their callers to tell you? Each his own on W&K, but they are definitely funnier than any other local show around. I met them when they did a live gig from a bar in my neighborhood a few weeks back. Cool fucking guys, especially Tom Keegan. I ended up hanging out with him for about 4 hours, bullshittin about sports and checking out women. Good time.

Michael Kay is good sometimes but the Met hater in him comes out waaay too much. As a Met fan he can suck it, so I usually turn over to Mac and Sid. Patrick and Rob Dibble can be outright hilarious together, and you're right: they do get awesome guests and ask some real off the wall questions.

I like the fact Rome and Somers are on opposite each other: I don't think you can find two more different sports talk personalities- one is 'the schmoozer, and the other is a complete asshole (I can relate, that's why I like the show. I love it when he calls Jose Mesa, Joe Table)can listen to whatever suits your mood at the time. Oh and so I don't completely derail this thread Michael and the angry puppy suck ass.

I don't get it. You're not the first person I've heard say this, but I just don't see the outright bias. If a team is doing poorly, he beats up on them, if they're doing well he praises them. I don't think it has anything to do with personal allegiance. I just think it's a common misconception that because he works for YES, he's pro-Yankee & anti-Met. Listening to him on a daily basis, I think he calls it as he sees it, regardless of what team he's talking about.

BTW - For the record, I'm a Met Lover, a Yankee Hater, and a Michael Kay fan.

I'm a Yankee fan & a Kay HATER. But honestly, I've never listened to his ESPN show. I heard all I needed to during rain delays & rain-outs when he & Sterling would occasionally take calls. He would talk down to the callers to such an extreme degree it enfuriated me. For that reason, I've never even bothered to listen to him since he stopped doing Yankee Radio. And as mind-numbingly boring as Kaat & Singleton can be at time when they're alone in the Yankee TV booth, I would rather listen to them describe paint drying than a Michael Kay TV broadcast. His schtick during the games is god-awful.

I don't think so at all. I heard him say outright on his show that he's been accused of running a basically all Yankee radio show, and he flatly denied, so I gave him a chance for a few months. Then he goes on to seriously devote 3/4 of his show to the Yanks. I can see devoting alot of time to them- they are better than the Mets (or any other sports team in this town for that matter) but its a little ridiculous. It is possible that so much of his show is All Yanks because he is the Yankee broadcaster, so alot of the callers will be Yankee fans, but cmon...

My last straw with Kay was when the Mets had a nice streak going earlier in the year and pulled to within 2 games. He basically treated it with a extremely condescending 'aww, how cute- the other team is playing well' attitude while playing the song "Even the Losers Get Lucky Sometimes" in the background. Fuck Kay.

The reason you enjoy mac and sid so much is because they are big met fans. They tend to live and die by the mets so fans enjoy that. I used to listen to mac and sid since susan left. If you listen to Kays show, he does bash people or teams when they need to be. He bashes the yankees when they do something stupid. Also too, ABC/Disney own Espn, on many times hes bashed all 3 of those groups. So to say if he bashes the yankees, he'll be fired is unfounded. Just because you listened to the show for a week, doesn't mean that your an expert on how the show goes.

Granted though, when Kay does have guests on, guests who he is friends with, IE Al Leiter, YES Announcers, or his old newspaper writer friends, it does get to be much how he goes on and kisses there ass. Thats the only thing I really don't care for about the show.

This is good radio, although it sound a little fake. Right now Sid is on with Mike and the Dog. Sid is telling Dog right to his face that he greatly dislikes Dog. Mike is coiming back with Jody hates Sid, and would rather have Susan back. Dog is backing down a little, he has appologized, and tried to make up with Sid. Mike asked Sid to say somehting nice about Dog, and he couldn't think of anything. There talking about a fight between Sid and Dog. I hope it happenes, Sid needs a chance to redeem himself after getting wooped by Bernnie. Sid rules!!!

Eric from the Bronx has a distinct voice and he calls just about every night. There's a few other callers I recognize by voice, but I don't remember their names off hand. There's some other dude, who you can just tell is black, sounds kinda like Eric but he speaks slowly and intricately and likes to emphasize the big words. There's also some guy who sounds like he's gay and starts every other sentence with "Yo". Oh, and that guy who is addicted to gambling and calls in with his picks. Then there's the infamous Jerome from Manhattan, but he stopped calling the overnight shows a while ago. I'm not sure what happened to him.
